What Are the Children Learning?

This objective further familiarizes children with JiJi, the software mascot and exposes them to early foundations of geometry. Children will:

y Identify and describe simple two-dimensional shapes

y Compare and match two-dimensional shapes

y Combine different shapes to create a complete picture

y Identify positions of objects in relation to another in space, such as above/below and in front/in back

Key Vocabulary: JiJi, penguin, match, fit, shape, side, corner, different, same

Objective 2: Getting to Know JiJiEstimated Time: 1 week

* Activity pages are to be copied and sent home with children to complete with their parents.

JiJi to the Top Objective: Getting to Know JiJi

LANGUAGEINTEGRATION

Objectives:

9 Children will further develop a bond with JiJi by acting as friends who clear JiJi’s path.

9 Children will be introduced to basic math concepts, such as geometry, number sense, and spatial positions.

Instructions:

y Before reading aloud, introduce JiJi to the children as a special penguin who will learn math with them.Discuss facts about penguins, such as their living environments, their colors, how they walk, the number ofeyes and feet they have, etc.

y Explain that JiJi needs the children’s help in order to cross the screen. Each time they see JiJi crossing, itmeans that they have successfully solved the puzzle.

y When reading the story, invite children to act out how the children characters in the book help remove theobstacles in JiJi’s way.

y Revisit this story when number sense, geometry and spatial positions concepts are being covered in class.

JiJi Outline Mat

Mat A (Front)1. Before putting puzzles together, remind children that

this is JiJi, whom they met in the JiJi to the Topstory.

2. Help children notice that JiJi has two eyes, a beak, two wings, a body, and two feet.

3. Give children JiJi cutout pieces, and ask them tomatch these cutouts to their mat.

Mat A (Back)1. After children successfully build the puzzle by

matching the pieces to the full color side of the mat, remove puzzle pieces and turn their mats over.

2. Ask children to build the puzzle by placing theJiJi cutouts into the outline.

JiJi Mat

Objectives:

9 Children will familiarize themselves with JiJi.

9 Children will build JiJi by matching the JiJi puzzle parts to the mats.

Common Core Domain:

9 Geometry

Vocabulary: JiJi, penguin, match, fit

Learning Setting: Small group time

Materials Provided:

y Cutout A

y Mat A (Front and Back)

Materials Needed:

y Scissors

Preparation:

Cut out complete sets of JiJi pieces and store each set in a ziplock bag.

Open-ended questions: y How do you know this piece goes here?

y Tell me about the piece you just put down.

y Why doesn’t this piece go here?

Activity & Game: Build JiJi

Game Objective:Children will combine different parts of JiJi to create a complete picture of JiJi.

Game Description: JiJi is shown on the screen with JiJi’s missing body part. In order to complete JiJi, children are asked to click on the part that is currently missing on JiJi. Difficulty increases as the number of missing body parts increases. The last level requires children to put JiJi together when all of the parts are missing.

Number of Levels: 3

Common Core Domain: y Geometry

Common Core Standards: y K.G.6 Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes.

1. Give each child a Mat B. The mat has two sides. Oneside has shapes with different colors, which correspondto the pattern blocks, while the other side of themat only shows black “silhouettes” of shapes. Directchildren to the side with colored shapes first.

2. Next, distribute the pattern blocks in the middle of thetable such that the blocks are reachable for all children.

3. Ask children to explore the pattern blocks to find thosethat are the same as the shapes on the mat. At thispoint, they might use colors to help distinguishthe shapes.

4. Guide children with open-ended questions. Refer toOpen-ended questions section.

5. Although color will be evident, eventually it isimportant to focus on just the shape. Ask childrento turn over the mat. This side of the mat will onlyshow the black “silhouettes”. Encourage childrento notice differences of the shapes other than colorsuch as the sides (edges) and corners (vertices).Instruct children to find the block that matches eachshape “silhouette” on the mat. Continue askingopen-ended questions provided for this activity.

Objectives: Children will match tangible geometric shapes with the shapes printed on a mat.

Common Core Domain: 9 Geometry

Vocabulary: Shape, corners, sides, match, different, same

Learning Setting: Small group time

Materials Provided:

y Mat B (Front and Back)

Materials Needed:

y Pattern blocks

y Sheet protectors

Preparation: Insert Mat B into sheet protectors.

Cut various paper shapes out of the same colored paper (one color) – then match to the mat. Vary the size of the shapes, so a circle or a square can be small, medium or big in size. In addition, cut out a few types of triangles such as equilateral or isosceles triangle. In this activity, children will need to notice only the shape attribute. The same open-ended questions can be used to allow children to verbalize their thinking or thought process.

Extension:

Find the ShapesObjective: Getting to Know JiJi

ACTIVITY

Open-ended questions: y Can you tell me about the shape you are holding?

y How do you know these two shapes match?

y Can you find another shape just like it?

y What is different about this shape, than that shape?

y What part of these two different shapes look the same?

Activity & Game: Match Shape

Game Objective:Children will develop the ability to recognize and compare shapes, colors and positions of objects in space (in front, behind, above, below).

Game Description: Children are asked to determine which shape is blocking JiJi from moving forward and to remove it from the platform by selecting the appropriate shape pulley at the top of the screen. In easier levels, only one shape is in front of JiJi and the difficulty progresses to multiple shapes in front of JiJi. The children will need to identify the shape in front and on the same platform as JiJi and find its match.

Number of Levels: 4

Common Core Domain: y Geometry

Common Core Standards: y K.G.1 Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these

objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.
