Participants will fill out a standard job application form. Introduction to Content In today’s society, many employment processes begin with filling out an application for a job. As a young person, it is crucial to remember your important personal information and be able to fill out both paper and online applications, create formal cover letters, and utilize templates to build a basic resume of your skills and experience. Most employers use online job applications to begin the employment process. In addition, most companies that use online applications ask you questions as part of the process. For example, you may have to click the “agreement to perform a background check and drug test” boxes with your cursor before the system will allow you to proceed to typing in job history information. Also, some companies may have behavioral assessment quizzes/surveys for you to fill out before you actually reach the job history input screen. You may search the Internet for “behavioral based interviews and questions” to get a sample list of things they might ask you. Background Information Written communication, online technology and the Internet have changed the way employers conduct their hiring processes. Getting a job in today’s world can be very competitive and seem very impersonal. A hand delivered cover letter and resume to begin the employment process is mostly a thing of the past. Whether the job is a part-time hourly position or a full time salaried position, individuals must find ways to differentiate themselves from the rest of the job applicant pool. Resumes, accurate applications and catchy cover letters are ways to do that in our technology savvy world.

Procedure (continued)Take a look at the online application template we included to see what kind of personal information employers are asking you to provide, have your resume handy to help fill in the blanks. Make sure you have your reference information ready to go. When you apply for a job, and someone has consented to provide a reference for you; make sure you call them to let them know that you have applied for a particular job with a particular company. This lets them know they may be receiving a call on your behalf and gives your reference person a chance to collect their thoughts and comments to communicate to your prospective employer. Use the job application template (pp. 54&55 and pp.49&50 from “Build Your Future” National 4HCCS Curriculum)
