Tori-no-Ichi (the Cock Fair)Tori-no-Ichi (the Cock Fair) is a festival held on the days of the cock in November every

year in Otori Shrines throughout Japan. Cocks are one of the signs of the zodiac that origi-nated in China. The fair has been a popular winter celebration in Japan since the Edo period. People flock to the shrines in hopes of increasing their luck in business and ensuring the safety of their families.

It is common to buy bamboo rakes at Cock Fairs. The rakes, shaped like eagle’s claws, are decorated with okame (flat-faced woman’s mask), sea bream, or other good luck charms. It is believed that such “claws” will be able to grasp good luck. There is a range of rakes available, from large expensive ones for businesses to smaller ones for personal use. If you ask for and get a dis-count, you can donate the difference to the shop so that you will be considered a sophisticated shopper.Cock Fair near Naka WardDates: Nov. 7 (Sun.) and 19 (Fri.)Venue: Kotohira Otori Shrine (1-3 Magane-cho, Minami-ku)Directions: A 15-minute walk from Bandobashi Station (municipal subway)
