Law Enforcement

All Law enforcement agencies are under the Executive Branch of city, county, state or federal government.

Department of Justice (DOJ): Enforces Federal Law and oversees all federal law enforcement agencies except the CIA and Secret Service.The Attorney General is the head of the DOJ & part of the

President’s cabinet

Federal Agencies

Purpose of federal agencies: each has specialized skills which can help to enforce laws. Ex: the DEA (drug enforcement administration)

has agents specialized in preventing drug trafficking.

Other Law Officials:

Magistrate: In criminal cases determines if further action is warranted when a police officer or a citizen claims that a crime has been committed. Also issue court orders, arrest warrents, etc.

National Guard: reserve militaries in each state that are called to federal service. Can serve in the US or abroad. The Governor in each state in the head of their national guard.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI):

Function: investigates all federal crimes in the USExamples: crimes crossing state lines, investigating terrorist

threats within the US, bank robberies, crimes on military bases

The FBI’s investigative authority is the broadest of all federal law enforcement agencies. The FBI has divided its investigations into a number of programs, such as domestic and international terrorism, foreign counterintelligence, cyber, public corruption, civil rights, organized crime/drugs, white-collar crime, violent crimes and major offenders, and applicant matters. The FBI’s investigative philosophy emphasizes close relations and information sharing with other federal, state, local, and international law enforcement and intelligence agencies. A significant number of FBI investigations are conducted in concert with other law enforcement agencies or as part of joint task forces.

National Security

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA): Jurisdiction: FederalFunction: responsible for the USA’s national security.

Investigates international threats.Ex: gets information on terrorists in other countries

Secret Service: Jurisdiction: FederalFunction: Protects the Pres. & VP. Investigates $$

investigations. Ex: investigating a string of bank robberies across the state or

computer crimes against children.
