What’s Inside: • Filipino Fiesta Pig Roast, October 19 • Parish Picnic, October 20 • Mass for Saint John Paul II, October 22 • Friday Fest Fish Fry, October 26

Today marks the official canonization of Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Sal-vador, who was martyred as he was celebrating Mass. We will celebrate on Sunday, October 14 at 1:30 PM with a processional, Mass and reception in the Fellowship Hall. Romero, El Salvador’s first saint

Romero was archbishop dur-ing a time of “great political crisis” in El Salvador and “outraged at seeing the vio-lence against the weak and the killing of priests and cate-chists, felt the need to as-sume an attitude of forti-tude.” He was outspoken against his country’s bloody civil war in the 1980s. He was gunned down during Mass in a hospital chapel March 24, 1980. His death is consid-ered by the Catholic Church to have been in “odium fidei,” meaning “in ha-tred of the faith.” Pope Paul VI

Pope Paul VI, the pontiff who

first appointed Romero a bish-

op and and in 1977 made him

Archbishop of San Salvador

will also be canonized. Pope

Paul, who led the Church from

1963-1978, is largely remembered by

his encyclical, Humanae Vitae, which

delivered a strong “no” to change and

reaffirmed the Church’s teaching on

birth control .

Papa Pablo VI

natalidad.
