    PREPARATIONFORWORSHIP

[Y]ou became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For theword of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but

in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speakabout it.

    - 1 Thessalonians 1:7-8

Then [Jesus] said to them, Whose head is this, and whose title? They answered,The emperors. Then He said to them, Give therefore to the emperor the things

that are the emperors, and to God the things that are Gods.

    - Matthew 22:20-21

I have held many things in my hands, and have lost them all; but whatever I haveplaced in God's hands, that I still possess.

    - Martin Luther (1483-1546)

    PRAYEROF CONFESSION

Almighty and heavenly Father,God of justice and peace, God of mercy and righteousness,You call us to a life of holiness, even as You are holy.Yet we confess that we have not heeded Your call.We have chosen self-interest over obedience,

preferred comfort over discipleship, followed culture rather than Your Word, and refused to believe in Your promise of new life.

Lord, have mercy upon us, and forgive us our sins.

    You are the bread for which we hunger;Yours is the life for which we yearn;

Yours are the suffering to whom we are sent;feed us, inspire us, and guide us, we pray, emptying ourselves to be filled by You,

trusting in Your all-sufficient grace, and following Your Son, who emptied Himself,

and gave His life as a ransom for othersfor it is in His holy, precious, and humble Name that we pray. Amen.

David Conte (b. 1955) is currently Professor of Composition and Conductor of the Con-servatory Chorus at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In addition to numerous ogan and choral works, Conte has written orchestral works and five operas. His Soliloquy, lik

its literary namesake, employs the different voices of the organ to represent a series of unspoken reflections. A plaintive and introspective melody with a dotted rhythm is heard onvarious registrations over a pulsing chordal accompaniment, gradually building in intensityand then subsiding in a quiet ending.

John Rutter is a British composer whose music is performed in churches and cathedralthroughout the world. Rutters compositions are chiefly choral, and include Christmas carols, anthems, and extended works such as a Gloria, a Magnificat, and a Requiem. His mosrecent composition was a commissioned anthem entitled This Is the Day, performed at the

wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. The Chancel Choir will sing this samanthem at the opening worship service for the Presbytery of the James Meeting in Februa2012. Todays anthem, Thy Perfect Love, is a gentle lullaby set to a 15th century text.

Today our Junior Choir joins us for the first time this season, singing a medley of threeChristian songs from Mexico, Argentina, and El Salvador.

Raymond Weidner is Director of Music and Organist at First Presbyterian Church inLynchburg, VA. In 2007 Weidner composed a collection of four organ works entitled FrenSketches. These postludes are appropriate for liturgical or concert use and are inspired by th

French Romantic tradition of organ composition. The openingPageantwas composed inmemory of Weidners organ teacher, David Ulrich.

    YOU C N HELP!

Grace Covenant has been giving non-perishable foods items to the William Byrd Community House for several years to assist in filling their food pantry. The William Byrd Comm

These are everyday items that FooStamp dollars will not cover and may be very costly to a low-income family. We have partnered with this ministry by giving non-perishable food items.
