OEC partners with Foundationfor Energy Education

OEC and the Foundation for Energy Education, an affiliate ofthe Texas Alliance of Energy Producers, formed a partnership toexpand OEC’s education outreach in schools across Texas. The partner-ship is focused on expanding usage of OEC’s Mobile Oilfield LearningUnit (MOLU) across the state.

The Foundation funded MOLU visits to the Rio Grande Valley inMay with more than 500 students experiencing the hands-on learningopportunity. In addition to the visits funded through the Foundation forEnergy Education, Keppel AmFELS provided a grant to host the MOLUat the Children’s Museum of Brownsville and at the Harmony ScienceAcademy. The MOLU will visit the Abilene, Amarillo and Wichita Fallsareas, which will conclude the Foundation visits for 2012.

As a part of the partnership, OEC has trained facilitators inFoundation-selected cities in order to increase participation of elementaryand secondary teachers in the Center’s Project E3: Expanding EnergyEducation workshops. The June conference included a teacher from theRio Grande Valley.

The MOLU is a traveling exhibit that features six, self-contained,kiosk-style learning centers with curriculum-based, hands-on activitiesabout energy and the technologies and sciences involved with the oiland natural gas industry. The MOLU is particularly geared to 5th gradestudents, since science, including energy, is a focus area for that schoolyear’s TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test. However, the MOLU is also appropriate for other age groups. Curriculum for eachof the 24 activities in the MOLU is based on national and Texas statestandards (TEKS - Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills).

Offshore Technology ConferenceProvides Grant toOffshore Energy Center

OEC received a grant from the Offshore Technology Conference(OTC) to fund MOLU visits to five Houston area schools during theOffshore Technology Conference held April 30-May 4. The schoolsincluded McNeil in Richmond; Village School, ThompsonElementary and Klentzman Intermediate School in Houston; andPin Oak Middle School in Bellaire.

“It is quite an honor for our MOLU program to receive this grantfrom the OTC,” said Sandra Mourton, OEC’s Executive Director, whenshe learned about the grant. “It adds even more credibility to our alreadysuccessful and popular learning tool.”

“The OTC board is excited to sponsor this outstanding education-al program,” said Steve Balint, OTC chairman. “The Offshore EnergyCenter’s outreach program is a natural extension of the EnergyEducation Institute for teachers and students every year during OTC.Any way we can extend the reach to students and teachers only enrich-es our industry’s future.”

In other MOLU news, the traveling exhibit was displayed at theGeorge R. Brown Convention Center in Houston during the Shell EcoMarathon March 31, where hundreds of students had the opportunity torotate through the MOLU’s six kiosks.
