Raiders improve to 6-0 in Bantam football
Don Fennell photoRichmond Raiders' Nine-man Bantam Division football team take a 5-0 unbeaten record into North Langley Saturday, hoping to emerge with sole possession of fi rst place in the Vancouver Mainland Football League standings.
First on the line Saturday in North Langleyby Don FennellSports Editor
Richmond Raiders can attribute much of their success to two things—team play and experience.
Heading into action Saturday at North Langley's McLeod
Stadium with sole possession of first place on the line, the Raiders' nine-man Bantam Division team has long been a work in progress.
Coach Rob Parmar believes the talent of the second-year players is unmatched
in the division, but is equally complimen-tary of the first-year players who've been playing football since they were eight years old.
"Although our roster is small, every player brings something unique to this team.," he says. "The offence has scored points decisively and can run or throw with equal effectiveness. And the defence has only allowed 40 points in five games. That said, there's still been steady improvements from all the players."
Five of the Raiders'
starters also play on Hugh Boyd Second-ary's team, and have shown great ability to manage their time commitments to both, adds Parmar.
This weekend will also feature the home openers for Richmond Peewee and Junor Bantam teams in the Gordon Sturtridge Football League. The Peewees kickoff at 10 a.m. Minoru Stadium Sunday, followed by the Junior Bantams at 11:30 a.m. Richmond's Flag Division team will also be in action at 9 a.m.

B.C. is launching its first dispute prevention and resolution framework for sport.
ViaSport, which oversees amateur sport in the province, is partnering with the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada and the B.C. Arbi-tration and Mediation Institute.
Disputes are a substantial drain for the sport system, costing clubs and organizations money and energy that could otherwise be invested back into their programs and participants. If not approached properly, disputes can cause rela-tionships to deteriorate and lead to lengthy court action which is expensive and time-consuming for all parties involved.
“With the resource based heavily on education and prevention, we want to help clubs and pro-vincial sports organizations create policies and processes that can prevent potential disputes from occurring," said Marie-Claude Asselin, ex-ecutive director and CEO of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre.
The framework will provide B.C. sport partners with a step-by-step approach to prevention, resolution and appeal. The resources available include workshops, best practice templates, pub-lications, case management guides and access to professional dispute resolution services.
To kick off the launch of this new resource, free dispute resolution workshops will be held Tues-day (Oct. 7) at Fortius Centre in Burnaby.
“ViaSport is pleased to (help) set a precedent for sport dispute prevention and resolution in B.C.,” said Cathy Priestner Allinger, ViaSport CEO. “This framework is the first step in our strategy to reduce the number and magnitude of disputes. We encourage our sport partners to use these re-sources and to attend the free workshops to learn more about minimizing the impact of disputes within their own organizations.”
The Dispute Prevention and Resolution Frame-work is now available on the ViaSport website at viasport.ca/dispute-prevention-resolution.

Richmond's Alisha Lau saved the best for last at the inaugural World Junior Girls Golf Championship which wrapped up Wednesday at the Angus glen Golf Club in Markham, Ont.
The 14-year-old Richmondite shot a fi nal-round 74 to complete the four-round event. Her previous scores of 83, 80 and 75 left her with a total score of 312 that helped Canada's second three-person team that included Jaclyn Lee, 17, of Cal-gary and Selena Costabile, 16, of Thornhill, Ont. tie for 13th overall.
Team USA won with a team-total score of 17-under par 559.

The sports community lost one of its greatest advocates with the passing last week of Denise Coutts.
Chair of Sport BC until her passing, the Richmond resident was unwavering in her support and promotion of sport in gen-eral.
Coutts worked at Sport BC for 17 years—first as the program co-ordinator at Basketball BC and then as the executive di-rector for Squash BC, Badmin-
ton BC and BC Disability Sports. Over the years she amassed more than 25 years of provin-cial, national and international multi-games sport experience as a player and coach; and as a volunteer and administrator.
"Denise was a tireless worker in the amateur sports world and led the way for women in sports to be fully recognized. Her work with Night Hoops is only one of many, many contributions. Working with Denise in many
areas is something I will always treasure including work on the oval sector committee," said Lawrie Johns, executive direc-tor of Basketball BC.
Coutts was a strong advocate for the Sport BC community and membership. She believed in the power of sport and had a great understanding of the role and contributions of provincial sport organizations to the prov-ince, and more importantly, to its communities.
