Welcome to the 2019 Open House New York Weekend! When most of us think about OHNY Weekend, we tend to think about the buildings and places we get to visit. It might be that rarely opened Beaux Arts masterpiece you walk by every day or a rooftop with the kind of endless skyline views that we all love. Maybe this year, you will visit a historic house dating to the city’s earliest days or one of the more than two dozen architecture studios where the buildings of tomorrow are being designed.

Wherever you choose to go this OHNY Weekend, I ask you to remember one important point: the doors are open, to you and to everyone else. OHNY Weekend is a celebration of architecture, but it is equally a celebration of an open city. Ask any historian and they will tell you that New York’s openness–to new people, new ideas, new ways of living–has been the critical element that fueled its rise and continues to sustain it as the greatest city in the world.

But openness is not something any of us should take for granted. It is something that has to be nurtured and protected, but it also requires our participation. An open door is pointless if no one feels welcome to walk through it. So thank you for being a part of this year’s OHNY Weekend. And our deepest gratitude as well to the 300+ sites that will open their doors and to the 1,400 volunteers who turn out each year to staff all of these amazing sites. Their generosity is a gift to all of us.

Best wishes for a wonderful OHNY Weekend!

Dear Friends:

I am delighted to welcome everyone to the 17th annual Open House New York Weekend.

New York’s iconic architecture and distinctive built environment reflect the diversity of our 8.6 million residents. The annual Open House New York Weekend invites people of all backgrounds to explore more than 300 historic and contemporary buildings, private residences, infrastructure sites, and public spaces across the five boroughs, and provides rarely-offered tours and talks with architects, civic leaders, urban planners, historians, and preservationists.

The 2019 OHNY Weekend presents many favorite returning attractions like the Woolworth Building, the United Nations Headquarters, and the NYC Department of Sanitation’s Manhattan 1/2/5 Garage and Salt Shed. Additionally, several new locations join this year’s lineup, including the midcentury-style TWA Hotel at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Pier 35 waterfront eco-park on the East River Esplanade, and Fotografiska, a new photography museum in a landmark Renaissance Revival building on Park Avenue South. Also featured this Weekend are the popular “Open Studios” series, showcasing the workspaces of leading architects and designers, and expanded Saturday programming at the Brooklyn Navy Yard – the only day of the year when the public can access this industrial park, which houses a rooftop farm and several fashion, film, manufacturing, and fine arts businesses.

On behalf of all New Yorkers, I applaud OHNY’s organizers, supporters, and participants for their efforts to highlight New York’s architectural heritage and celebrate the creative visionaries who are forging our bright future. Please accept my best wishes for an inspiring and memorable weekend.

Sincerely,

Gregory Wessner EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OPEN HOUSE NEW YORK

Sites & Sounds Brooklyn Army Terminal

Want to hear about the hidden histories behind some of your favorite Open House New York Weekend sites? The Gotham Center for New York City History invites you to listen to Sites and Sounds, its ongoing podcast series exploring some of the famous architectural monuments, civic structures, historic homes, natural sites, and public spaces that open their doors for OHNY Weekend.

The Brooklyn Army Terminal is the premier affordable hub for modern industrial businesses, entrepreneurs, and working families in New York City. The campus has recently completed renovations to open the historic property to the public and increase the community’s connectivity to the Sunset Park waterfront.

Now in its second year, the series presents noted experts speaking about the history or importance of a given site. The narratives can be used to supplement in-person visits and to bring the OHNY Weekend experience to anyone unable to see these historical treasures. Constructed by the US Army in 1918-19, BAT served as a major military supply center for nearly 50 years. At its peak during World War II, 20,000 military and civilian personnel were employed at BAT. At that point, it functioned as the headquarters for the New York Port of Embarkation, the nation’s busiest port, sending more than 3 million men overseas from facilities around the region. Cass Gilbert, better known for his Beaux Arts and Gothic buildings like the Woolworth Building, was BAT’s principal architect, designing what was at the time the largest concrete structure in the world. Since BAT was acquired by the City of New York in 1981, New York City Economic Development Corporation has renovated the campus in phases to transform the facility into a modern, thriving industrial campus, with over 100 companies making everything from high-end chocolate to 3D-printed clothing and sustainable furniture.

This year, in addition to the building’s awe-inspiring atrium, dozens of artist studios will be open to visit. Brooklyn Army Terminal is Open Access and can be visited on Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm. Tours with Turnstile Tours will be offered at 2, 3, and 4pm on both days.

Organized in partnership with the Brooklyn Army Terminal and the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
