Occlusal Projections
Image Field Projection of Central Ray Point of Entry
Anterior Maxillary Occlusal Projection Anterior maxilla and dentition Anterior floor of the nasal floor Canine to canine
Vertical angulation (+45 deg) Horizontal angulation (0 deg)
Tip of nose toward middle of receptor
Topographical Maxillary Occlusal Projection Palate Zygomatic process of the axilla Anteroinferior aspects of maxillary sinus Nasolacrimal canals Second molar to second molar Nasal septum
Vertical angulation (+65 deg) Horizontal angulation (0 deg)
Bridge of nose just below the nasion towards middle of the receptor
Lateral Maxillary Occlusal Projection Quadrant of alveolar ridge of the maxilla Inferolateral of the maxillary sinus Tuberosity Lateral incisor to contralateral third molar Zygomatic process superimposed over the roots
Receptor long axis parallel to the sagittal plane Receptor extend laterally 1 cm past the buccal
cusps Vertical angulation (+60 deg) Horizontal angulation (0 deg)
2 cm below the lateral canthus of the eye towards center of the receptor
Anterior Mandibular Occlusal Projection Anterior portion of the mandible Canine to canine Inferior cortical border of the mandible
Seat patient tilted back so occlusal plane 45 deg above horizontal
Vertical angulation (-10 deg) This give the ray -55 deg of angulation to
the plane of the receptor Horizontal angulation (0 deg)
Midline and through the tip of the chin
Topographical Mandibular Occlusal Projection
Soft tissue of the floor of the mouth Lingual and buccal plates of the mandible Second molar to second molar Exposure time is reduced to half the time
Seat the patient in a semi-reclining position Head tilted back so that the ala-tragus line is
almost perpendicular to the floor Anterior border of the receptor should be 1 cm
beyond the mandibular central incisors
Midline through the floor of the mouth 3 cm below the chin
Lateral Mandibular Occlusal Projection Soft tissue of half of the floor of the mouth Buccal and lingual cortical plates of half of the
mandible Lateral incisor to contralateral third molar Exposure time is reduced to half the time
Seat the patient in a semi-reclining position Head tilted back so that the ala-tragus line is
almost perpendicular to the floor Receptor long axis parallel to the sagittal plane Receptor extend laterally 1 cm past the buccal
cusps
Below the chin 3 cm posterior to
the chin 3 cm lateral to the
midline
