Catchment areas are coloured (screened colour). Derelict canals and thoseconverted into railways are included. Rainfall statistics are given, as are spot heights onwatersheds. Distinguishesmail-coach roads, turnpike roads, principal cross-roads (not turnpike) and other roads, alsonavigable canals. Includes Scotland up to Edinburgh and Glasgow and the eastern fringe of Ireland.Map is packed with detail, some of which is simply wrong: for example, the Caistor Canal has beenextended to Nettleton (notwithstanding the 171ft hill in the way) and the Humber Bridge has beenanticipated by 170 years! Dissected with marbled boards and provided with a slip case. Goodcondition; finding errors offers hours of fun for all the family! (Photo above)

7. John Albin, Isle of Wight, 1:63,360, 1795. Marks the meridian of Portsmouth Academy. Plan of

Newport. Woods and parks are hand-coloured in green. The boundaries of West Medine and EastMedine have been inexpertly coloured and various roads have been marked in. Dissected, in asomewhat decayed slip case.

8. Isaac Taylor, County of Glocester, 2 miles to inch, 1800, with plan of Gloucester. Roads arehand-coloured in brown, parks in green, Hundreds are edged in various colours, and the wholecounty is given a neutral tint. Blank spaces are filled with historical notes in a hand of the 1st halfof the 19th c. - mostly key dates from 577 to 1688, also a list of ?archaeological sites. Some namesof streams have been added. In a different ink, some routes have been marked in. Map wasdissected and sold in a slip case by Faden. Cloth has worn through at corners of panels but map isbasically sound. (Photo above)

9. Greenwood, Pringle & Co, County of Salop, 1:63,360, 1827. Hundreds delicately tinted andoutlined in colour; roads in brown, parks in green. View of Shrewsbury by Creighton with boats onthe river. Dissected with marbled front & back. Some offset visible in white areas of map, butgenerally a nice specimen.

GSGS10. GSGS2555 Asia 1:1M. Sheet North K 36 (Sinob - N central Turkey) 1916. Dissected in SiftonPraed covers.

11. GSGS 2563 Lower Mesopotamia between Baghdad and the Persian Gulf, 1:1M, Nov 1907updated to Aug 1916. Numerous printed annotations, eg at Baghdad 'Ruined mud walls, mostlydestroyed'. Dissected in Stanford book-fold covers.

GSGS2733 NW Europe, 1:250k12. Sheet 1 and part of 4, Revised edition, Feb 1915. Key for roads distinguishes 'main,macadamised' from 'main, paved' (ie pavées). An interesting map: one is struck by theamazing double ring of forts around Antwerp and by the direct railway line from Bruges toBrussels (S) being shown as under construction E of Aalst. This is the sheet that started lifeas GSGS2733b - see Sheetlines 39, p34. Cloth, direct-printed cover.

13. Sheet 3, May 1918. Cloth, direct-printed cover; George Philip sticker inside. This is awestward extension of GSGS2733 across GSGS2738 territory, being aligned with the other2733 sheets and drawn in the same style, except that the 'main, paved' symbol hasdisappeared all main roads being described (implausibly) as macadamised.

GSGS2738 France 1:250k14. Sheet 1a, 1914. The early version based on the French Type 1880. E Kent is shown butin outline only. Cloth, direct-printed cover bearing an official stamp dated 23.1.18.

15. Sheet 1A, September 1917. This is the version John Cruickshank describes (Sheetlines39, p34) where he notes that it includes England S & E of London, specially drawn at1:250k. More important for its intended users, it has been redrawn in the style ofGSGS2733 (except that the pavé symbol has been dropped (presumably the information wasnot available); the sheetlines are aligned with those of 2733. The style used for the Englishdetail is based on that used in France but the detail is not so fine.

This is a most unusual sheet in that, apart from a small area southof Salau (Ariège) the map is of Spain, with relief drawn in a manner much more appropriateto the scale than in France. Depiction of settlements and roads in Spain bears norelationship to the map's key and appears to be taken from a map at a scale of 1:250k orsmaller. Dissected in Stanford covers.

97. J&C Walker, The Indian Atlas, 1:253,440 Sheets 62 (1829) and 63 (1840), covering the areafrom Cochin down to India's southern tip at Cape Comorin. Engraved, with relief shown byhachures. Boundaries of states colour-washed; internal administrative boundaries are coloured morefinely. The sheets, 40"x26", are dissected, with sewn borders, and come in a half-morocco folder.

Described at the time as "the greatest geographical work ever undertaken". Good condition. Abound set of 24 maps, mostly of 1827-30, was estimated to fetch £700-1000 at auction in 2006.
