Thanks to a combination of talent and depth, Richmond Chaos con- tinue to be a dominant force in the Metro Women's Soccer League, win- ning their fourth consecutive Third Division start Sunday 6-2 over the Coastal FC Surf. While the Chaos boast a roster of 20 players, it can shrink fast, says coach Al Groff who last weekend lost one player to a possible season- ending injury, one to work, one to school and one loaned to Mike Fletcher's Red Devils in the First Di- vision. Then three hours before kick- off he learned three more would be out to the flu leaving the Chaos with only 13. Things didn't get any easier when sweeper Sarah Little was injured three minutes in. Challenging for the ball, she landed hard on her hand and dislocated her ring finger. But as she was helped off the pitch, Dani Pacheco—who had been loaned to the Devils for their first win of the season, 3-0 over CCB Piranhas—ar- rived and took her pace at the right midfield. Almost immediately, she took a cross from left midfielder Ja- nessa Murao and scored from about 20 feet out. The Surf quickly countered and tied the match at 1-1, but then Kelsey Lawrence began a remarkable run of goals for the Chaos including two before the half, one of them set up by centre midfielder Jenny Lyons and the other by relief centre midfielder Natalie Sczerkowsky. The goals were offset by a second Surf goal. The Chaos backfield was rebuilt on the fly after the injury to Little. Lydia Pengilley, in her second game of the season, played the sweeper position for the first time in her ca- reer while Jenn Forsberg returned after a week's absence to the stop- per spot. Fullbacks Andrea Bertram and Victoria Groff also played strong games with the Pacheco sisters, Ana and Dani along with Sczerkowsky providing some relief when Victoria Groff went in net in the last 25 min- utes of the second half. Lawrence completed a natural hat trick goal on a great lead pass by the other Chaos striker Taylor Bakken. Ly- ons banged in a long ball from far out to score a fifth Chaos goal off a centering pass from relief left mid- fielder Julia Badock, who started the game in net. Lawrence finished the scoring with great breakaway goal set up by a thread-the-needle pass from Lyons. sports Lawrence nets 4, including natural hat trick, as Chaos find yet another way to win From Page W3 Richmond outscored Vancouver Minor 14-5 in the crossover game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, leading 11-5 after six and scoring three more in the seventh en route to the final. Thanks to a combination of talent and depth, Richmond Chaos con-tinue to be a dominant force in the Metro Women's Soccer League, win-ning their fourth consecutive Third Division start Sunday 6-2 over the Coastal FC Surf.

While the Chaos boast a roster of 20 players, it can shrink fast, says coach Al Groff who last weekend lost one player to a possible season-ending injury, one to work, one to school and one loaned to Mike Fletcher's Red Devils in the First Di-vision. Think you’ve been busy? Check this out.

In the last nine days, Richmond’s Nathan Leonhardt has played eight rounds of tournament golf in Ka-mloops, Toronto and Langley. And,

ironically, he got better as he went along.

“I got home just before midnight (from Kamloops) and onto a ight to Toronto the next morning for the Canadian Tour’s Fall Qualifying School,” explained an exhausted Leonhardt. “I missed keeping my card third year by $150, so I had to re-qualify.”

Leonhardt, 27, did just that, n-ishing 10th to earn full status for the 2013 season which will be his third consecutive on the Canadian Tour.

A couple of hours after Q school, it was back on the red eye and

home to play in the Vancouver Golf Tour Championship Tobiano Pro-Am last weekend at Langley’s Pagoda Ridge. His course-record 65 in the second round earned him his rst pro event victory.

“I’ve been progressively getting better for a while now and been able to gain some more con dence with the amount I’ve been playing,” he said. “It can be tough to play a tournament one week and then another a couple weeks later, you never really get into a groove. Even though these past couple weeks have been hectic and exhausting, I’ve been able to get into a groove.”

Conditions at Pagoda Ridge were excellent, with just a slight breeze both days. Leonhardt said the course was set up much easier on the rst day, but he didn’t have a lot of energy.

“I played solid and my only bogey came on my last hole, due to a lack of focus,” he said. “But for the sec-ond round the tees were all the way back and the pins were in tough positions. I played OK on the front, but my putter got hot on the back. I had four birdies and an eagle on the back nine.”

Next up is the PGA Tour Q School in three weeks in Beaumont, Calif.

Chuckers fall ball champs

The Richmond Chuck-ers are fall ball champi-ons.

A split-squad of Ban-tam-aged players went 6-0 last week to win the fth annual Aldergrove Fall Ball Classic Tourna-ment.

The Chuckers opened with a come-from-be-hind 5-4 win over the White Rock Tritons Tues-day, scoring three times in the top of the seventh inning. A pair of lopsided wins, 10-2 and 10-1 over the North Shore Twins 2 and the Vancouver Mounties followed on Friday night and Satur-day morning.

On Saturday afternoon, the Chuckers faced the host Aldergrove Dodg-ers Red team again won 6-3. Despite giving up only two hits, Richmond entered the seventh inning trailing 3-2 but again dug deep, scoring four times in the top half of the inning. The win guaranteed Richmond a rst-place nish in pool B and a crossover game on Sunday.

Then three hours before kick-off he learned three more would be out to the flu leaving the Chaos with only 13.

Things didn't get any easier when sweeper Sarah Little was injured three minutes in. Challenging for the ball, she landed hard on her hand

and dislocated her ring finger. But as she was helped off the pitch, Dani Pacheco—who had been loaned to the Devils for their first win of the season, 3-0 over CCB Piranhas—ar-rived and took her pace at the right midfield. Almost immediately, she took a cross from left midfielder Ja-nessa Murao and scored from about 20 feet out.

Lydia Pengilley, in her second game

of the season, played the sweeper position for the first time in her ca-reer while Jenn Forsberg returned after a week's absence to the stop-per spot.  Fullbacks Andrea Bertram and Victoria Groff also played strong games with the Pacheco sisters, Ana and Dani along with Sczerkowsky providing some relief when Victoria Groff went in net in the last 25 min-utes of the second half.

Lawrence completed a natural hat trick goal on a great lead pass by the other Chaos striker Taylor Bakken. Ly-ons banged in a long ball from far out to score a fifth Chaos goal off a centering pass from relief left mid-fielder Julia Badock, who started the game in net. Lawrence finished the scoring with great breakaway goal set up by a thread-the-needle pass from Lyons.

From Page W3Richmond outscored Vancouver Minor

14-5 in the crossover game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, leading 11-5 after six and scoring three more in the seventh en route to the final.

In a rematch of Saturday afternoon’s

game, Richmond met the host Aldergrove Red team in Sunday’s final.   Richmond jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and, thanks to some quality pitching and excellent defence, cruised to a 3-1 win.

The Chuckers were coached by Alex Klenman.
