Pastor’s Corner

Dear Friends, This weekend, we celebrate the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In today’s Gospel, Jesus and the religious leaders in Jerusalem continue an intense exchange of both questions and challenges. At this point, the disciples of the Pharisees, together with the Herodians, try to entrap Jesus with a question involving the payment of taxes. The Herodians and the Pharisees approach Jesus, asking that he “take sides” in their dispute. If Jesus answers with the Pharisees, he shows himself to be an enemy of Rome. If he answers with the Herodians, he offends popular Jewish religious sensibilities. From his first words to them, Jesus shows that he is very much aware of what they are trying to do. He then asks to see a Roman coin, which is readily provided to him. Immediately, he then asks that his questioners examine the coin. Agreeing that it is Caesar’s image on the coin, Jesus tells them that it must belong to Caesar. Avoiding the question of lawfulness altogether, Jesus answers their question with simple logic. Then, going further still, Jesus tells them that their obligation is to simply pay to Caesar that which belongs to Caesar and likewise give to God that which belongs to God. Jesus’ response to the Herodians and Pharisees suggests an ethic that we as Christians ought to adopt in our lives. It reminds us of the importance of keeping things in their proper perspective. Do we attach ourselves to worldly things at the expense of the love and honor that we owe to God? Many activities and events surround this weekend in the middle of October. First, we honor and congratulate our First Communicants who received our Lord in the Eucharist yesterday morning (Saturday, October 17th) at a special 10 AM Mass. I ask you to pray for all of our young children that the joy they experience on this their special day will only grow stronger in their hearts through the years. Second, this weekend concludes our annual Baby Bottle Drive for Mother’s Home in Darby, PA. This annual drive has been conducted at this time of year because the month of October is traditionally dedicated as Respect Life month. We have also involved all of our young children at Assumption Academy in this drive to increase awareness in their hearts of the need to make sacrifices in Christ’s name to help others in need. We thank then everyone for their participation in this important annual drive and I look forward to sharing with you soon the results of this drive that helps so many. Third, this Sunday begins our annual celebration of Forty Hours Devotion after the 10 AM Mass and will continue through Tuesday evening. Each night, we will gather for sung Evening Prayer with Benediction in the church. Sign-up sheets for adorers have been posted on the bulletin board for the past few weeks and I am grateful for those who have signed up thus far. There are still a few more time slots that need to be filled. I encourage you to check these times and sign up as needed. It is my hope that many of you will come over these privileged days to spend time with our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Finally, this Sunday will mark our annual celebration of World Mission Sunday within this special Extraordinary Missionary Month. We are reminded that we are called through our baptism to be part of the Church’s missionary efforts, through prayer, self-sacrifice and support of missionary vocations through material aid. Remembering that we are baptized and sent as a Universal Church of Christ on mission in the world, we can pray for the Church’s worldwide missionary work as well as offer financial help to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith who provide charity to vulnerable communities throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands. Once again, I take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued spiritual & financial support during these difficult times. Your sacrifices to keep our parish healthy and strong is greatly appreciated. May God continue to bless you and your families and our wonderful parish of OLA. Have a great week! Love and prayers, Fr. Carey
