Principal’s Message We have had a very full and exciting start to the Summer

Term and I write with news of the fantastic and busy Spring

term at Oasis Shirley Park that has passed.

Our youngest students have settled into their brand new building at

the Stroud Green campus. It is a truly special place for our very

younger Primary learners to take their first steps in education.

Meanwhile our Year 6s, 11s and Sixth Formers are facing their

challenging exams head on. As always, they have been supported by

our dedicated staff.

Our students have travelled far and wide this year, including the

World War I battlefields, the Houses of Parliament, a Year 7

adventure in Wales and a chocolate museum! Recent visitors to our

Academy have included MPs, Headteachers on a UK study tour and

Harry Olmer, a survivor of the holocaust. We were also honoured to

receive an award from the Minister of State for Schools, Rt Hon

David Laws, who acknowledged the achievements of students eligible

for the Pupil Premium Grant.

We look forward to a hugely successful Summer term.

This term, Oasis Academy Shirley Park had a very special

visitor as staff and students played host to Nick Gibb,

Minister of State for School Reform. The Minister, who was

visiting the wider community, had asked local MP Gavin

Barwell to take him to a school that served as an example

of exceptional education. As a long-time advocate of the

school the MP nominated Shirley Park, an academy that is

Outstanding in every category. During the visit members of

the Academy team and other leaders briefed the minister

on the success story of the school’s journey since

becoming an Oasis Academy.

Nick Gibb then had the opportunity to witness first-hand

the community ethos, outstanding learning and high

expectations that pervade every aspect of Academy life

with a tour by Luke Townsend (Whole Academy Deputy

Head Boy) and Wuyata Musa (Year 13 Head Girl). The

visit by the minister is another sign of the high regard

for the school in the local community. MP Gavin

Barwell recently stated Oasis had “done an amazing job

turning round Ashburton Community School, now Oasis

Academy Shirley Park, which was recently rated as

outstanding in every regard by Ofsted.”

Secondary Phase Fun…..

Money raised £429 (42,900 pennies)

This year, World Book Day turned out to

be bigger and better than ever before at

the Secondary Phase. All week, students

attended assemblies about the joy of

reading and heard all about World Book

Day. It finally culminated in an amazing

and exciting day at the Academy, as

teachers from across subject areas

donned book character costumes to

promote reading. In English, the lovely

Juliana Rose created a wonderful corridor

display, whilst Lizzie Gardner in the

Reading Room continued to fly the literacy

flag by helping students discover reading

during break, lunch and lesson time. In

addition, the Public Library provided a

storyteller for a Year 7 class, which Lisa

McCarthy-Wicks and Helen Ottley helped

support. It was truly wonderful to see our

Year 7 students enthralled and entertained

- a real highlight of the day!

Primary premier league trophy visit

On Thursday 30th April, Barclays brought the Premier League trophy to the Primary Phase,

through their brand new #Spiritofthegame project.

Damien Comolli Visit On Friday 24th April, we had the great pleasure of

hosting Damien Comolli the former coach, scout and

director of football at AS Monaco, AS Saint-Étienne,

Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. Comolli

came in to speak with the 6th form PE Students and

Crystal Palace FC Academy students highlighting his

career achievements and providing valuable life skills

on how our students can achieve their goals.

His career remains largely successful working for some of the country’s most high profile clubs and

unearthing a wealth of talent including World cup winner Thierry Henry, Luis Suarez, Emmanuel Petit,

Jordan Henderson and Gareth Bale just to name a few. Most

notably though was Comilli’s attempt to revolutionise the

recruitment of players explaining how he used a statistics

based model to track performance and potential rather than

traditionally watching players and making a judgement on just

instinct. Comolli finished by telling students how he had

achieved a degree in Law alongside his desire to be successful

in football. This was a great opportunity for our students to

meet somebody so accomplished in his field, whilst providing

some key life skills which can be transferred into every area.

On Tuesday 3rd March, the annual Panathlon challenge took

place at Crystal Palace National Sports centre, an initiative

based on providing sporting opportunities to over 5,000

disabled young people every. Since 1999, the organisation has run over 500 ‘mini Paralympic’ multi-

sport competitions for secondary and primary school children whilst

training over 1,000 Young Leaders aged 14-19 who act as sport leaders.

After some initial training, Shirley Park Students Libby Davison, Jaimee Heward, Akaash Boodhoo,

Danny O’Rourke, Breeze Carmichael, Michelle Much, Amel Ramsie, Hakim Isa, Rhys Brown, Danny

Scott, Israel Antwi, Justine Norris, Esther Asante and Liam Coates were all on hand to assist at everystage officiating the events in an efficient, professional

manner. They also showed initiative by mentoring some

of the athletes through a number of particularly difficult

events. In an action-packed day the South London

Panathlon Finals saw 148 children from 15 schools

compete against one another, culminating in Croydon

being crowned champions, while Kensington & Chelsea

won the Plate competition.

James Tinney event organiser said “The children that

took part in the games today really enjoyed themselves-

Thanks so much for involving your leaders today - they

excelled!”

Last term three Shirley Park students Layla Garcia, Tywon Grayand Yaw Obiri-Addai attended the All Schools Rugby workshopprogramme. This initiative has been set up by the RFU to giveselected Schools £10,000 of funding with the aim of developinga self-sufficient rugby school.

Graduation

At the beginning of this academic year, Oasis Academy Shirley Park launched a brand new Saturday school transition programme called Step Up. This has provided an exciting opportunity for our Year 7 cohort to engage socially and learn together outside of their normal school lessons.

In partnership with the Shine Trust,

Step Up has focused on the essential

literacy and numeracy skills, which

learners will need to succeed at GCSE

through a range of exciting and engaging sessions in a relaxed Saturday environment. Led

by staff member James Canvin, the Step Up programme is the first of its type in the

borough remaining unique to Shirley Park as we employ our own ‘heroes’, students from

Years 11 and 12 who volunteer their time, to work in small groups with the students to

ensure they have the support they need to make a successful start to Secondary school life

and continue to progress through their Key Stage 3 career and beyond.

Over the 23 weeks this has included focus on

numeracy, literacy, sporting activities, arts

and a residential trip to Trewern over the

Easter holidays where they participated in

kayaking, rock climbing, caving, abseiling and

an assault course; a great reward for

students and their efforts over the academic

year. As the programme came to a close on

Saturday, students’ achievements over the

past year were celebrated with a graduation

ceremony. Family and friends were invited as

the graduates were awarded their certificates

For more information about Step Up please click here

for completing the programme, dressed in purple robes in keeping with the Shirley Park

colours. Following this, the students ran a fete to raise money for Stop the Traffik, RSPCA and

Save the Children, with face painting, badge making, literacy SPLAT and a greatly contested

penalty shootout competition, just some of the activities on offer – a total of £300 was raised.

Oasis Academy Arena

Update

We are delighted to share news with you about the next phase of the

opening of our brand new partner school, Oasis Academy Arena.

Oasis Academy Arena will be a brand new secondary school adjacent to the Croydon Arena

Athletics stadium, opening in September 2015 for its first cohort of Year 7 students. Students will

occupy refurbished classrooms at the former Oasis Ryelands school during the first academic year,

moving into the brand new building in 2016 (see the visuals on this page). We will work closely with

the Arena Academy; Mr Denham and Ms Lee will be leading the school alongside Shirley Park,

and we will be sharing resources, ideas and best practice.

Our student leaders have already been involved in running a very successful Taster Day for

children who have been offered a place at Arena – we were thrilled to have 80 of them here on

Saturday 14th March, eating breakfast with our Year 7s who were attending the Step Up Saturday

School, participating in teambuilding and problem solving exercises, getting to know one another

and forming early bonds and friendships. Students had the opportunity to design their ‘dream

uniform’ and parents were also invited in to ask any questions they may have about the new

school.

Whilst we are now full with a sizeable waiting list

for the Shirley Park Year 7 cohort for September

2015, there are still places available at Oasis

Academy Arena.
