The following safety proceduresamongst others will be in placewhen laying the pipeline for theproject:

• Adequate Depth ofCover: the depth of coverfor the pipeline will be1.2m into the ground, thus ensuring that noaccidental digging willlead to rupturing of thepipeline.

• A 3-layer polytheneprotection will be anadditional protection forthe pipes.

• Pathway of the pipelineswill be properly marked toensure no accidentaldigging is done along thepipeline route.

Commenting further, Mr.Osunsanya added, “Natural gasis the most attractive energysource in the world today and

offers itself as a cheaper, cleanerand safer alternative, whencompared to other sources ofenergy. It is also an energysource whose usage isincreasing because of its uniquequalities, in terms of safety, reliability, cost andenvironmental friendliness. I canalso assure you that we will beexecuting the best of communityrelations programmes just as we

did in the Lagos pipelineproject.”

The 128 km gas pipeline whichis presently being constructedwill have UNICEM in Calabar asits primary customer. Thefactory, which is currently underconstruction, is scheduled forcompletion in 2009 and willutilize Natural Gas supplied byEast Horizon Gas Company forboth its power and processrequirements.
