to missile trajectories, cloistered deep within corporate offices, government agencies and university labs. Their secrets were accessible only via punch card and teletype terminals.

The Vietnam-era counterculture already had made mainframe computers into ominous symbols of a soul-crushing Establishment. Four years before, the student protesters of Berkeley’s Free Speech Movement had pinned signs to their chests that bore a riff on the prim warning that appeared on every IBM punch card: “I am a UC student. Please don’t bend, fold, spindle or mutilate me.”

Earlier in 1968, Stanley Kubrick’s trippy “2001: A Space Odyssey” mined moviegoers’ anxieties about computers run amok with the tale of a malevolent mainframe that seized control of a spaceship from its human astronauts.

Voices rang out on Capitol Hill about the uses and abuses of electronic data-gathering, too. Missouri Senator Ed Long regularly delivered floor speeches he called “Big Brother updates.” North Carolina Senator Sam Ervin declared that mainframe power posed a threat to the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution. “The computer,” Ervin warned darkly, “never forgets.” As the Johnson administration unveiled plans to centralize government data in a single, centralized national database, New Jersey Congressman Cornelius Gallagher declared that it was just another grim step toward scientific thinking taking over modern life, “leaving as an end result a stack of computer cards where once were human beings.”

On a crisp California afternoon in early December 1968, a square-jawed, mild-mannered Stanford researcher named Douglas Engelbart took the stage at San Francisco’s Civic Auditorium and proceeded to blow everyone’s mind about what computers could do. Sitting down at a keyboard, this computer-age Clark Kent calmly showed a rapt audience of computer engineers how the devices they built could be utterly different kinds of machines – ones that were “alive for you all day,” as he put it, immediately responsive to your input, and which didn’t require users to know programming languages in order to operate.

Engelbart typed simple commands. He edited a grocery list. As he worked, he skipped the computer cursor across the screen using a strange wooden box that fit snugly under his palm. With small wheels underneath and a cord dangling from its rear, Engelbart dubbed it a “mouse.”

The 90-minute presentation went down in Silicon Valley history as the “mother of all demos,” for it previewed a world of personal and online computing utterly different from 1968’s status quo. It wasn’t just the technology that was revelatory; it was the notion that a computer could be something a non-specialist individual user could control from their own desk.

Shrinking the Massive Machines

In the America of 1968, computers weren’t at all personal. They were refrigerator-sized behemoths that hummed and blinked, calculating everything from consumer habits

Conversation Starters • What smell brings back great memories?

• How often do you help others? Who do you help?

• What are your strengths?

• Who, besides your parents, had the biggest impact on your life?

• What was the best birthday wish or gift you’ve ever received?

• What’s the best show currently on TV?

A little boy in my infant class came into school and told me he could spell his mum’s name. “M-U-M,” he said proudly. Before I could congratulate him, another little boy said excitedly, “That’s how you spell my mum’s name too!”

My newly retired husband was watching as I went about my daily routine. I vacuumed, cleaned, ironed and sorted the laundry, and after making us both a cup of coffee, I sat down. Hubby looked at me thoughtfully. Was he finally realising he could help, I wondered? My hopes were dashed when he said, “Isn’t it wonderful how you always find ways to keep yourself so busy.

“The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity”

- Dorothy Parker

The zeitgeist of 1968 helps explain why Engelbart’s demo so quickly became a touchstone and inspiration for a new, enduring definition of technological empowerment. Here was a computer that didn’t override human intelligence or stomp out individuality, but instead could, as Engelbart put it, “augment human intellect.”

While Engelbart’s vision of how these tools might be used was rather conventionally corporate – a computer on every office desk and a mouse in every worker’s palm – his overarching notion of an individualized computer environment hit exactly the right note for the anti-Establishment technologists coming of age in 1968, who wanted to make technology personal and information free.

Over the next decade, technologists from this new generation would turn what Engelbart called his “wild dream” into a mass-market reality – and profoundly transform Americans’ relationship to computer technology.

Hello Everyone,Wow, can’t believe another month has past. The year is flying by, and we had a

jammed packed September. As you know from our last edition we were raising money for Farmers in the drought and rural community. Staff, residents and families raised a whopping $400. This was an amazing effort. Vacenti corporate management has generously matched our donation, therefore raising the bar to $800. Thank you to each and all.Esida and Esida Lodge really embraced “R U OK?” Day. This day is a national day of action in September dedicated to reminding people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, "R U OK?", in a meaningful way, because connecting regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to make a difference to anyone who might be struggling. The homes was a sea of yellow with sunflowers, posters, lemons, even the food was yellow – jelly and cupcakes iced by our residents.Happy Father’s Day, to all those Dad’s, Grandad’s and Great Grandad’s. We hope you were spoilt rotten and had a wonderful day. And we also take time to remember those Dad’s that are celebrating in heaven. At Esida and Esida Lodge we really embrace the community, families, friends and welcome them with open arms. We are always looking for volunteers, to join us to assist in enriching residents lives every day. If you have hidden talents, or just want to have a coffee with someone that may not have family, please see myself of Lisa.We often have staff from our corporate office come and visit us onsite. I would like to thank these staff members who helped get involved in one of sing-a-longs and did “the hokey pokey”Wishing you all a wonderful month. Till next time, take care.Jenelle McPherson

Hi from the Lifestyle team,I have residents reminding me it’s not long till Christmas. Yep it’s definitely

coming closer now that we are into the October Issue.A massive thankyou to Jade (casual Lifestyle Assistant) and Nikki (Nursing Assistant) for filling in for Annette in the coffee shop while she was on annual leave for a week. Once again we had the opportunity to take a group of residents to the Queensland Art Gallery for the Art Session and tour, over the past 3 months. They have enjoyed viewing 6 different art pieces and have a go at making art themselves with a qualified Art Therapist. We look forward to taking a new group of residents for the next 3 months, who are sure to also enjoy the experience. We enjoyed some dress up days at Esida / Esida Lodge this month getting behind R U OK Day and wearing yellow to promote awareness for asking that all, important question R U OK?This month we welcomed a new entertainer Ray Thompson into our home singing some old country songs while strumming his guitar. We had our regular entertainers and performers in September which was enjoyed by all residents that attended. We have started some new leisure activities at Esida and Esida Lodge which I’m hoping the residents will find fun. One new activity is turning old reading books into the new craze called “Book Folding.” We hope to share some of our master piece photographs in the upcoming newsletters. Yilmaz and his men’s workshop members have completed the finishing touches on the coffee table. It definitely is a one in a million master piece. The men’s workshop have accomplished an amazing job, working together as a team to achieve the finished project. Just a reminder, the hairdressing salon in Esida Lodge basement is open every Tuesday with hairdresser Sarah. If you wish to make an appointment, please let the Esida/Esida Lodge staff know and we can add your name to the hair appointment list. Until next month, Take care and stay well, we’ll see you at your next activity.Lisa with Rae, Annette and YilmazLifestyle Coordinator

Hello everyone,What a fantastic and eventful month September has been. Firstly, I would like

to extend my thanks and appreciation for the support Lorocco receives from diverse community groups and organisations, especially not-for-profit groups that contribute to our lifestyle activities.Kindness is priceless, we were delighted by the wonderful gift baskets laden with presents for Father’s Day from Good Start Kindergarten Carindale, and bespoke crochet and knitted blankets from Dorcas. Our Fathers and families celebrated Fathers Day with an amazing sausage sizzle, that included a few refreshing ales. Each Dad was gifted a personal rug and an appreciation award. Our Dads are simply the best. This September we also held events that highlighted the importance of health and well being. Firstly, our Jean Hail’s ‘Think Pink High Morning Tea’, which focused on women’s health and positive ageing learning about creating healthy patterns and positive change which is vital to our lifestyle. As a community across all our sites we celebrated the national ‘R U OK Day’ on the 13th of September. It was a moving and powerful day. It was fantastic to see how we can all connect when we focus and listen in a genuine meaningful way. It’s something we can all do to make a difference not just on ‘R U OK Day’ but everyday. Now that Spring has arrived, our daily exercises are taken outdoors most days. We continue to vary our range of classes to promote variety and maximise fun and fitness to all residents. Next month we are going to introduce seated Zumba. We will be enjoying a fiesta at Lorocco, starting the 4th October, with a BBQ, concert and Happy Hour on World Taco Day, complete with a Piñata. OLE AMIGOS! Please mark this date on your calendar.Next month we will highlight safety at home and at work with HI VIS day. Bright daywear will be an essential for everyone. With the release of Christopher Robin, we have decided to have another Teddy Bear Picnic. Our staff have been asked to bring their Teddy Bears to work and our residents will have a competition to guess and match the Bear to their owner.Jill Campbell,Lifestyle Coordinator

Hello from Marebello,

At Marebello we are experiencing some exciting change with all the new

renovations, additional living space for our residents in Wisteria and revamped communal sitting areas. We have had lots of positive feedback so far.

Currently, we are in the early stages of implementing a new Calls Bell System to enhance our current system and also better support the health and safety of our residents. This project will take approximately 6-8 weeks to finalise. We expect the disruption to residents will be minimal, however if you have any queries regarding our new upgrade please don’t hesitate to ask.

Our lifestyle team continue to engage residents in new and exciting activities. With a lot more planned for the rest of the year.

Katie FairmanFacility Manager

Hello everyone,

What a busy month we’ve had! We started off with some spring planting during Garden Club, and a colourful performance from our Butterfly Ladies with their ukuleles. Music continued with an energetic show from Caroline & Lou, with one of our residents being serenaded, much to her delight. We called on Lachlan to draw our raffle, with 3 very happy residents taking out the prizes. Congratulations to Joy, Lucy and Dot and thank you to all who supported our Fathers Day Raffle.

During art and craft, we got into some mask making to celebrate Brazilian Day, which residents then wore at Happy Hour, and also some painting using props other than brushes which created lovely art pieces. We farewelled one of our long serving volunteers, Valda, with a thank you gift.

A group travelled to Nandeebie, to take part in Tournament of the Minds, with our residents doing very well, having lots of fun along the way. The weather was perfect for those who enjoyed a picnic morning tea at Thompsons Beach, with many commenting that “the serenity was beautiful”. Wisteria enjoyed some biscuit decorating, golf putting, a special high tea, and our wonderful music therapist, Anita. The animal farm visited us, with many getting to have a cuddle with the newly born kid goats. It was wonderful to see so many out in the sunshine.

Come along to our Marebello Review Concert on Wednesday 31st October, where residents and staff will showcase their talents. Date Claimer for December 7th - Lifestyle are planning a Christmas Ball from 3.30pm, more info to come!

So, until next time, stay happy & keep active.

FROM THE MANAGERHello Casa family & friends,Thank you all for welcoming me into the Casa fold. Jason is cruising the high seas for two weeks, set to return mid October, and in his absence Mel the Clinical Manager or I are available for any enquiries. Summer is heading our way, which can mean new clothing for the residents at Casa. In order for clothing to be labelled, please ensure that all extended family or friends who may provide clothing drop it in at Shebby at Administration or give to the registered staff after business hours. As you know there have been some staff holidays of late – Shebby has returned looking rather refreshed and has kindly provided a little précis regarding her time away;“After 11years, I finally made it back to Turkey. I spent most of my time in Bilecik, where my father lives and also saw the majority of my family in Istanbul. Bilecik is a town between Istanbul and Ankara and this was my second time visiting there. Istanbul is a massive city, with lots to do and see, such as Mosques, Museums and the Grand Bazaar. I went sightseeing a few times but I really just wanted to spend time with my cousins' children who I hadn’t met before. Coming from a large family, it was great to spend time with them.”As you may have noticed many of the feature walls are being re-painted throughout the home, this has freshened up the interior significantly.Thank you for your time, Jason will be back next month with tales of his travels.Laura DuffyManager - Operations

Hello,September arrived with several celebrations including Father’s Day and

many resident birthdays. We also had two visits from Portia the Vacenti dog this month, giving residents the chance to have plenty of puppy hugs. The month started with a Father’s Day concert and one of our very talented residents took this opportunity to jump up and help sing a few old favourites. Additionally, on Sunday the 2nd, residents were able to come together with friends and family for an afternoon tea. We also went out to the Dendy Cinema and watched an Australian movie called The Flip Side, and enjoyed a lunch at the Carina Leagues Club, where some residents had a flutter and played the pokies.Residents had a trip to both Bunnings and Spotlight, with a morning tea at the local café. The residents where shocked that Bunnings Hardware is an all purpose store and they stated it was so different from the hardware stores they had shopped in.On a beautiful sunny day we went to Brisbane City Hall for a concert by Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra and enjoyed a morning tea at a cafe in King George Square at one of the cafes. We also hummed along to Cabaret performer Michael Griffiths, as he sung timeless songs of Cole Porter, including ‘You’re the Top’, ‘I’ve got you under My Skin’ and ‘Night and Day’. It was wonderful to see the residents singing and dancing along to the music! The Zonta ladies visited this month, with a pamper session on the first Saturday of the month, and on the third Sunday they assisted the residents in making breast pillows for women suffering breast cancer. Once the Zonta ladies have ironed and sewed the outside of the pillows, our residents will help fill them and then the Zonta ladies will finish putting the pillows together. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the residents gathered and enjoyed some flower arranging and made little posies to put in their rooms and the lounge areas, for all to enjoy. I look forward to seeing you at Casa, and when visiting please feel free to come along and join in with the activities, functions and outings.Marieann EdgellLifestyle Coordinator

Hello All,

I am back, feeling refreshed after having three & a half weeks off on leave. The first

full week off, I was on an 8 day bike ride from Mosman to Cairns via the Atherton Tableland. We were supposed to start at Cape Tribulation, however the local Police decided that it was too dangerous for 500 bike riders to ride the road out of the Cape, so we had to commence from Mossman.

We camped at Mossman on the Saturday night after flying to Cairns and then rode to Daintree Village on the Sunday, a ride of about 60kms. We then went to Port Douglas, Mount Molloy, Atherton, Milla Milla, Gordonvale & finished at Cairns on the Sunday, totalling about 480 kms. Once we had made it to the top of the Atherton Tableland, we had a 16 km downhill ride, which was spectacular. We then had a rest day in Atherton, to explore the village of Yungaburra, where I saw two platypus in the local creek and visited the War Memorial for the Afghanistan War.

In other news we have started a new Care Coordinator, Linda Hull, who comes to us with 20 plus years of experience in Ireland and Australia. Linda will work primarily on Level 2 and 3, so please stop by and say hello to Linda when you see her.

Until next month.

Ciao,

Ian ByronFacility Manager

Hi Everyone,

The weeks are passing so quickly. The first month of Spring is over and the

residents are enjoying their walks in the beautiful weather.

One of the residents’ favourite guests is Anita the Music Therapist. Anita sings, plays guitar and encourages the residents to engage in fun musical activities. They love to join in and sign along with her beautiful voice. We will say goodbye to Anita this month as she is taking time off to have her baby. We wish her all the best and hope she will join us in the New Year to entertain everyone.

Thank you to Brooke for running the R U Ok morning tea and suppling information to the residents. They were very happy to learn about the day and how it helps the community. It opened up their minds on how to help other people.

We had a farewell for two very important staff members, Paula and Lisi this month. They will both be missed by staff and residents at Portofino. We wish them all the best in their new adventures.

We also had a special visit from Ascot School of Dance. The dancers brought so much joy and happiness to the residents as they preformed their dance routines. The residents absolutely loved the costumes and the talent these young girls displayed during their performance. Thank you to Ascot School of Dance.

We look forward to another exciting month at Lifestyle Portofino.

New standards under the Single Aged Care Quality Framework passed by Parliament

The Aged Care (Single Quality Framework) Reform Bill 2018, which establishes the new quality standards, was passed by parliament on Monday 10 September 2018. The new standards represent the Federal Government’s commitment to reforming and driving continuous improvements. This is the first upgrade to the aged care quality standards in twenty years. The new standards represent the aged care reforms including quality and safety information for residents. Vacenti homes will be assessed against the new standards from 1 July 2019. We will utilise the intervening period between now and 1 July 2019 to understand, implement and embrace the new standards into our service model.

Resident and Relative Satisfaction SurveyThank you for completing the Resident and Relative Satisfaction Survey. Your feedback is truly appreciated and this information will be treated confidentially. We are currently in the process of collating your responses and feedback, looking for trends at each home, identifying our strengths and opportunities for improvement including future initiatives. A summary of findings from the Survey will be provided to the management of the home to allow for review and actioning. We appreciate your time and comments.

National Safety Month - “A moment is all it takes”.The theme for this October’s National Safe Work Month is “A moment is all it takes”. While a safety incident can happen in a moment and in any workplace, a moment’s forethought can prevent harm. This year, we are asking staff to commit to taking a safety moment every day in the workplace. We will be raising awareness of hazards and risks in the workplace and how to prevent harm; mental health awareness; health and wellbeing.

Mavis took one end and I the other and together we carefully manoeuvred the old brass bed through the bedroom door and the open verandah doors.

We lifted it over the balustrade into the hands of family waiting below.

Carrying it over the lavender, under the low Albizia branches, then past the roses, they gently put it down in the middle of the freshly mown lawn.

Chantelle carried out the cotton sheets, the embroidered pillows, and finally the multi-coloured blanket her great-grandmother had knitted for me.
