you to suggest a feeding plan for thehorses they will be using in the upcomingOlympic Games. They are concerned

about the fact that they will need to shiptheir animals to England. How should theyapproach the nutrition of their highperformance horses in the time leading

    up to the games?

Deworming Good worming protocols and pasture management plans are essential incontrolling parasites.

As horses transition between pastures and eventually off pasture for theOlympics, parasites will be less of a concern.

Deworm based on conditions and individual management plans to minimizedevelopment of parasite resistance.

Common types of worms (and dewormers) in the UK: redworms (Ivermectin or Moxidectin) tapeworms (Pyrantel) bots (Ivermectin) lungworms (Ivermectin, Moxidectin, or Fenbendazole) Strongyloides westeri (Ivermectin, Moxidectin, or Fenbendazole) Parascaris equorum (Ivermectin, Moxidectin, or Fenbendazole)

Especially consider deworming for seasonal worms (such as bots) prior to theOlympics, which are more prevalent in the late summer/early fall. Most otherworms do not become prevalent until the fall, however, it is important to beaware of trends and outbreaks in your environment/intended environment.

Any dewormers should be given upon arrival in a new environment andstabled for at least 2 days following.

    Vaccinations

Required vaccines for international travel (specifically, entrance into the UK):

Rabies Equine Influenza Tetanus Equine Herpes Virus Strangles (seasonal)

2 doses, 4 weeks apart followed by a booster every 3-6 monthsdepending on enrivionmental risk/mosquito season

The UK, and England specifically, has problems with

Equine Infectious Anemia (lentivirus via flies). attenuated live vaccine is recommended

Fdration Equestre Internationale (FEI) rules requireboosters every 6 months for competing horses
