    TECHNICAL INFORMATION

    DELTAPROFESSIONAL

EI 3200/36, HIGH SPEED, BLACK AND WHITE PROFESSIONAL FILMFOR SUPERB PRINT QUALITY

SPECTRAL SENSITIVITYLFORD DELTA 3200 PROFESSIONAL is a highspeed, black and white professional film formaking quality photographs in difficult exposingconditions. It is ideal for action and available light

photography. It is designed to be exposed at

    Wedge spectrogram to tungsten light(2850K)

EI 3200/36 and given extended development.Recommended developers are ILFORD ILFOTECDD-X, ILFORD MICROPHEN and ILFORD ID-11.

    Sensitivity

DELTA 3200 Professional 35mm film is coated on0.125mm/5-mil acetate base and is available in36 exposure cassettes. DELTA 3200 Professional

Wavelength nm35mm film is supplied in DX coded cassettes, suitable for all 35mm cameras.

HANDLINGDELTA 3200 Professional is a very fast film.Always load and unload the camera in subduedlight. At airports, request visual inspection of this

film, and carry the film in hand luggage.

DELTA 3200 Professional rollfilm is coated on0.125mm/5-mil acetate base. It is available in120 lengths and is edge numbered 1 to 19.

    EXPOSURE RATING

FILTER FACTORSThe recommended meter setting for DELTA 3200DELTA 3200 Professional film may be used with alltypes of filters (eg colour, polarising and neutraldensity filters) in the usual way. Follow theinstructions given by the filter manufacturer.

Professional is EI 3200/36, but good imagequality can also be obtained at meter settings fromEI 400/27 to EI 6400/39. It can be used in all types of lighting.

The exposure increase in daylight may vary withthe angle of the sun and the time of day. In the

DELTA 3200 Professional is particularlyrecommended for exposing in the range

late afternoon or the winter months, when daylightcontains more red light, green and blue filters mayneed slightly more exposure than usual.

EI 1600/33 to EI 6400/39. It can be exposed atratings up to EI 25000/45, but it is important tomake test exposures first to ensure the results will

be suitable for the intended purpose. Cameras with through-the-lens metering will usuallyadjust the exposure automatically when usingDELTA 3200 Professional has an ISO speed rating

of ISO 1000/31 (1000ASA, 31DIN) to daylight. The ISO speed rating was measured using ILFORDID-11 developer at 20C/68F with intermittentagitation in a spiral tank.

filters. With some automatic exposure cameras, the correction given for deep red and orangefilters can produce negatives under exposed by asmuch as 11/2 stops.

It should be noted that the exposure index (EI)range recommended for DELTA 3200 Professionalis based on a practical evaluation of film speedand is not based on foot speed, as is the ISOstandard.

MAKING LONG EXPOSURESFor exposures between 1/2 and 1/10 000 second, noadjustments are needed for reciprocity law failure. When exposures longer than 1/2 second are given,DELTA 3200 Professional, along with other films, needs to be given more exposure than indicated

by a meter. Use the graph to calculate theincreased exposure time which should be givenonce the measured time is known.

CHOOSING THE BEST ILFORDDEVELOPER FOR THE JOBDELTA 3200 Professional will give good results ina wide range of developers when exposed atmeter settings up to EI 6400/39. At higher speedratings, ILFOTEC DD-X and MICROPHEN

DEVELOPMENT TIMESThe table gives development times for both manualand machine processing DELTA 3200 Professional. The development times are based on picturetesting and are intended as a guide; they shouldbe altered if a different result is needed.

For manual processing in spiral tanks and deeptanks, the development times are based onintermittent agitation. Where continuous agitation isused for manual processing (as in a dish/tray orwith some types of developing tank), reduce thesetimes by up to 15%. For use in rotary processorswithout a pre-rinse, reduce the spiral tankdevelopment times by up to 15%. A pre-rinse is notrecommended as it can lead to uneven processing.

Note Development times may need adjusting tosuit individual processing systems and workingpractices. If an established system is producinggood results, adjust the recommendeddevelopment times until the desired contrast level isobtained. For more contrasty negatives, try the

development times for the meter setting above theone used.

Note Development times in other manufacturersdevelopers are included for your convenience, and are only a general guide. Othermanufacturers can and do change their productspecifications from time to time, and thedevelopment times may change as a result.

METER SETTINGS OF EI 12500/42AND ABOVEWhen using meter settings of EI 12500/42 andabove, it is important to make test exposures firstto ensure the results will be suitable for theintended purpose. A guide to development times

for meter setting EI 12500/42 is given in thedevelopment times tables. For exposures atEI 25000/45, use the guide in the followingtable.

Stop, fix, wash and rinseFor best results it is recommended that all processsolutions are kept at the same temperature or atleast within 5C (9F) of the developertemperature.

Stop BathAfter development the film can be rinsed in waterbut we recommend that an acid stop bath is usedsuch as ILFORD ILFOSTOP (with indicator dye) orILFOSTOP PRO (without indicator dye). ILFOSTOPPRO is recommended for all machine processingapplications. When tanks or dishes (trays) ofprocess solutions are in use a stop bathimmediately stops development and reduces carryover of excess developer into the fixer bath. Thishelps to maintain the activity and prolong the lifeof the fixer solution.

PROCESSINGDELTA 3200 Professional can be processed in alltypes of processing equipment including spiraltanks, rotary processors, dishes/trays, deep tanksand automatic processors. Standard capacityfigures and replenishment rates can bemaintained. When fixing DELTA 3200

HandlingDELTA 3200 Professional must not be handledunder any safelighting. Handle the film in totaldarkness.

AgitationIntermittent agitation is recommended for use inspiral tanks and deep tanks. With spiral tanks, invert the tank four times during the first 10seconds, then invert the tank four times againduring the first 10 seconds of each further minute.Otherwise, follow the recommendations given bythe processing equipment manufacturer.

The process time given is the minimum required, if

necessary a longer time may be used and shouldnot cause any process problems provided it is notexcessive.

FixThe recommended fixers are ILFORD RAPID FIXERand ILFORD HYPAM liquid fixers and ILFORDILFOFIX II powder fixer, all are non-hardeningfixers.

the risk of physical damage a fixer hardener maybe needed when using a roller transport filmprocessor.

    DELTA 3200 PROFESSIONAL

WASHWhen a non-hardening fixer has been used washthe films in running water for 510 minutes at atemperature within 5C (9F) of the processtemperature.

For spiral tank use, when a non-hardening fixerhas been used, the following method of washing isrecommended. This method of washing is faster, uses less water yet still gives negatives suitable forlong term storage.

After fixing, fill the spiral tank with water at thesame temperature, +/ 5C (9F), as theprocessing solutions and invert it five times. Drainthe water away and refill. Invert the tank ten times.Once more drain the water away and refill. Finally, invert the tank twenty times and drain thewater away.

RinseFor a final rinse use ILFORD ILFOTOL wettingagent added to water, it helps the film to dryrapidly and evenly. Start by using 5ml per litre ofrinse water (1+200), however the amount ofILFOTOL used may need some adjustmentdepending on the local water quality and dryingmethod. Too little or too much wetting agent canlead to uneven drying. Remove excess rinsesolution from the film before drying.

FIX HARDENERILFORD RAPID FIXER and ILFORD ILFOFIX II must

not be used with fix hardeners as they are notcompatible with them. If a fix hardener is requiredthen only ILFORD HYPAM fixer can be used. AddILFORD HYPAM HARDENER to turn HYPAM into ahardening fixer.

Generally for most applications modern camerafilms are sufficiently hardened at manufacture.Additional hardening from a fixer hardener is notusually needed or recommended for processing inspiral tanks, dishes/trays, deep tanks, rotaryprocessors, dip and dunk (hanger) machines andshort leader card processors, unless the processingtemperature is above 30C (86F), or poor dryingperformance is being experienced. To minimise

Using a fix hardener will require therecommended fix and wash times to be extended.Depending on the film and processing conditionsthe hardened fix time will be between 4 and 10minutes and the subsequent wash time 1020minutes in running water.

The amount of HYPAM HARDENER that can be

added to the fixer is dependant on the film andprocess conditions used. In some processors thefull amount of hardener cannot be used as the fixand wash times cannot be extended adequately. In these circumstances we recommend starting with

the minimum amount of hardener to have someeffect. This is around 36 mls of hardener per litreof working strength HYPAM used. This increasesthe film hardness slightly but has a negligibleeffect on the fix and wash efficiency. When fixand wash times are restricted the maximum

amount of HYPAM HARDENER recommended is1020ml of hardener per litre of working strengthHYPAM used. This higher amount gives a definiteincrease to the hardness of the films processedand while fixing and washing efficiency arereduced the films will be adequately fixed andwashed for most purposes.

When fix and wash times can be extended themaximum amount of HYPAM HARDENER neededto achieve fully hardened films is 1 part to 40parts working strength HYPAM i.e. 24 ml per litre.

DryingTo avoid drying marks, use a clean squeegee orchamois cloth to wipe DELTA 3200 Professionalfilm before hanging it to dry. Dry DELTA 3200Professional at 3040C/86104F in a dryingcabinet or at room temperature in a clean dust-freearea.

STORAGEStore DELTA 3200 Professional in a cool (1020C/5068F), dry place in its originalpackaging.

    Exposed film

Once exposed, process DELTA 3200 Professional assoon as practical. Images on exposed butunprocessed film will not degrade for severalmonths when stored as recommended.

NegativesStore processed negatives in a cool (1020C/5068F), dry place, in the dark.Suitable storage sleeves include those made ofcellulose triacetate, Mylar or paper (pH6.57.5)or inert polyester.
