RegulationsgoverningarrangementsforinternalassessmentsarecontainedintheJCQInstructions for conducting non-examination assessments.

• OCRexpectsteacherstosuperviseandguidelearnerswhoareundertakingworkthatisinternally assessed.

• Thedegreeofteacherguidancewillvaryaccordingtothekindofworkbeingundertaken.Itshouldberemembered,however,thatlearnersarerequiredtoreachtheirownjudgementsandconclusions.

• Whensupervisinginternallyassessedtasks,teachersareexpectedto:offerlearnersadvice

abouthowbesttoapproachsuchtasksexercisesupervisionoftheworkinordertomonitorprogressandtopreventplagiarism,ensurethattheworkiscompletedinaccordancewiththespecificationrequirementsandcanbeassessedinaccordancewiththespecifiedmarkdescriptionsandprocedures.

• Workshould,whereverpossible,becarried outundersupervision.However,itisacceptedthatsometasksmayrequirelearnerstoundertake work outside the centre. Authentication of learner’s work

Centresmustdeclarethattheworksubmittedforassessmentisthelearner’sownbycompletingacentreauthenticationform(CCS160).ThisinformationmustberetainedatthecentreandbeavailableonrequesttoeitherOCRortheJCQcentreinspectionservice.

ItmustbekeptuntilthedeadlinehaspassedforcentrestosubmitaReviewofResults(RoR).OncethisdeadlinehaspassedandcentreshavenotrequestedaRoR,thisevidencecanbedestroyed.

TheHeadofCentreisrequiredtoprovideadeclarationtotheJCQaspartoftheannualNCNupdate,conductedintheautumnterm,toconfirmthatthecentreismeetingalloftherequirementsdetailedinthespecification.

AnyfailurebyacentretoprovidetheHeadofCentreAnnualDeclarationwillresultinyourcentrestatusbeingsuspendedandcouldleadtothewithdrawalofourapprovalforyoutooperateasacentre.

Private Candidates

PrivatecandidatesmayenterforOCRassessments.

Aprivatecandidateissomeonewhopursuesacourseofstudyindependentlybuttakesanexaminationorassessmentatanapprovedexaminationcentre.Aprivatecandidatemaybeapart-timestudent,someonetakingadistancelearningcourse,orsomeonebeingtutoredprivately.TheymustbebasedintheUK.

Thepurposeofmoderationistobringthemarkingofinternally-assessedcomponentsinallparticipatingcentrestoanagreedstandard.Thisisachievedbycheckingasampleofeachcentre’smarkingoflearner’swork.

Followinginternalstandardisation,centressubmitmarkstoOCRandthemoderator.Ifthereare10orfewer,alltheworkshouldbesubmittedformoderationatthesametimeasmarksaresubmitted.

OncemarkshavebeensubmittedtoOCRandyourmoderator,centreswillreceiveamoderationsamplerequest.Sampleswillincludeworkfromacrosstherangeofattainmentofthelearners’work.

dependentonthestyleofteachingandlearningadoptedforeachunit.

AllcentresenteringlearnersfortheOCREntry LevelCertificateinGeographymustsubmita sampleoflearners’filesasevidenceformoderation.Learners’filescanbesubmittedelectronicallyviatheOCRRepositoryorsubmittedforpostalmoderation.Seesection4afortherelevantentrycodes.

AlltheEntryLevelGeographytasksareinternallyassessed.Theyaremarkedbytheteacherandinternallystandardisedbythecentre.MarksarethensubmittedtoOCRby15Mayonanannualbasis, afterwhichmoderationtakesplaceinaccordance withOCRprocedures.Thepurposeofmoderationistoensurethatthestandardoftheawardofmarksforworkisthesameforeachcentreandthateachteacherhasappliedthestandardsappropriatelyacrosstherangeoflearnerswithinthecentre.

OncemarkshavebeensubmittedtoOCRand yourmoderator,centreswillreceiveamoderationsamplerequest.

Thesamplewillconsistof10learnersfromacross thecentre’sattainmentrange.Where10learnersorfewerareenteredforthequalification,thecentre willsubmitfilesforalllearners.Filessubmittedformoderationshouldbeclearlylabelledandinclude thefollowingdetails:

• Centrenumber

• Centrename

• Candidatenumber

• Candidatename

• Componentcodeandtitle

• Tasktitle.

Worksubmittedformoderationshouldbesecuredwithtreasurytags.Eachlearner’sfileshouldinclude acoversheetwithadetailsofthemarksawarded foreachtaskinaccordancewiththemarking criteria.Iftheworkistobesubmittedelectronically,thiscoversheetshouldalsobesubmittedelectronicallywithineachlearner’sfile.

Eachlearnerfileshouldcontainthefollowingevidenceandshouldbesubmittedforeachlearnerinthesample:

• DynamicWorld

• FieldworkNotebook

• PersonalProject.
