Brazil is a mixed country with people of widely different heritages, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and colours, and we are proud of this. We are all Brazilians: tolerant and broad-minded without religious or racial prejudice.

We are a WEC member since 1928 and the realization of the 2019 Congress in Rio de Janeiro, for the second time Latin America and the Caribbean, will be very important to the integration of WEC with the region's energy communities.

The city of Rio, the 'Marvelous City', famous worldwide for its beauty, with its magnificent beaches, tropical weather,charm and friendly way of being of itscariocapeople– will be a unique setting for the 2019 World Energy Congress delegates and accompanying persons.

Rio has hosted numerous world class events, includingthe United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development/the Earth Summit where the UN Framework Convention on

Climate Change was signed, Rio+20 and the Rio 2007 Pan-American Games and the 17th World Petroleum Congress.

This year Brazil is hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup and in 2016 Rio will welcome the Olympic Games. Large-scale infrastructure improvement projects are in progress to prepare for these events. Many new hotels will be available and the transport infrastructure will be considerably improved. All major airlines have regular flights to Rio de Janeiro and connections to all Brazilian airports.



Brazil’s booming energy industry and its role in the region

“Brazil's energy sector remains one of the least carbon-intensive in the world, despite greater

availability and use of fossil fuels.”International Energy Agency, World Energy Outlook 2013

Brazil´s role in Latin America could be measured by its GNP in comparison to the other countries in South America. In 2013, Brazil's GNP reached US$ 2.24 trillion, which represents about 50% of the region's total. The country is more than a regional economic power; it is one of the five leading emerging economies in the world, i.e. “BRICS” where “B” stands for Brazil.

If the Brazilian energy sector could be summarized in one word, that word would be “opportunity”. The country is already one of the largest energy producers in the world, and soon it will become a significant oil exporter. Brazil's energy sector is one of the least carbon-intensive in the world, despite the country's vast fossil energy resources, mainly oil and natural gas. Given our large and diverse energy resource endowment, we will be able to meet the growing demand for energy without compromising our export capacity and unique environment. In Brazil´s emerging and vibrant economy, energy has a double role: it is an input into industry and other economic activities and at the same time a tool for economic and social development, a combination which is rare amongst countries with advanced economies. Brazilian energy industries offer investment opportunities which will support technological innovation and use its skilled human resources.

The Brazilian energy mix is clean with a large share of renewables. The electricity market is based on a major national interconnected system. Currently, the total installed generating capacity in the country is 118GW;whereby hydropower accounts for nearly 85%. On current estimates,further 142GW will be added to the Brazilian power generation system by 2035 to meet the fast growing demand. Approximately 70GW of this new capacity is expected to come from hydropower projects. The installed capacity of wind power generation will reach 8.7GW in 2017.

Brazil currently has 15.6 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, of which 75% located in offshore deep water. It is estimated that by 2035, Brazil is likely to discover further 100 billion barrels of oil, with

85% of the total coming from deep water, mainly in the promising pre-salt area in Santos Basin. Oil production, currently at 2.2 million barrels per day, will reach 4-4.5 million barrels by 2020 andrise

to 6-7 million barrels by 2035. In 2019, the year of the Congress, Brazil will be at the highest

slopepoint of this growth curve. According to the IEA, until 2035, 657 billion dollars per year will be invested in the upstream around the world,and almost 10% of it will be invested in Brazil.

Natural gas accounted for 9% of Brazilian energy consumption in 2011, and its share is expected to grow to over 17%. The biggest part of new gas is located in the Santos Basin. In addition, Brazil already counts on three LNG regasification plants and a fourth is ongoing. There is also potential for non-conventional gas on the onshore areas.

In the transport sector,Brazil is a leading producer and consumer of ethanol, an undisputed success story. It is expected that by 2035 biofuels will account for a third of Brazil's total road transport consumption - around 800 tboe/d, and it is believed that the second generation biofuels will expand its consumption even further.

For the 2019 Congress, several technical visits will be offered, including large hydroplants and HDVC transmission lines in the Amazon region, Itaipu Hydroplant near Iguaçú Falls, ethanol producing facilities, nuclear power plants and the Rio de Janeiro Technological Cluster, including Petrobras R&D Center.

World class venue

The city´s main exhibition and convention center, Riocentro, is a world class facility, and meets even the highest expectations in terms of infrastructure and services to ensure success of high-level and large-scale international events. Riocentro is a modern and versatile venue which can host events of all types and sizes with comfort and convenience. It has an area of 571,000 square meters; 100,000 square meters of building area, divided in 5 pavilions.

The Brazilian Oil, Gas and Biofuels Institute – IBP, with decades of experience in the organization of large-scale international events, will be leading the preparatory work on the 2019 World Energy Congress. Among previous events organized by IBP is the 17th World Petroleum Congress (WPC) at Riocentro in 2002. The congress attracted 3.500 delegates from 78 countries, while the exhibition featured 850 stands in the 31,000 square meters net area.

In 2008, IBP organized the 11th IANGV – NGV 2008 Conference and Exhibition, the most important natural gas vehicle event in the world, and recently IBP was selected to organize the IGRC – International Gas Union Research Conference in 2017 and selected to organize the 5th World Petroleum Council Youth Forum, in 2016.

Since 1982, IBP organizesthe Rio Oil & Gas Expo and Conference, currently one of the major oil and gas events in the world. The 2012 edition, also at Riocentro, attracted more than 55.000 visitors from 51 countries. The exhibition featured 1.300 companies from 27 different countries in an area of 37.000 square meters.

It is worth mentioning IBP´s role in engaging youth with the energy industry. Throughout several initiatives, it supports the professional development of skilled new human resources which will be able to face the huge challenges of a fast growing energy industry.

Brazil is already one of the biggest energy producers in the world and it will also become, in a near future, a great oil exporter. Its energy sector is one of the least carbon-intensive in the world and a leader in the use of renewable sources, despite abundant fossil energy resources, mainly oil and natural gas.

The availability of abundant and diverse energy resources ensures that it will be possible to achieve development goals, address growing demand for energy without compromising its export capacity.

In Brazil´s emerging and vibrant economy, energy is, at the same time, an input to industry and other

economic activities as well as an economic and social development tool. Comparatively, Brazil has a rare successful experience dealing with the main challenges faced by other countries – ensuring access to energy to the whole population in a sustainable way while not compromising their energy security. In short, on several fronts the Brazilian energy industries offer investment opportunities towards technological innovation and human resources.

In 2012, the Brazilian domestic energy supply surpassed 286 million toe among which 41.6% of oil, 9.9% natural gas, 13.9% hydropower, 31.9% bioenergy, 0.2% other renewables, 1.5% nuclear and 1.0% coal. These last two play a small role in the Brazilian energy mix, and will continue to do so, although the country has significant uranium estimated reserves, around 309 thousand ton.

The strong expansion of the Flex fuel fleet (that can use ethanol or gasoline) in Brazil, which currently represents 60% of the total light vehicles fleet, ensures a significant potential market for ethanol. The 2013 World Energy Outlook (WEO), an International Energy Agency (IEA) publication, estimates that, by 2035, biofuels will represent 27% of the total energy consumption for transportation in Brazil. There is also an expectation for second generation biofuels expansion, which will demand a great technological effort.

According to the WEO, by 2035 Brazil will discover 106 billion barrels. From this total, 85% comes from deep waters, mainly in the promising pre-salt area on Santos Basin. Oil production, currently 2.2 million barrels a day, will reach 4-4.5 million barrels a day by 2020, and around 6-7 million in 2035.

The IEA also estimates that from the 657 billion dollars in E&P investment around the world, 9% will be invested in Brazil. Almost one in every ten dollars! Also, according to the Agency, from the 160 FPSOs currently in activity around the world, 34 of them are operating in Brazil. This number should rise to 70 by 2020.During this time, to feed this huge demand, the local industries supplying the oil sector will have to double their size, creating an amazing opportunity for investments in Brazil.

Although natural gas plays a small role in the Brazilian primary energy supply today (10%), the IEA projects that its share will increase significantly, reaching 17% in 2035. Most of this potential lies on the Santos Basin, which will require the construction of a complex infrastructure of underwater gas pipelines. In addition, the 12th Bidding Round, held in 2013, offered a few blocks with potential for non-conventional gas production.

As for oil, Brazil currently has 15.6 billion barrelsof proven reserves,of which 75% is locatedon offshore deep waters.

Pre-salt: at the frontier of knowledge

Brazil is currently one of the world's most important oil and gas markets in terms of technological development and new business. One of the most important discoveries of recent decades, the pre-salt area may more than double Brazil's oil and natural gas reserves and account for one third of the increase in domestic oil production.

Petrobras expects to produce 2.75 million bpd and more than 9.4 Bcf per day of natural gas in 2017, with one third coming from pre-salt reservoirs.

Less than seven years after being discovered, this new frontier has already attained a daily production of 300 thousand barrels of oil and 353 MMscf of gas.

Out of the total estimated investments of US$500 billion needed to develop the pre-salt fields, US$ 70 billion will be invested by Petrobras and partner companies in this area in the next four years.

The pre-salt area is mobilizing the production chain in a joint effort to develop new technologies and processes for the exploration and production of oil and gas in deep waters. And the logistical complexity of sending gas offshore that is produced 350 km from the coast is driving investments in innovative projects such as floating LNG plants and offshore thermal generation.

Due to its size and its special features, Brazil's electric power production and transmission system is unique worldwide. With a strong predominance of hydroelectric generation and with multiple owners, the National Interconnected System is formed by companies in the South, Southeast, Midwest, Northeast and the Northern regions. The system disposes of 107,000 kilometers of transmission lines (ranging from 230 kilovolt up to 750 kV). From 2013 to 2022 some 50,000 of new transmission lines are expected to be added to the system. Only 1.7% of the energy required by the country is located outside of the interconnected system, mainly in the Amazon region.

Located between Brazil and Paraguay, Itaipu is the largest hydroelectric power plant of the world in energy generation, with 14,000 MW of installed power.

Brazil is the second main producerof hydroelectricity in the world.

The IEA estimates that by 2035 around 142 GW will be added to the Brazilian power generation system, a way to supply a fast growing rate demand. A total of 70 GW of this new capacity will come from hydropower projects.

However, the big news relies on the wind power generation, a sector in fast expansion. If in 2014 there was an installed capacity of 3.6 GW (distributed in 148 plants) by the end of 2017, Abeólica (Brazilian Association for Wind Power) estimates that 8.7 GW will be in full operation in the Brazilian mix(an average of 2 GW per year).

Famous worldwide for its beauty, Rio de Janeiro, also known as 'Marvelous City' is also considered the main destination of the Americas for scientific and professional events as stated by the International Congress and Convention Association.

Rio hosted world class events such as the United Nations Conference for Sustainable Development - Rio +20 and the Rio 2007 Pan-American Games, as well as the 17th World Petroleum Congress, in 2002, of similar scale to the World Energy Congress.

Brazil is hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup and Rio was chosen as the 2016 Olympic Games city. For this reason, several infrastructure improvements are in progress to receive these events. Several new hotels will be available and the transportation infrastructure is being enhanced, among other improvements that are ongoing.

The main airline companies have regular flights connecting Rio de Janeiro to the most important capitals of the world, and offer varied links to all Brazilian airports.

Rio is also extremely well placed – in Brazil and Latin America – in terms of industrial capacity, besides hosting influential financial institutions and headquarters of the 50 largest Brazilian corporations. The energy, telecommunications, steelworks, cultural and tourism sectors clearly stand out. Brazil´s largest research and development centers are located in Rio, which concentrates about 40% of the nation´s scientific production.

The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro's (UFRJ) Technology Park congregates the advanced RDI and application laboratories of global firms in the oil and gas sector, such as Petrobras, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, FMC Technologies, Halliburton, Tenaris Confab, BG Group, Siemens and General Electric, amongst others.

It also has the UFRJ incubator, start-ups and small and medium firms, all focused on the oil and gas sector.

The Ministry Of Science and Technology (MCT), the National Scientific and Technological Development Council (CNPQ), and the Financier of Studies and Projects (FINEP) are among the technology park's partners.

Rio de Janeiro Technology Park

In recent decades, Brazil has become a leader in ultra-deep water technology, supported by continuous investments in Research, Development and Innovation (R,D&I) in the oil and gas sector.

Rio de Janeiro has the world's largest institution in this area, Petrobras's Leopoldo Américo Miguez de Mello Research and Development Center (Cenpes), located on Fundão Island in Rio de Janeiro's Technology Park , which invests around US$ 1 billion a year on R,D&I.

Using a technological management model - the Thematic Networks and Competency Centers - that congregates more than 100 domestic and foreign universities and research institutions, Petrobras has extended the reach of R,D&I in the oil and gas area.

As host of FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016 Rio de Janeiro has received investments to improve its infrastructure for airports, ports, roads, transport, accommodation, leisure and services.

Rio de Janeiro is served by a wide net of transport means that covers the whole city. In terms of public transport, 2 subway lines with 42 km link various quarters in a fast, comfortable and clean way. The public bus system, with its more than 400 lines and 6,000 vehicles, is also an alternative, along with an extensive fleet of taxis, that guarantees an efficient transport service at comparatively low fares.

Carioca cuisine deserves special mention. A real opportunity to better understand the blend of traditions and cultures that make up Brazil. Traditional Brazilian cuisine has been favorably compared to those of the other great cuisines of the world and offers a similar complexity and diversity of taste and dishes that can be found in more than 800 restaurants around the city.

iocentro Exhibition & Convention CenterRThe Riocentro convention center is receiving investments of US$ 100 million. This will make it a unique venue,

equipped with a full infrastructure for events and business tourism in Rio de Janeiro, renting especially planned spaces, providing full support for events, as well as hosting, parking, helipad and restaurant.

Riocentro has an area of 571,000 square meters. Of this area, 100,000 square meters of built area (5 pavilions) have been designed for a full range of events: product launches, parties, concerts, fairs and congresses to sophisticated corporate events. With air-conditioned pavilions, the convention center offers a full range of catering services and suppliers prepared to ensure convenience and success to all stages of the events.

The investment plan includes the construction of Grand Mercure Riocentro Hotel; renovation of Pavilion 1; construction of the restaurant Emporium Pax Delícia; and a full infrastructure to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ International Broadcast Centre (IBC) and the Local Organizing Committee. The latter has been based in Riocentro since the first half of 2013. From 2006 to 2011, GL events Brasil invested R$ 100 million to upgrade Riocentro.

In addition to hosting the 2014 World Cup facilities, Riocentro will host the 2016 Olympic Games competitions.

Riocentro's first fixed restaurant will have capacity for 350 people and will be based in Pavilion 1, which hosts the FIFA and GL events Brasil offices. The restaurant will be managed by Top Gourmet, Riocentro's catering company, and will have a sushi bar, pizzeria and a corporate restaurant providing buffet and a la carte dining options, as well as a mezzanine and a balcony. This dining spot will serve not only event visitors and participants, but also those who are based around Riocentro, and the FIFA and GL events Brasil staff.

With investments on the order of R$ 100 million, the Grand Mercure Riocentro, a five-star hotel, will have 306 rooms, 550m² of meeting suites, two restaurants - including a rooftop restaurant with panoramic view - swimming pool and Fitness & Spa, the hotel was designed by French architect Jean Michel Wilmotte.

Visitors may arrive by car, using one of the 7,000 parking places; by taxi, using public transport, or by helicopter, landing on Riocentro's exclusive helipad. To make it easier for those who choose public transport, Rio's City Government will build a TransCarioca bus station in front of Riocentro. The BRT TransCarioca rapid bus system will connect the Alvorada terminal in Barra da Tijuca to the Galeão Internacional Airport, in Ilha do Governador, and it is one of the leading road projects for the 2016 Olympics. TransCarioca is expected to reduce by 60% the commuting time between Galeão and Barra.

Elected by the World Travel Awards the Leading Convention Center of South America, in 2012, Riocentro hosted the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). To the United Nations Secretary-General for Rio+20 Sha Zukang, the convention center was the best place for UN meetings where he has been in recent years.

One year later, Riocentro received Pope Francis in a gathering that attracted around 15,000 World Youth Day (WYD) volunteers in a ceremony of acknowledgement for their dedication to the WYD.

The Brazilian Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Institute – IBP, founded 56 years ago, is a private non-profit organization that currently gathers more than 230 associated companies whose mission is to promote the development of a competitive, sustainable, ethical and socially responsible petroleum, gas and biofuels industry.

To develop its traditional activities IBP works with 67 plus comittees that relies on the voluntary participation of more than 1,700 professionals, including executives, specialists of the industry, scientific and academic institutions, governmental bodies and related associations.

IBP is internationally recognized for the performance of world class oil and gas events. In 2002, IBP organized the 17th World Petroleum Congress (WPC), at Riocentro, in Rio de Janeiro. The congress gathered 3,500 delegates from 78 countries, whereas the exhibition showcased 850 stands in a 31,000 square meters net area.

IBP also organizes - since 1982 - the Rio Oil & Gas Expo and Conference, currently one of the top three major oil and events in the world. Last edition, held also at Riocentro in 2012, gathered more than 55,000 visitors from 51 countries, 20% more than its previous edition. The exhibition showcased 1,300 companies from 27 different countries in a net area of 37,000 square meters. The 4-day conference, held simultaneously with the exhibition, received more than 4,000 delegates from 28 countries.

Noteworthy to mention IBP´s role in youth projects. Seeking to build up a generation of human resources to face the huge challenges brought about by a fast growing industry, IBP – as an institution that represents the national oil and gas industry – created in 2002 the Professional of the Future program and has since then been uninterruptedly focusing on the development of university students through their attendance and actual participation in renowned conferences and exhibitions such as Rio Oil & Gas, OTC Brazil and Rio Pipeline.

In 2007 IBP set up a Youth Committee composed of young professionals up to the age of 35, from all sectors of the oil chain. This committee has fostered a series of actions to attract future leaders and support the development of their careers in the oil, gas and biofuels sectors.

echnical VisitsTThe Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s Technology Park congregates the advanced RDI and application

laboratories of global firms in the oil and gas sector, such as Petrobras, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, FMC Technologies, Halliburton, Tenaris Confab, BG Group, Siemens and General Eletric, amongst others.

It also has the UFRJ incubator, start-ups and small and medium firms, all focused on the oil and gas sector.

The Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), the National Scientific and Technological Development Council (CNPQ), and the Financier of Studies and Projects (FINEP) are among the technology park’s partners.

Our Research and Development activities are centralized at the Leopoldo Américo Miguez de Mello Research & Development Center (Cenpes), in Rio de Janeiro. Occupying a total area of 300,000 square meters, it is one of the world's most important applied research complexes. Besides advanced laboratories, it has simulation and process immersion rooms of the energy industry.

Petrobras' Research Center (Cenpes) owns one of the largest and most advanced research facilities in the world. It covers a total area of 300,000 square meters, at University City, in the Northern area of the city of Rio de Janeiro. This complex features 227 advanced laboratories, in addition to experimental plants and an Imaging and Collaboration Center used for simulations, interactivity, and immersion in various energy industry processes. It currently hires 1,897 workers. There are 212 doctors, 377 masters, and 306 college graduates working directly in research and development; 525 technicians providing support to our laboratories and pilot plants; 21 doctors, 93 masters, 183 college graduates, and 12 technicians working in basic engineering, and 168 professionals working in the support areas.

In addition to the Rio de Janeiro facilities, Petrobras relies on six experimental centers located near related business areas. These centers undertake testing on the semi-industrial scale, a critical step for scaling up technology and for its future availability for use by Petrobras.

This staff dedicated to research, development, and engineering activities is but a part of the large network formed by the technological partnerships, which signifi cantly boosts Petrobras' technological development ability.

Petrobras currently has the support of 122 universities and research institutes in Brazil, organized mainly through the thematic networks'- model that fostered increased partnership between Petrobras and brazilian academia.

In 2012, US$ 300 million were invested in Brazilian science and technology universities and institutions, an amount earmarked for R&D projects, technician and researcher training, and to improve laboratory infrastructure. Also worthy of note is the partnership with suppliers, especially in projects related to the pre-salt area.

Eletrobras Eletronuclear – NPPs Angra 1 & 2

Eletrobras Eletronuclearwas established in 1997 with the purpose of operating and building nuclear power plants in the country. Eletrobras subsidiary, is a mixed economy and accounts for the generation of about 3% of the electricity consumed in Brazil. For the interconnected system, this energy reaches the main consumer centers in the country and corresponds, for example, over 50% of the electricity consumed in the state of Rio de Janeiro, that proportion will increase considerably when the completion of the third plant (Angra 3) Central Nuclear Almirante Álvaro Alberto - CNAAA.

At present, nuclear power plants Angra 1 - with a generating capacity of 657 electric megawatts, and Angra 2 - rated at 1350 electric megawatts are in operation. Angra 3, to practically be a replica of Angra 2, (incorporating the technological advances made since the construction of the latter) is also planned to generate 1350 megawatts.

A consequence of the Brazil-Germany nuclear agreement, the construction and operation of Angra 2 occurred in conjunction with the transfer of technology to Brazil. This also led Brazil to a technological development program on its own, culminating in the mastering of practically all steps of nuclear fuel fabrication.

Thus, Eletronuclear and the domestic nuclear industry bring together professionals qualified and tuned to the industry's state-of-the-art. Angra 2 operates with a PWR (pressurized water) type reactor rated at 1350 MW. Angra 2 alone could meet the consumption demand of a metropolitan region the size of Curitiba, with two million inhabitants.

Because it has the largest electric generator in the South Hemisphere, Angra 2's generated power decisively contributes to maintaining the hydro power plants' reservoirs at such levels as not to compromise electricity supply to Brazil's most economically important region, the Southeast.

The first Brazilian nuclear power plant operates with a PWR type (pressurized water) reactor, which is the most widely used in the world today. Since 1985, when it came on line, Angra 1 has been generating electric power sufficient for meeting the demand from such a capital as Vitória or Florianópolis (1millon of inhabitants). This first nuclear power plant was procured on a turn-key basis as part of a package sale including no technology transfer on the part of the vendor.

Still, the experience accumulated by Eletronuclear in all these years of commercial operation, with efficiency indicators surpassing those of many similar plants, leads the company to currently have the ability to carry out a continuous technology improvement program and incorporate the nuclear industry's most recent advances into plants like Angra 1. This enables Angra 1, for example, to make the replacement of two of the Plant's main items of equipment, the steam generators. With this new equipment capability, Angra 1's serviceable life will be extended and the plant will be capable of generating more power for Brazil.


Nuclear power plants are complex facilities but pose no risk if operated in totally safe conditions. That is what happens with Angra plants, where an accident capable of jeopardizing those working at the CNAAA or those living in the surroundings, will hardly occur. After all, Nuclear Safety is a priority and precedes the concern with productivity or economy. For that reason, Eletronuclear is proud of having a strict safety culture, well understood by employees and associates. More than twenty years of nuclear power generation at Angra, there was never an accident or incident that might endanger the plant workers, the population or the environment of the region.

The energy of nuclear origin is today the form of large-scale electricity generation causing the least impact on the environment. Nuclear power plants like Angra's work in relatively small areas, with no gas emissions to warm up the atmosphere, and all of their waste is kept in facilities under permanent monitoring. Such industry was born prior to the Kyoto protocol and is governed by the same principles of respect for the planet.

Eletrobras Eletronorte was established in 1979 with the purpose of operating and building power plants and transmission lines in the Amazon Region, which includes 9 Brazilian states (Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima e Tocantins).

The company operates four hydropower plants, 5 thermal power plants and more than 9.8 thousand kilometer of transmission lines. The most importantis Tucuruí, the fourth largest dam in the world, which has an installed capacity of

8,370 MW.

Tucuruíwas built in two stages: the first powerhouse was completed in December 1992, with 12 generating units of 350 MW, two auxiliary of 22.5 MW and an installed capacity of 4,245 MW; the

second powerhouse, with 11 generating units of 375 MW and the total installed capacity of 4,125 MW, were completed in April 2007.

Located in Amazon Forest, Tucuruí is an example of success in integrating development and sustainability. Beyond producing energy,

it produces wealth, economic development, job opportunities, and income, in addition to providing the conditions for the main

infrastructure projects in the country to become reality.

ItaipuBinacional – HPP Itaipu

Itaipu is a binational undertaking run by Brazil and Paraguay at the Paraná River on the border section between the two countries.

With 20 generator units and 14,000 MW of installed capacity,Itaipu dam is currently the world's largest hydroelectric plant in power generation.ItaipuBinacionalprovides approximately 17% of the energy consumed in Brazil and 75% of consumption in Paraguay. It produced in 2013 a total of98.6 million MWh, breaking its own world record for energy production.

The Itaipu dam is 7,919 meters long (counting the Hernandarias dike) with a maximum height of 196 meters, equivalent to a 65-story building. It consumed 12.3 million cubic meters of concrete, while the iron and steel employed would permit the construction of 380 Eiffel Towers: dimensions that transformed the power plant into a reference with respect to concrete studies and dam safety.

The Itaipu transmission system connects the three substations of the power plant (two gas insulated substations, one of 50 Hz and one of 60 Hz, installed in the Powerhouse, and a conventional 50 Hz substation on the Right Bank) to the respective Paraguayan and Brazilian interconnected systems.

The flow of energy from Itaipu to the Brazilian system, from the Foz do Iguacu substation in Parana, is carried out by Eletrobras Furnas and Copel. The energy at 50Hz uses the Eletrobras Furnas (Elo CC) direct current system and the energy at 60Hz uses the Eletrobras Furnas 765kV system and the Copel 525kV system. The Direct Current Elo has become necessary because the energy produced in the Itaipu 50 Hz sector cannot be integrated directly to the Brazilian system, where the frequency is 60 Hz .

This system takes the energy produced by the Itaipu 60 Hz sector (Brazilian frequency) to the proximity of the center of consumption of southeastern Brazil and although dubbed 750 kV, its transmission voltage is 765 kV. The system consists of three transmission lines between the substations of Foz do Iguaçu and the metropolitan region of São Paulo, each with a length of approximately 900 km.

After lunch, browse through the São Conrado Fashion Mall and admire magnificent Brazilian gemstones at the H. Stern Museum.

Climate Change was signed, Rio+20 and the Rio 2007 Pan-American Games and the 17th World Petroleum Congress.

This year Brazil is hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup and in 2016 Rio will welcome the Olympic Games. Large-scale infrastructure improvement projects are in progress to prepare for these events. Many new hotels will be available and the transport infrastructure will be considerably improved. All major airlines have regular flights to Rio de Janeiro and connections to all Brazilian airports.
