• A compound is a pure substance made up of two or more elements in which the elements are chemically combined

Chemical Bond = the attraction that holds atoms together

Why do atoms bond?

Atoms bond in order to become stable (fill their outer shell)

Octet Rule

• All atoms want to become super stable, awesome, Noble gasses!

• In other words, all atoms want 8 valence electrons.

Ionic Bonds

• Sodium has one valence electron it wants to lose• Chlorine has 7 valence electrons, so it wants to

gain one more to make it to eight.

• The Sodium atom donates its one valence electron to Chlorine.

Ionic Bonds

• Now, both atoms have a full outer electron cloud.• Na is now positively charged = cation (+1 because it now

has 1 more PROTON than electrons)• Cl is now negatively charged = anion (-1 because it now

has 1 more ELECTRON than protons)• The 2 atoms are held together by the electrostatic

attractions (think of magnets!)

Ionic Bonds

• Sodium and Chloride are now ionically bonded to form a new compound known as sodium chloride (NaCl).

• This is known to most of us as Table Salt.
