Introduction

AGuidetoObedienceThisBiblestudyseriesisdesignedasAGuidetoObedience .ObediencetoeverythingJesus

hascommandisthecoreprinciplefoundedontheGreatCommission.Itusesstoryingas

theprimarymeansofteachingforobediencetoJesuscommandsratherthanafocusonbiblicalknowledge.

Storyingasaformatwasfirstusedbymissionariesworkingamongisolatedpeoplewithno

writtenlanguage.AchronologicalpresentationoftheeventsintheBibleisoftenusedwith

apeoplegroupthathasnopreviousexposuretotheBible.Itmaybehelpful,evennecessary,touseachronologicalpresentationinmanycontexts.

Thisseriesofstudieswaswrittenandusedwithaspecificgroupofpeople,aBibleFellowshipGroup(BFG)1atFirstBaptistChurchofCumming,Georgia.Everymemberofthe

groupwasliteratetohighlyliterate,includingmanywithcollegedegreesandsomewith

postgraduatedegrees.Storyingwasusedastheprimaryformat.Dialoguewasfacilitatedaftereachstorytoallowtheparticipantstoprocessthecontentandinternalizethetruths

theywouldapplyintheirownlives.

Itwillbenecessaryforanyonewhousesthisseriestoadaptthecontenttothegroupthey

aredisciplingevenifthegroupissimilarineducationalbackgroundandchurchexperience.Theselectionofstoriesisspecifictotheneedsandprogressofthegroupmembers.Each

groupwillbeuniqueandtheBiblestoriesusedwillrequireadaptation.

Formulatingthequestionsforagroupisalsounique.Theobjectiveisthattheparticipants

liveoutthecommandsofJesus.Thiswillrequireaconsciousefforttonotfocusontheknowledgetobegainedandmaintainafocusonobedience.Thekeytodisciplemakingis

thequestionsaskedandtheresultingdialog.Questionsallowparticipantstointeractwiththeconceptandinternalizethemeaningleadtogrowthinobedience.

ObeyGodsWordObedienceisthefoundationforeveryfollowerofChrist.Knowledgehasitsplace,buta

priorityisplacedonobedience.AdiscipleofChristissimplyafollowerofJesusthatseeks

tolivebytheteachingsofJesus.

WhenaskedwhichisthegreatestcommandmentJesusrespondswiththegreatestandthesecondgreatest:

Teacher,whichisthegreatestcommandmentintheLaw?Jesusreplied:Lovethe

LordyourGodwithallyourheartandwithallyoursoulandwithallyourmind.Thisisthefirstandgreatestcommandment.Andthesecondislikeit:Loveyour

neighborasyourself.AlltheLawandtheProphetshangonthesetwo

commandments.Matthew22:36-40

JesusalsoexplainshowtoloveGod.Thesimpleanswerisobedience.Wedemonstrateour

lovetoGodwhenweobeyJesusteachings.Jesusreplied,Anyonewholovesmewillobeymyteaching.MyFatherwilllove

them,andwewillcometothemandmakeourhomewiththem.John14:23

InmanyChristiancircles,discipleshiphasbecomesynonymouswithteachingandknowing

theBible.MostBiblestudyordiscipleshipmaterialsfocusonbiblicalknowledgeratherthanhowtoobeywhattheBibleisteaching.Thedifferenceisnotdifficulttograsp;but

makingthementalshiftmaybehardforthosewithalonghistoryofknowledgefocusedBiblestudyanddiscipleshipstudies.

AfollowerofJesusthatseekstolivebytheteachingsofJesuswillsoonerorlatercomefacetofacewithwhatiscalledTheGreatCommission.Matthewrecordedthesefinalwordsof

Jesus.Thiscommission,giventohisfollowersbyJesushimself,servesastheguidetoeveryonewhoseekstobecomeafaithfulfollowerJesus.

Thereforegoandmakedisciplesofallnations,baptizingtheminthenameofthe

FatherandoftheSonandoftheHolySpirit,andteachingthemtoobeyeverythingIhavecommandedyou.AndsurelyIamwithyoualways,totheveryendoftheage.

Matthew28:19-20

Jesusclearlystateshowwearetomakedisciples.Hetellshisfollowerstofocuson

teachingthemtoobeyeverythinghehascommanded.TheGreatCommissionisaboutreachingthepeoplesoftheworldwiththegospelmessage.Itisacommissiontobaptize

them,whichisanimportantfirststepofobedience.However,manywellintention

Christianshavefocusedonmakingdisciplesbybaptizingthemandhavefailedtoteachthemtoobey.

Obediencemustbeapassionatepursuit

Learningtoobeyisnotacasualpursuit.Itshouldbethemotivethatdrivesourevery

encounterwiththeBible.ThereisnoplaceforacasualapproachtotheBibleinthelifeofonewhodesirestoobeyeveryteachingofJesus.Obediencemustbeapassionatepursuit

thatdefinesouractionsinresponsetotheteachingsofJesusrecordedintheBible.ThroughobediencewelivewithJesusasthemasterofourlives.TheBiblebecomestheguidethatfocusesouractionsonobediencetohisteachings.

Davidisanexampletoeveryonewithapassionforobedience.HeexpresseshisheartsdesiretoknowandobeythecommandsofGod.Hewrotethe176versesofPsalm119asa

beautifulexpressionofthispursuit.Psalm119:33-34isanexcerptfromthispoemandexpressesthisdesire:

Teachme,LORD,thewayofyourdecrees,thatImayfollowittotheend.Giveme

understanding,sothatImaykeepyourlawandobeyitwithallmyheart.

AdeepdesiretoobeyGodrunscontrarytothedominantthemeofourwesternculture.Instead,oursocietyisdefinedbethepursuitofindividualrights.ItisexpressedinmusicasIdiditmyway.Itisevidentwhenawomanfacesthenightmareofseeinganotherwoman

wearingtheverysamedressataparty.Alongrunningadvertisementforfastfoodpromisesthateachcustomercanhaveityourway.Thiscomponentofourworldview

subconsciouslydrivesourresistancetoconformityandultimatelydrivesusawayfrom

willingobedience.

ThisfocusontheindividualandtheirindividualrightsstandsinstarkcontrasttothesubmissiontoobeytheteachingsofJesus.Theresultisoftenanattitudethattherules

applytoeveryoneelse.Individualrightsandprivilegebecomeanenemyofobedience.

ManyChristiansfollowthenormsofoursocietyandobeytrafficlaws,suchasspeedlimits,

onlywhenandwheretheyareenforced.Thisisacoercedobedienceanddoesnot

demonstratethetypeofwillingobedienceJesusreferstointheGreatCommission.

DavidexpressedhisdesiretoknowGodslaw,ways,word,commands,statutes,decrees,teachings,anddeedsinPsalm119.HerepeatsthisthemethroughoutthisPsalm.Itis

evidentthatobedienceispursuednotimposed.Thepassionatepursuittoobeyeverything

Jesushascommandedisthegoalofhisfaithfulfollowers.

Obedienceisalearningprocess

Jesususedthephraseteachingthemtoobeyeverythingtodescribetheactionoflearning.

Theideaisnotsomethingthatiscompletedinasinglestepandnoteveninafewsteps.Itisalifetimepursuit.

LearningtoobeyeverythingI[Jesus]havecommandeddefinesthescopeofthetask.Itrepresentsanenormousbodyofinformationthatistobelearned,andaboveall,obeyed.It

becomesanunattainablegoalofperfectionandlittleseriouseffortisgiventoalifeof

steadyadvanceinlearningtoobeyallthatJesuscommands.

SomewillrationalizethattolivelikeJesus,respondingtoeverylifesituationashewould,isunrealisticandmissthepoint.Theyfailtofocusontheobjective,togrowandmaturein

obedience.ObedienceisnotBiblestudy

StudyingtheBiblehasbeenapartofeveryphaseofmylife.IbegantostudytheBibleasachildinSundaySchoolandIinvestedmanyhoursasaseminarystudent.Ihavelearnedand

practicedthedisciplineofpersonalBiblestudy.However,anhonestreviewofmyliferevealsthatmuchofmyBiblestudyincreasedmyknowledgeabouttheBiblebutseldom

resultedinmyobediencetothethingsthatJesushascommandedmetodo.

TheBibleisveryclear,evenblunt,instatingthatstudyingtheBibleisnotadequateand

thatobedienceistheaim.InJames1:22,theBiblesays:Donotmerelylistentotheword,andsodeceiveyourselves.Dowhatitsays.ToooftenwelistentotheBibleasitistaught,evenmemorizeit,withoutanythoughtastohowtoliveouttheprinciplesinourdailylives.

Dr.RobertJolly,SeniorPastorattheFirstBaptistChurchinCumming,Georgia,illustrated

thisconceptashepreachedasermonseriesinlate2010underthetitle:FBC1*3*5*1.

ThesenumbersareashorthandwayofstatingthatFBCCumminghasonevision,threecore

values,fivepurposesandoneattitude.

Thisseriesformedpartofthecelebrationof

thechurchs175thanniversary.Thepastorchallengedthechurchinallfourareas.These

conceptswerenotnewtothechurch.They

werearecastingofthevisionandareviewofthevalues,purposesandattitudeofthechurch.

Ashereviewedthefivepurposes,hereminded

thechurchthattheoriginalversionstatedthe

thirdofthefivepurposesasTeachGodsWord.Heexplainedthatthestaffandleaders

ofthechurchwereconvincedandconvicted

thatthepurposewasnottoteachtheBible;itistoobeytheBible.Therefore,thethirdpurposeistoObeyGodsWord.Hewascarefulto

articulatethatteachingandstudyingtheBibleisnotwrong;itisnecessary.Itissimplynotenough.FaithfulnesstotheGreatCommissionrequiresobedienceanddeservespriority

Obedienceisfaithinaction.James2:17states;Inthesameway,faithbyitself,ifitisnot

accompaniedbyaction,isdead.OnemightrightlysaythatitisimpossibletoreallyknowJesuswithoutobeyinghisteachings.

ThepersonwhoclaimstohavearelationshipwithJesusandyetfailstostrivetoknowandobeyhisteachingshasonlyanintellectualunderstandingofJesusanddoesnothaveafaith

relationshipwithhim.Justasfaithwithoutactionisnogoodtous,knowingJesuswithout

obeyinghisteachingsisoflittlevalue.ObedienceputsonesfaithintoactionthroughintentionallylivinglifeaccordingtotheteachingsofJesus.

ObedienceisBetterThanSacrificeBackground:

ThereisanimportanteventinthehistoryoftheIsraelitesthatrelatestotheeventsinthis

story.TheAmalekitesattackedtheIsraelitesinthewildernesswhiletheyweretravelingfromEgypttothePromisedLand(Exodus17).

ThentheLORDsaidtoMoses,WritethisonascrollassomethingtoberememberedandmakesurethatJoshuahearsit,becauseIwillcompletelyblotout

thenameofAmalekfromunderheaven.(Exodus17:14NIV)

Manyyearslater,aftertheIsraeliteshadsettledinCanaan,thePromisedLand,the

Israeliteswantedtohaveakingliketheotherpeoplearoundthem.SamuelwasGods

prophetorspokesman.SamuelrevealedthatGodhadchosenSaultobethefirstkingovertheIsraelitepeople.

Priortotheeventsintodaysstory,SaulhadbecomeimpatientwithSamuelwhohadnotyetarrived.SaulofferedtheburntofferingtoGod.

Youhavedoneafoolishthing,Samuelsaid.YouhavenotkeptthecommandtheLordyourGodgaveyou;ifyouhad,hewouldhaveestablishedyourkingdomover

Israelforalltime.Butnowyourkingdomwillnotendure;theLordhassoughtouta

manafterhisownheartandappointedhimrulerofhispeople,becauseyouhavenotkepttheLordscommand.(1Samuel13:13-14NIV)

SamuelisreferringtoDavidwhowouldbeanointedkinginSaulsplace.(1Samuel16)HealsopointstothefactthatGodhadrejectedSaul.

StoryfromtheBible:1Samuel15:1-35

ObedienceisBetterThanSacrifice

SamueldeliveredamessagefromGodtoSaul.Samuelsaid:ThisiswhattheAlmighty

says.SothereisnodoubtinSaulsmindaboutwherethismessagecamefrom.

GodtoldSaulthathewouldpunishtheAmalekitesforwhattheyhaddonetotheIsraelites

whentheywerecomingupfromEgypt.SaulwastoldtoattacktheAmalekitesandtotallydestroythem.GodmadeitveryclearbytellingSaultokilleveryoneoftheAmalekites.He

toldhimtoputtodeatheveryman,womanandchild;alloftheircattleandsheep,camelsanddonkeys.

SaulcalledtogetherthemenofIsrael.Thereweretwothousandfootsoldiers.SaulledthemtothecityofAmalekandsetanambushintheravine.HetoldtheKenites,wholivedinthe

samearea,thattheywerefreetoleavebecausetheyhadshownkindnesstotheIsraelites

whentheycameupoutofEgyptandhadnotdoneastheAmalekiteshaddone.SothentheKenitesmovedaway.

ThenSaulandhismenattackedtheAmalekites.HetookAgag,thekingoftheAmalekites,

prisonerandkilledeveryoneelse.Saulalsosparedthebestoftheircattle,sheep,calvesandlambs.HesparedallthebestthattheAmalekiteshad.Hewasunwillingtodestroy

everythingasGodhadcommanded.

SamuelheardfromGod.Godsaid,IregretthatIhavemadeSaulking,becausehehasturnedawayfrommeandhasnotcarriedoutmyinstructions.SamuelwasangrybecauseofwhatGodtoldhim.

EarlythenextmorningSamuelgotupandwenttomeetSaulbuthemissedhimbecauseSaulhadgonetoCarmel.SamuelwastoldthatSaulsetupamonumenttohonorhimself

andhadgoneondowntoGilgal.

FinallySamuelcaughtupwithSaul.Whentheymet,Saulsaid,TheLordblessyou!Ihave

carriedouttheLordsinstructions.SamuelknewthatSaulwaslyingandheaskedhimaboutthebleatingofsheepandthesoundofcattlehecouldhear.Saulsaidthatthesoldiers

hadbroughtthembackfromthebattlewiththeAmalekites;thattheyhadsparedthebesttobeasacrificetoGodandhaddestroyedtherest.

Samuelhadheardenough.HesaidtoSaul,LetmetellyouwhatGodsaidtomelastnight.

Saulresponded,Tellme.

SamueltoldSaulthatalthoughhehadonceseenhimselfassmallinhisowneyes,he

becametheheadofallthetribesofIsraelbecauseGodhadanointedhimkingoverIsrael.However,whenGodsenthimonamissiontogoandcompletelydestroytheAmalekites,he

didnotobey.SamuelaskedhimwhyhedidnotobeyGod.Heaskedhimwhyhehadtaken

theplunderanddoneevilintheeyesofGod.

Saulrespondedwithadenial.HesaidthathehadobeyedGod.Hesaidhehadcompletely

destroyedtheAmalekitesandbroughtbacktheirking.HesaidthesoldierstookthesheepandcattleinordertosacrificethemtoGod.

Samuelreplied:DoestheLORDdelightinburntofferingsandsacrificesasmuchasin

obeyingtheLORD?Toobeyisbetterthansacrifice,andtoheedisbetterthanthefatof

rams.HetoldSaulthatbecausehehadrejectedthewordofGod,Hehasrejectedyouasking.

ThenSaulconfessedhissintoSamuel.Hesaidthathewasafraidofthemenandgaveintothem.HebeggedforforgivenessandaskedSamueltocomebackwithhimsohecould

worshipGod.

ButSamuelrefused.HetoldSaulagainthatbecausehehadrejectedthewordofGod,that

GodhadrejectedhimaskingoverIsrael.

SamuelturnedtoleaveandSaulcaughtholdofhimbythehemofhisrobeandittore.

Samuelsaidtohim,GodhastornthekingdomofIsraelfromyoutodayandhasgivenittooneofyourneighborstoonebetterthanyou.

AgainSaulconfessedhissintoSamuelandbeggedhimtogobackwithhimtohonorhim

beforetheeldersandthepeople,andallowhimtoworshipGod.SamuelagreedandwentbackwithSaul.SaulworshippedGod.

ThenSamuelsentforAgag,kingoftheAmalekites.Agagthoughtthatthebitternessof

deathhadpassedandhecamebeforeSamuelbelievinghewouldbespared.However,Samuelsaid,Asyourswordhasmadewomenchildless,sowillyourmotherbechildless

amongwomen.AndSamuelputAgagtodeathbeforetheLORDatGilgal.

ThenSamuelleft.HedidnotgotoseeSaulagainforaslongashelived,eventhoughhe

mournedforSaul.AndGodregrettedthathehadmadeSaulkingoverIsrael.

TheeventintodaysstoryoccursduringthelifeofJesus.Thereligiousleadersofhistime

wantedtotripJesusupwithtrickyquestions.Jesususedthesetimestoteachhisfollowerswhileherespondedtowhatwereintendedasdifficultquestions.

TheGreatestCommandment

ThePhariseeswereoneofthegroupsofreligiousleadersduringthetimeJesuslivedasa

manhereontheearth.TheyhadseenandheardhowtheSadducees(anothergroupofreligiousleaders)hadfailedtotrapJesuswithaquestionaboutwhosewifeawomanwould

beaftertheresurrectionthathadbeenthewifeofsevendifferentbrothersaftereach

GodspoketoMosesandsaid,IhaveheardthegrumblingoftheIsraelites.Tellthem,At
