TWO WEKKS IN HONG KONGMARJORIE BURMAN of Shark River Hills, Neptune, re.

cently returned from a two.week stay in HONG KONG, which in-cluded a trip into mainland China.

She reports, I was the guest of GLORIA and HAROLD HAR.RISON, summer residents of Ocean Grove, who are serving asshort-term missionaries with the Oriental Missionary Society. They have been there since October and will return to the Grove,in April.

•One of my impressions was the masses of people Youjust don't have your own place on the sidewafc. There are liter-ally thousands of store's, shops and sta-Hs selling Hong Kongand Chinese imported products all vying for your trade. Themajority of the people there h=we adopted western style dress.,especially the youn/? people with their jeans and sweaters- Theslickedback hairdo, pajamas and bl?ck slippers are seen onlyamong a few of the older generation.

About 25,000 people live in the area (all hi-rise apartments)where the HARRISONS are staying. It is called Telford Gardens,rn Kowloon Bay. The complex houses a shopping center on twolevels, where' you can buy just about anything you need. It in.eludes two small super-markets, a large fresh food market, a Mc-Donald's which is very popular with the young people, post office, book store, restaurants, western-type drug stores, clothingstores, beauty shops, theater, an Olympic size swimming poolwith tennis courts on the roof. There are small park-like settingswith playground equipment and fountains. All the area is keptexceptionally clean. The apartment dwellers are not allowed tokeep dogs or cats so in some homes they have substituted birdsas pets and on any given day enn be seen "walking" their birds, eage and all-

There is construction going on all over Hong Kong. Most twoor three.story buildings have been replaced with tall skyscrapers.

Public transportation is by bus, taxi or subway. The latteris called the M.T-R. and is clean, quiet and efficient — nograffiti.

Hong Kong is famous for its beautiful harbor. We rode theferry across from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island for about 6c'U.S. money) Ocean Terminal, where1 the pleasure cruise boatsdock, has beautiful, modern shops for the tourists' convenience. That area was especially beautiful at night with the mountainsin the background ?>nd the sparkle of the tights from the build-i-ngs and the boats.

The three of us took an escorted two-dav one night trip intomainland China. We stayed overnrt© ;n a modern, comfortablehotel in Canton, now called Guanzhou. Our tour guide was ayoung married woman of 29. She was both kind and coopera-tive. We were escorted to Dr. Sun Yat.sen Memorial Hall, whichseats 4,700 people, a beautiful building which is used for cul-tural programs. We visited an Ivory Factory where we watchedworkers doing very delicate carving with mostly hand tools alsovisited a Jade1 Factory which was a cooperative and we were toldthe owners are allowed to keep wh?t profit they make.

Our guide told us thart >Mao TseJtung made a serious mistakeby being responsibh for the Cultural Revolution, when he turnedyoung people loose on the streets to cause havoc and destruc-tion; schools, churches and all public buildings were closeddown for about 10 yrs- We could still see evidence of some ofthat destruction.

We also visited a Confucian Temple, much in need of re-pair, also a Pagoda Where we witnessed a couple of older peo.pie at worship.

We were taken to the State tourist shop, called the Friend-ship Store to brows* and shop. It abounded with ivory, jadeand cloisonne artifacts and jewelry.

Each person has his or her own bike, with a license plate. All cars belong to the State. Traffic on the streets was comprisedmostly of bicycles, cabs and buses, no traffic lights to speak of.In busy intersections, there were police directing traffic.

Just before our departure by train to Hong Kong we weretaken to the Commodities Fair Building where we made a few

additional nurchases. Twice a year for a week at a time merch-ants come from all parts of the world make purchases there.

It was 10 or 15 degrees colder in Canton than Hong Kong-The buildings are old—no construction going on that we couldsee.

It was an educational and rewarding trip and it's also grandto be back home-

Auditorium Park once wasa little acre of floweringJAPANESE CHERRY TREES.

Each spring was a cele-bration as the floweringorientals erupted into thou-sands of blossoms. Centen-nial Park was a microcosmof the District of Columbia'srenowned mall and Reflect-ing Pond.

Trustee William E. "UncleBil l" Thomson and ManagerJoseph Thoma were respon-sible for the planting ofOcean Grove's cherry treesand had no trouble financ-ing the project. (Fifty YearsAgo in The Times a fewweeks ago.)

T i m e , adverse weather,roaming pets, and vandal-ism have taken their toll.

As of 1985, just ONE flow-ering cherry tree remains, and it looks infirm. Itslower limbs scrap-a t h eground.

Think Summer. . . on pag- 127 128 129 of Daniel's Book''From five to six hundred pretty little crafts used tofloat at once on Wesley Lake during those far-backsummers.
