Occam’s Razor
Occam's (or Ockham's) Razor is a principle attributed to the 14th century logician and
Franciscan Friar William of Ockham. The principle states that "Entities should not be
multiplied unnecessarily." Choose the simplest theory over a complex one to explain a
phenomenon as it is going to be the most accurate one. We, at Occams, believe in the Occam’s
principle and apply the same to our deliverables so that our clients are not lost in multiple and
complex analysis. We aim to deliver accurate and relevant analysis in a very simple but
comprehensive yet interesting format.

Chap# 1. INTRODUCTION
Traditionally succinic acid has been produced from petroleum. In recent times, Succinic is
emerging as one of the most competitive bio based chemicals. The US department of energy has
included succinic acid among the top 12 value added bio-based chemicals. Succinic Acid is an
intermediate in many chemical processes and is used in the production of various products in a
fragmented industry that has multiple players in this production process. The market shows a huge
potential of growth depended vastly on the sustainable production of bio-based succinic acid. The
global succinic acid market is poised to grow to nearly $1.3billion by the year 2020.
Succinic acid is a chemical which has a large number of applications ranging from BDO, polymers,
fibres, pharmaceuticals, food, polyurethanes, plasticizers to dyes and coatings. However the major
demand originates from coating, resins, BDO, plasticizers and polyurethanes along with the food
industry. Currently there is very small number of companies producing succinic acid in large
amounts. Most of the companies are small scale and with limited capacity.
Developing countries like China and India are dotting with small scale producers of succinic acid.

Global Succinic Acid and Bio-Succinic Acid Market – Trends 2014-2020
- 11 -
There is a high level of growing interest in the applications of bio-based succinic acid for the
production of biodegradable polymers. Environment concerns are leading both consumers and
governments to be more demanding of eco-friendly products. Research and development has been
increasingly focused to make bio-sucinic acid commercially viable. Genetically modified organism,
E.coli is used for converting sugar to succinic acid. The bio based succinic acid is comparatively
costlier than the petrochemicals available in the market, especially now that the price of petroleum
has taken a huge dip. The processing cost is much more than the petrochemicals. It is also due to
the huge investment in setting up the plant and the comparatively less production due to less
demand. However, the demand is increasing gradually and would increase at a faster pace in the
coming 5-10 years.

Succinic acid works as an intermediate for many products which includes BDO, polyurethanes,
alkyd resins, plasticizers, pharmaceuticals and food industry. It comes in three grades:
Pharmaceutical grade
Food grade and
Industrial grade
Food and beverage industry is among the leading consumer markets for succinic acid. Succinic acid
is used as flavouring agent, softening agent, preservative, and is used in packaging.
Succinic acid has also come out as an alternative for many industrial chemicals. The industrial
usage of succinic acid includes use in the production of 1, 4 butandiol, plasticizers, polyester polyols
and resins. Maleic anhydride, adipic acid, and phthalic anhydride. These chemicals are used as
building block of various substitutes such as BDO, plasticizers, polyester polyols, and alkyd resins.
