Liana Lang retired as principal of Manasquan Elementary School and served six years as guidance director at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lau-derdale, Fla. She continued as a guidance counselor at Pope John Paul Jr. High School in Boca Raton, Fla., and completed her career in education as a guidance counselor at St. Ann Catholic School in Naples.

Man’s best friend is a term with no dis-crimination. Whether your dog is large or petite, obedient or a little rebellious, you love them just the same. The unpar-alleled companionship between a human and their deaf dog is no exception.

It is a popular yet wildly misguided rumor that deaf dogs are unable to be a loving member of your family. Impos-sible to train, aggressive and unruly, and incapable of living a normal life are all stereotypes falsely attributed to deaf dogs. “Adopting any dog means that you are committing your family to providing a loving forever home,” said Dr. David Nelson, clinical associate professor and director of emergency services at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medi-cine & Biomedical Sciences. “The handi-cap is not the determinant of suitability, but rather the training and assimilation that you are going to undertake.”

The biggest difference between a hear-ing dog and a deaf one is that you can’t use your voice to get the dog’s attention. Training a deaf dog is not necessarily harder than a hearing dog; it just requires a different approach. “One key point in their training is that if they are not look-ing at you, they can’t receive feedback and they don’t know you have informa-tion to provide,” said Nelson. “They have to learn sign language and body posture which needs to be consistently delivered, and, just like any other dog, you must not let them get away with bad behavior.”

Another training technique helpful for communicating with your deaf pooch is to train them to respond to a vibrating col-lar. A push of the radio transmitter causes a vibration in the collar, and you can then condition your dog that this is a fantastic opportunity for a reward. After multiple positive rewards, their attention should turn towards you immediately after sig-naling, so you can then provide further instruction. Keep in mind that the vibra-tion from the collar should never have a

negative connotation, or your dog will be afraid to respond in the future. Having them come to you without hesitation is extremely important, so always be sure to provide positive feedback.

“We hike in the national forests with him off leash and he actually is easier to manage than the other dog who can hear just fine,” said Nelson about his own deaf dog. “We always have the safety net of the vibrating collar but rarely use it, and he has learned to check back visually and will come to a hand sign without delay.”

Another common misconception of deaf dogs is that they are aggressive. This makes many people question whether it is safe to have a deaf dog in their home around children. “It is not deafness which determines suitability of a dog to be with children, but the personality of the dog, the child, and the home environ-ment,” said Nelson. “Deafness does not mean that the dog is bad for this or that; the dog’s personality and the owners’ training determine those results.”

Deaf dogs can be startled when touched unexpectedly, so establishing a “com-munication spot” that you touch when you need to wake them up is a good idea. “We have trained him that the top back of his head is the communication spot, and when we touch it and he is sleeping he im-mediately begins wagging his tail because he knows it is one of us,” said Nelson.

Certain breeds of dogs, such as Dal-matians, carry a gene that causes deaf-ness. If the deafness isn’t genetic, it is still common for a dog to lose hearing from an ear injury or simply from old age, just like people.

Despite the few adaptations you must make for training and living with a deaf dog, the love and appreciation you re-ceive far outweighs any perceived adver-sity from their disabilities. The friend-ship between a human and their dog, hearing or not, knows no boundaries.

He might have been standing on the opposite sideline and on the opposite side of the ball but, football-wise, things have come full circle for former NFL All-Pro Edgerrin James.

James began his illustrious football career as a kid playing Pop Warner for the Immokalee Braves at Gary Bates Stadium. It’s the same field he would later star for Immokalee High School.

After 11 years in the NFL, mostly with the Indianapolis Colts, a Super Bowl and four Pro Bowls, James found himself on Saturday taking the gridiron once again at Gary Bates Stadium.

Though James is the Miami Hurricanes all-time sec-ond leading rusher, it is with a new set of Hurricanes he finds himself involved with — the Naples Hurricanes’ Mighty Mite team.

James is their coach. His son, Edgerrin Jr., is the team’s quarterback.

James wanted the players to focus on today. But with everything around him, helplessly, James was caught up in yesterday.

“Played right here,” said James, 35, who rushed for 12,246 yards and 80 scores in his NFL days. “The Im-mokalee Braves. Same field. Same everything.”

Well, not everything was the same. The Braves have become the Seminoles, whom the Hurricanes played.

And instead of James standing on the Immokalee side-line, he was standing on the opposing one.

“First time ever I went against anything Immokalee,” he said. “Wasn’t conflicted. I know all the kids. It’s youth football. It was actually really fun. My son never got the chance to see me play high school football, so he had a lot of questions. That was pretty cool.”

James is finding coaching a team of 8-year-olds to be pretty cool indeed. With their 31-6 victory on Saturday, the Hurricanes have improved to 7-1. He’s having a ball watching the kids run double-reverses or even some-times a no-huddle offense.

“Edgerrin is one of the most devoted coaches we’ve ever had,” said Hurricanes athletic director Rich Koert. “He is completely devoted to the kids and our program. To see a great player like him do what he is doing sets an example for all youth coaches.”

Youth football has changed dramatically since James’ playing days with the Braves. There are more leagues, more teams and more intensity. Youth players’ stats and combine times are now entered into national databases by scouting services and sold to high school and college programs.

For some, youth football has become a money- making venture.

James sees another downside.

“Now, it’s just so many different leagues,” he said. “You don’t get the best of the best because all the talent is scattered about. When we played, you had to make the team.”

From the pros to Pop Warner, another issue that runs throughout all levels of football is safety. Many parents are concerned about allowing their children to play a collision sport at such a young age.

James allays those fears.“Once (parents) get informed and see what it takes,

and if their kids are coached the right way, they’ll let their kids play, “ he said. “You just have to make sure the coaches are doing their part.

“Sometimes adults are putting their personal feelings in and that can hurt the kids. As along as things are done the right way, it’s not a problem. When kids are taught the wrong way, that’s where there is a problem and that starts at youth football.”

Regardless of the issues and concerns youth football fac-es, Saturday reminded James what the game is truly about.

“My son is giving me a chance to relive it,” James said. “You don’t realize youth football is the funnest time in your life until you play at the highest levels.

“I went to the highest levels of the game. I played in a Super Bowl. But, hands down, youth football is way bet-ter than that. That’s what I want these kids to find out.”

The Barron Collier and Lely high school volleyball teams battled in their annual “Think Pink” match on Tuesday night at Lely High School. The players on both teams wore pink uniforms to raise awareness for breast cancer.

The Cougars bested the Trojans in three straight sets (25-18, 25-8, 25-17). Barron Collier improved to 13-4 on the season. Lely is now 13-9. The fans also wore pink proudly. Some even painted their bodies for the good cause.

Several of the local volleyball teams wore pink this week to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

BACKWATER: Prime conditions. Docile winds thru to late next week plus little rain make for clear water. Tides off new moon; strong morning flood; weaker afternoon outgoing. Water temps stable circa eighty degrees. Snook tide early. Work Hurricane/Caxambas pass beaches with pilchards or pinfish under shower. Slots here. Redfish also a top target. Select incoming mid tide ICW edges and work with shrimp under popper; later far reach shallow edges with shrimp. Trout over grass patches Johnson and Rookery early incoming with shrimp. Snapper; all water-way edges moderate tide with shrimp to bottom both tides.

NEARSHORE: Clean water Passes for pompano; some mackerel. Time your action incoming clean with shrimp moved slowly tight to bottom. First reefs hold bait drawing mackerel/bluefish et al; work with tipped jigs under chum. Bottom showing snapper; some surprising size sheepshead on shrimp. Pelagic run south drawing cobia inshore; live bait freelined full time in chum slick.

OFFSHORE: Gag grouper moving closer inshore. Now harvest size reds and gags in 50’ hard bottom with live bait/cut ladyfish. Deep wrecks holding migrating cobia, kings and some permit. Crabs for permit; live bait others; all under serious chum.

The Naples Players opened their 2013-3014 season with “The Great American Trailer Park Musical.” The perfor-mances and production values are up to TNP’s high standards, but still cannot overcome the taw-dry material.

Don’t go expecting subtlety: the title says it all. The action takes place in and around Armadillo Acres, a trailer park in Stark, Fla. The char-acters are stereotypes of trailer trash, with problems out of Jerry Springer. One woman has a husband on death row, one is given to hysterical pregnancies. An-other resident has suffered from ago-raphobia since her son was kidnapped. Her unhappy husband has an affair with a stripper. Set out this way, these situa-tions sound grim, but they are all played for laughs.

There is a small cast, including three women who function as a Greek chorus. Then there is the agoraphobic Jeanine, her toll-collector husband Norbert, the stripper Pippi and her redneck boyfriend Duke. All the actors do very well, and work hard. The Greek chorus ladies — Lisa Federico, Debi Guthery and Alyssa Lee — are onstage almost throughout, singing and dancing nonstop, executing Dawn Labrecht Fornara’s appropriate choreography. Of the other perform-ers, Laura Needles is waiflike and even touching as Jeanine. Her ultimately suc-cessful struggle to overcome her fears is the closest the evening comes to a recog-nizably human moment.

The set design by Jason Sherwood is witty and flexible. The costumes as always are excellent. The orchestra is very good and the voices are almost all strong. There are a large number of well-performed musical numbers which, while not memorable, keep the action moving along.

The show includes, as the TV warn-ings would say, crude language and sexual references — lots of both. There

is nothing necessar-ily wrong with that, but here one feels that these elements are intended to be hilarious in and of themselves. Like an ac-tor dropping his pants when the audience is not responding to his shtick, the show goes for cheap laughs. There is no sym-pathy in the portrayal of the characters.

Compare this show to, say, “Book of Mormon,” which much more knowl-

edgeably pokes fun at a certain group while still conveying a degree of affec-tion, even respect. “Li’l Abner” mocks country people, but it has a satirical bite and the residents of Dogpatch turn out to be smarter than the so-called sophis-ticates.

“The Great American Trailer Trash Musical” is an exercise in snobbery. The problems of this class of folk are not to be taken seriously. There is even one gag that comes close to, if not over, the line between funny and racist.

And then, who is it at TNP who is so convinced that an explicitly obscene bump and grind performed by middle-aged women is necessarily the funniest thing in the world? These actions are part of the script here — they are not entirely gratuitous the way they were in “I Do, I Do” a couple of seasons back — but still: enough, already.

I know, I know, not everything need to be “Hamlet.” The audience generally enjoyed itself (though for once the near-obligatory standing ovation was miss-ing). My usual caveat: make up your own mind.
