WorksubmittedfortheEntryLevelcomponentsshouldreflectthestandardexpectedforalearnerafterafullEntryLevelcourseofstudy.
AllcomponentsforOCR’sEntryLevelinGeographyareinternallyassessedandexternallymoderated.
Learners’workshouldbemarkedbythecentreassessortothemarkingcriteriaintherelevanttable,usinga‘best-fit’approach.
Markingshouldbepositive,rewardingachievementratherthanpenalisingfailureoromissions.Theawardingofmarksmustbedirectlyrelatedtothemarkingcriteria.
Teachersshouldusetheirprofessionaljudgementinselectingleveldescriptorsthatbestdescribetheworkofthelearnertoplacethemintheappropriatebandforeachassessmentobjectivestrand.
Toselectthemostappropriatemarkintheleveldescriptor,teachersshouldusethefollowingguidance:
• wherethelearner’sworkconvincinglymeetsthestatement,thehighestmarkshouldbeawarded
• wherethelearner’sworkadequatelymeetsthestatement,themostappropriatemarkinthemiddleoftherangeshouldbeawarded
• wherethelearner’sworkjustmeetsthestatement,thelowestmarkshouldbeawarded.
Teachersshouldusethefullrangeofmarksavailabletothemandawardfullmarksinanylevelforworkwhichfullymeetsthatdescriptor.
There should be clear evidence that work has beenattemptedandsomeworkproduced.Ifalearnersubmitsnoworkforataskthenthelearnershouldbeindicatedasbeingabsentfromthattask. 4c. Admin of non-exam assessment
RegulationsgoverningarrangementsforinternalassessmentsarecontainedintheJCQInstructions for conducting non-examination assessments.
• OCRexpectsteacherstosuperviseandguidelearnerswhoareundertakingworkthatisinternally assessed.
• Thedegreeofteacherguidancewillvaryaccordingtothekindofworkbeingundertaken.Itshouldberemembered,however,thatlearnersarerequiredtoreachtheirownjudgementsandconclusions.
• Whensupervisinginternallyassessedtasks,teachersareexpectedto:offerlearnersadvice
abouthowbesttoapproachsuchtasksexercisesupervisionoftheworkinordertomonitorprogressandtopreventplagiarism,ensurethattheworkiscompletedinaccordancewiththespecificationrequirementsandcanbeassessedinaccordancewiththespecifiedmarkdescriptionsandprocedures.
• Workshould,whereverpossible,becarried outundersupervision.However,itisacceptedthatsometasksmayrequirelearnerstoundertake work outside the centre. Where this isthecase,thecentremustensurethatsufficientsupervisedworktakesplacetoallowtheteachersconcernedtoauthenticateeachlearner’sworkwithconfidence.
Authentication of learner’s work
Centresmustdeclarethattheworksubmittedforassessmentisthelearner’sownbycompletingacentreauthenticationform(CCS160).ThisinformationmustberetainedatthecentreandbeavailableonrequesttoeitherOCRortheJCQcentreinspectionservice.
ItmustbekeptuntilthedeadlinehaspassedforcentrestosubmitaReviewofResults(RoR).OncethisdeadlinehaspassedandcentreshavenotrequestedaRoR,thisevidencecanbedestroyed.

Head of Centre Annual Declaration
TheHeadofCentreisrequiredtoprovideadeclarationtotheJCQaspartoftheannualNCNupdate,conductedintheautumnterm,toconfirmthatthecentreismeetingalloftherequirementsdetailedinthespecification.
AnyfailurebyacentretoprovidetheHeadofCentreAnnualDeclarationwillresultinyourcentrestatusbeingsuspendedandcouldleadtothewithdrawalofourapprovalforyoutooperateasacentre.
Private Candidates
PrivatecandidatesmayenterforOCRassessments.
Aprivatecandidateissomeonewhopursuesacourseofstudyindependentlybuttakesanexaminationorassessmentatanapprovedexaminationcentre.Aprivatecandidatemaybeapart-timestudent,someonetakingadistancelearningcourse,orsomeonebeingtutoredprivately.TheymustbebasedintheUK.
PrivatecandidatesneedtocontactOCRapprovedcentrestoestablishwhethertheyarepreparedtohostthemasaprivatecandidate.ThecentremaychargeforthisfacilityandOCRrecommendsthatthearrangementismadeearlyinthecourse.

TheEntryLevelCertificateinGeographyrequireslearnerstocompletethreetasks(DynamicWorld,FieldworkNotebookandPersonalProject).TheFieldworkNotebookincludespracticalexperienceoffieldwork.Thepracticalexperienceoffieldworkisanessentialpartofthecourseandwillallowlearnerstodevelopskillsforfurtherstudyoremployment.
Privatecandidatesneedtomakecontactwithacentrewhere they will be allowed to carry out the required practicalactivities.ThecentremaychargeforthisfacilityandOCRrecommendsthatthearrangementismadeearlyinthecourse.
Centresmustcarryoutinternalstandardisationtoensurethatmarksawardedbydifferentteachersare

Moderation
Thepurposeofmoderationistobringthemarkingofinternally-assessedcomponentsinallparticipatingcentrestoanagreedstandard.Thisisachievedbycheckingasampleofeachcentre’smarkingoflearner’swork.
Followinginternalstandardisation,centressubmitmarkstoOCRandthemoderator.Ifthereare10orfewer,alltheworkshouldbesubmittedformoderationatthesametimeasmarksaresubmitted.
OncemarkshavebeensubmittedtoOCRandyourmoderator,centreswillreceiveamoderationsamplerequest.Sampleswillincludeworkfromacrosstherangeofattainmentofthelearners’work.
Therearetwowaystosubmitasample:
Moderation via the OCR Repository–WhereyouuploadelectroniccopiesoftheworkincludedinthesampletotheOCRRepositoryandyourmoderatoraccessestheworkfromthere.
Postal moderation–Whereyoupostthesampleofworktothemoderator.
Themethodthatwillbeusedtosubmitthemoderationsamplemust be specifiedwhenmaking entries. TherelevantentrycodesaregiveninSection4aabove.
Alllearners’workmustbesubmittedusingthesameentryoption.Itisnotpossibleforcentrestoofferbothoptionswithinthesameseries.
Eachlearner’sworkshouldhaveacoversheetattachedtoitwithasummaryofthemarksawardedforthetasks.Iftheworkistobesubmittedindigitalformat,thiscoversheetshouldalsobesubmittedelectronicallywithineachlearner’sfolder.Formoreinformationontheevidencerequiredformoderation,seesection5dFiles.
