It’s Grand Final time... The wait is finally over! This is without doubt the most exciting week of the SFNL calendar and on behalf of the SFNL Board and Administration, I would like to extend congratulations to all the clubs that are represented in a SFNL SAS Security Grand Final this weekend.

Well done and a big congratulations to the Black Rock Football Club for winning the SFNL SAS Security Division 3 Senior Grand Final last weekend. It was a great contest all day and Black Rock just continued to keep Mount Waverley at arm’s length.

I would like to particularly highlight and pass on my congratulations to the Black Rock Football Club entire Committee, including Nick McMillan and Andrew Ferguson. This club has completely turned around on and off the field over the last three years and while on field success is extremely important, this would not have been possible without the enormous work put in off the field. Well done Black Rock!

In the Division 3 Reserve Grand Final, congratulations to Endeavour Hills winning over Black Rock and in the Thirds-Red Grand Final, congratulations to Skye winning as premiers and champions in a nail-biter over Keysborough.

What an unbelievable weekend we have of Grand Finals with some unique and very intriguing stories being told in this year’s Finals Series.

Division 1 Senior - Dingley v Mordialloc • Dingley into back to back Division 1 Senior Grand Finals.

• Mordialloc the first team since Balwyn in 1997- 1998, to win the Division 2 Grand Final and make the Division 1 Grand Final the following year (which they won).

• Mordialloc making their third Grand Final in a row (two previously in Division 2) with the Division 1 Grand Final spot secured from fifth on the ladder.

Division 2 Senior – Oakleigh District v Murrumbeena • Oakleigh District eyeing their first Senior premiership since 1958.

• Murrumbeena eyeing their first Senior premiership since 2003.

Under 19 – St Kilda City v Hampton • St Kilda City eyeing their third Under 19 premiership in the last seven years.

• Hampton in their second Under 19 Grand Final and eyeing their first ever Under 19 premiership.

I hope all clubs, officials, players and fans have enjoyed their season of Southern football and netball and we look forward to seeing you all again for a bigger and better season 2016.

Very best wishes to all our grand finalists this weekend – good luck!

@SFNLCEO

PLAYER OF THE ROUNDAlthough Bastion was serviceable in the first half, his work after the long break was simply extraordinary. He was unstoppable around the stoppages, winning clearance after clearance and bombing the ball into attack again and again. Although the team had a plethora of contributors, the skipper led from the front, kicking a crucial final-term goal and helping inspire his side to their remarkable turnaround from 48 points down in the Preliminary Final.

Congratulations Todd.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

DIVISION 1: FRONT & CENTRE / WILL HUNTERA devastating second-half onslaught has seen Mordialloc steamroll reigning Division 1 premier East Brighton in Sunday’s Preliminary Final in one of the most remarkable victories the SFNL has seen in many a year.

Played in warm and sunny conditions at Springvale Reserve, the Bloods overcame two first half send-offs and a daunting deficit to advance to the Division 1 Grand Final against all odds.

In the first minute of the second term East Brighton put through their seventh straight major to lead 50 to two and at that stage a 15-goal drubbing was on the cards.

If you had said at that moment that Mordialloc would eventually run out winners by 33 points, you would have been laughed out of the venue.

But what transpired from then on was one of the most spectacular comebacks - at any level - in recent memory, and certainly one of the all-time great SFNL performances.

Mordi booted 15 of the last 16 goals of the game, including an unanswered 9.0 in a final-term blitzkrieg that had East Brighton fans - and radio commentators – watching on in stunned silence, while sending the Bloods faithful on the outer into unbridled delirium.

The Vampires started the game like a house on fire, posting four goals in the first nine minutes - Jeremy Heys with two of them - to completely stun Mordialloc.

The Bloods simply couldn’t get their hands on the footy in the midfield, with big Hamish Dahl putting on a clinic in the ruck and giving the East Brighton midfielders first use from the centre bounce.

However, they were let down by inaccuracy in front of the sticks, registering 6.8 for the term, and given their dominance all over the park, they should have led by more than the 42-point margin that stood at the first change.

It looked like getting ugly for the Bloods when Phil Smith drilled the opening goal of the second term to extend the margin to 48 points.

James Morris finally opened the account for Mordialloc soon after with two wonderful goals in as many minutes, and although they lifted their intensity and showed glimpses of classy ball movement, it did little to arrest East Brighton’s stranglehold on the match.

But halfway through the term it all went pear-shaped for the Bloods. As the Vampires went into lockdown, frustrations reached boiling point for Mordialloc. Andrew Fyans and Joel Waters were both yellow-carded and forced from the field within minutes of each other for separate indiscretions, handing East Brighton a two-man advantage and extra numbers at every contest.

Six goals down at the half, and with just 16 players on the field for much of the third term, Mordialloc dug deep and produced one of the gutsiest quarters of football of the year. They put the clamps on their tiring opponents, holding them goalless while booting three themselves into a slight breeze to get themselves back within 20 points and give themselves a chance of an unlikely comeback.

But what happened next would have been beyond the wildest dreams of even the most ardent Bloods supporter.

East Brighton had done their dash and looked to be running on empty in the warmth of the searing September sun, and Mordi took full advantage. They simply ran the older and bigger-bodied Vampires off their legs, dominating possession through the midfield and began eroding the deficit.

With every six-pointer, the Bloods faithful became even more boisterous, and when James Pennycuick snapped a tremendous goal – their fourth of the term – from 45 metres out at the 16-minute mark, the Bloods claimed the lead for the first time in the match. Cue pandemonium.

The final eight minutes saw an avalanche of goals at the Springvale Road end as the Bloods romped home convincingly, much to the chagrin of the shell-shocked Vampires.

Skipper Todd Bastion, Jake O’Donnell and Beau Turner were unstoppable in the Bloods’ second-half resurgence, winning a heap of possessions and all but monopolising the clearances.

Joel Waters owed his teammates after his sin-binning, and delivered in spades following his re-emergence. He delivered two goal assists to start the final term, among other telling touches.

Up forward Morris and Pennycuick finished with four majors each (Pennycuick’s all came in the final term), while Sam Anstey’s two classy long-range goals both came at critical junctures.

Josh Jewell also did a tremendous job nullifying East Brighton’s dangerous spearhead Smith, who could only manage one goal. Admittedly, the Big Show had very limited opportunities to impact the scoreboard.

Dahl, Ben Douthie, Barry Hope and Peter Larson were handy early for the Vampires but their contributions were diminished after the long break.

Damien Rayson, however, fought hard to the final siren and was outstanding in the clinches. Despite his team’s loss, he remained one of the most influential players on the ground. Unfortunately, he lacked support when the game was in the balance.

East Brighton now must lick their wounds and reload for next year, while for the victorious Mordialloc it’s onwards to a date with Dingley in the Big Dance.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

Dingley vs Mordialloc (Springvale Reserve)

Previous Meetings:

Round 3 (Ben Kavanagh Reserve) Mordialloc 11.7 (73) def Dingley 10.8 (68)

Round 12 (Souter Oval) Dingley 7.14 (56) def by Mordialloc 8.9 (57)

After 10 months of solid training, 18 gruelling home and away rounds and three weeks of hard-fought finals we are now left with our two Division 1 Grand Finalists.

Dingley and Mordialloc will do battle at Springvale Reserve on Sunday for the ultimate prize and football immortality.

The all-powerful Dingoes return to the well hoping to erase the heartbreak of last year’s agonising Grand Final loss to East Brighton and claim its first SFNL Division 1 premiership.

Meanwhile the Bloods, in just its first season back in the top grade, will play in their third consecutive Grand Final after reaching back-to-back Division 2 deciders in 2013-14.

In the process they have become just the second team in the 24-year history of the Southern Football Netball League to reach a Division 1 Grand Final the year after winning a second division flag, and the first since the all-conquering Balwyn premiership sides of 1997-98.

It’s a Cinderella story that has captured the attention of all local football followers.

And given the recent history between these two teams, the stage is set for an

absolute corker of a Grand Final.

These two teams have met twice already this year, with both matches going down to the wire.

Dingley went into both games as heavy favourites, but it was

Mordialloc that emerged victorious on both occasions

by a cumulative margin of just six points.

In their first meeting back in Round 3 Mordialloc booted three goals in the last six minutes to steal a five-point win, while in the Round 12 return bout Dingoes forward Calhan McQueen’s

after-the-siren shot for goal fell agonisingly short, handing the Bloods victory by the narrowest of margins.

These two wins show that Mordialloc matches up well against their star-studded rivals, but Bloods coach Sam Antsey said that these

victories don’t necessarily fill his side with confidence that they have the Dingoes’ measure.

“It does and it doesn’t (give us confidence against Dingley). We’ve been very lucky to beat them twice,” Anstey said.

“While you’re happy you have beaten them, you’re definitely not confident. They’ve been the best team all year, but we know we can at least match it with them. And if you’re in the game, anything can happen.”

And Dingley certainly have been the best side all year, dropping just three matches for the year – the eight-point loss to St Pauls in Round 15 was the other blemish – on their way to their second straight minor premiership.

But while they didn’t dominate the home and away rounds like they did in 2014, their recent finals form has been immeasurably better than in recent seasons.

Their hard-fought win a fortnight ago against their nemesis East Brighton in the Second Semi saw them win straight through the big dance. This is in stark contrast their poor performances in finals past, and in particular 12 months prior, which saw them succumb to the weight of expectation and suffer two humiliating defeats to the Vampires in three weeks.

So what’s changed? A couple of things, really, but one factor stands out above all others.

“It’s definitely mental,” Dingoes coach Shane Morwood said.

“The guys are physically stronger, and yeah we have a different crew and a few different players, but I think at the end of the day you’ve got to have that strong resolve mentally to actually get through things.”

The win over the Vampires a fortnight ago was perhaps the turning point. Trailing for most of the afternoon, the Dingoes lifted and found a way to win, which gave the playing group the belief that they can handle the immense pressure of a huge final.

And rather than “limp” into the Grand Finals like they did last year, they go into this game thinking that “this is the best form we’ve had in a finals series”.

Meanwhile Mordialloc are the feel-good story of the year. They qualified for the finals in fifth position after losing four of their last five home and away games, before pulling off three stunning upset wins against quality opponents in

DIVISION 1: GRAND FINAL PREVIEW / WILL HUNTERSt Pauls, East Malvern and East Brighton to make the Granny.

And now they are riding a tidal wave of emotion into the biggest game of the year and have a genuine belief they can continue their winning run.

“Obviously (there’s) a lot of energy from the boys, but just really good vibes at the moment which is good, which hopefully we can sustain and take into this weekend,” Anstey said.

“East Brighton was the last team that we hadn’t beaten, so we’ve beaten every single team throughout the year at some stage. So I think in the back of our minds we always knew we were good enough if we could produce our best footy.”

Part of their form reversal in the last three weeks can be attributed to their ability to beat their opponents in the clearances. The trio of Beau Turner, Jake O’Donnell and skipper Todd Bastion are vital cogs in the Mordialloc engine room and have been instrumental in helping their side win the ball from stoppages every week.

Dingley, however, don’t have many extractors outside of Josh Boyle. But what they lack in grunt they make up in spades with polished outside run, and this is where they hurt teams. Jackson Peet, Luke Bartholomew and Dan Bolger can all turn a game with their explosiveness through the guts while Dan Farmer, who has only recently been tried in to the midfield, is one of the most damaging players in the competition.

The Dingoes also boast perhaps the most potent forward set up in the competition with the likes of McQueen (who is coming off a six-goal haul in the Semi), Dean Francis, Steve Gaertner and Marcus Freeman.

Up the other end, James Morris looms as the key

to Mordialloc kicking a winning score. A

proven big-game performer, Morris booted

seven majors in the Bloods’ 2014 Grand Final win

over Skye and he and

his partner in crime, James

Pennycuick, will no doubt cause

headaches for Dingley’s defence.

But Mordi’s biggest chance of victory rests on the shoulders of Anstey himself. A supremely talented footballer with an outstanding footy nous, Anstey has an uncanny ability to impact every contest. He may not be a prolific ball-winner, but he never wastes a disposal and can always be relied upon to step up when his side needs him.

Despite the multitude of weapons in his arsenal, Morwood said he need every single player to full their role in order for them to win the game, rather than rely on one or two match-winners.

“We need 22 players playing their role and playing it well so I think if we do that then we are a massive chance to win the game,” he said.

“So if we are relying on one player to do a job then we are in trouble.”

Dingley will enter the Grand Final having played just one match in the last three weeks, which would give the players ample time to overcome any niggles and rest their tired and sore bodies.

In contrast, Mordialloc will no doubt be battle-weary after contesting three consecutive hard-fought finals in that same period – the last of which was played in very warm conditions. You’d think that would take its toll on them physically.

The Bloods will enter this Grand Final as underdogs, which will suit them perfectly. They’ve been underdogs for the entire finals series and they just keep finding ways to win. They seem to flourish when their backs are against the wall and will fancy their chances to win, no matter how far behind they get.

However, they will encounter a Dingley side that seems to have learnt from their previous disappointments and finally shaken off the mental demons that haunted them in last year’s finals series.

They may not have beaten the Bloods this year, but Grand Finals are a completely different ball game. The planets seem to be aligning for the Dingoes and they are hitting peak form at the best time. Season 2015 looks to finally be their year and I expect them to get over the line in what could well be one of the all-time great Grand Finals.

Dingley by eight points.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE

DIVISION 1: CLUB NOTESMORDIALLOC Preliminary Final – 13 September 2015 It is always wonderful to be able to bring news of success as any season draws to a close, and happily I am able to start this week’s column by talking about a winning grand final for our Masters side in the South Reserves competition. The side, made up of a spritely group of club legends and enthusiastic ball chasers alike, took on Cranbourne on their own patch on Sunday, and came home with the silverware to the tune of 70 points to 49. Congratulations to the lads – a fine end to a momentous season.

To the firsts, and in a season that seems to throw up one surprise after the next, possibly the biggest one of the lot came about on the second last playing day of the season. With the score at 50 to two a couple of minutes into the second quarter, you’d have been excused for ringing Ladbrokes to see if you could get $2 about East Brighton, as they’d have been paying $1.02 everywhere else. But the game turned on its head, and as a result Mordialloc play Dingley next week in a grand final.

Our boys spent the first ten minutes wondering which way their opponents went. East Brighton had obviously aimed to break us early, and came out switched on and playing some of the best football seen this season. Thankfully for us, their dominance only netted them a total

of 6.8 – it could have been yet worse – and after we conceded the first goal of the second term things were looking bleak. But James Morris got us on the board soon after, and that seemed to settle the fraying nerves. The rest of the quarter was played under more even terms, but we still went to oranges six goals behind.

We needed a big third term into the wind, and by heck, we got one. After a couple of early forays by the Vampires it was Mordialloc that began to tackle like demons in the midfield, be more mobile in the forward half, and find more run all over the ground. With a Josh Jewell-led backline keeping their dangerous opponents under control, we set about reducing the damage on the scoreboard. A 20-point deficit at the last change looked manageable given that we were to come home with a three-goal breeze at our backs, and three goals did indeed come quite quickly. Mordialloc were hence within striking distance seven minutes into the last term, but the goal that put us in front felt like it took a fortnight to arrive. Like the proverbial London buses, however, several more quickly followed, and by the final siren after which Chook landed our ninth of the quarter, Mordialloc emerged victorious by 33 points.

We pay tribute to East Brighton, a fine football team, beaten but not bowed. We know you’ll be back.

And so we go to the grand final; the canine derby between the Dingoes and the Bloodhounds. We have every respect for the Dingley football club, and wish them all the best leading up to the decider. For the part of our committee and supporters, we take great pride in the fact that we are there, and give great thanks to the coaching and playing staff that have got us to this point. May both sides play their best football – if so, the game will truly be a spectacle worthy of the occasion.

For one final time, the Mordialloc Football Netball Club would like to extend sincere thanks and gratitude to our great bunch of 2015 Sponsors listed below: Sticky Labels (Major Sponsor), Bendigo Bank, Velocity Management Group, Jim’s Mowing, Develop your Backyard, Mordy Personal Training, Boatrocker Brewery, Summit Concrete Pumping, Ray White Mordialloc, Hartley Australia, Right Choice Conveyancing, Australian Mortgage Brokers, Mordialloc Bike Shop, Metro Meats, Kingston Skip Hire, Mordialloc Pizza & Pasta, Supreme Solutions, Mark Dreyfus MP, Mordialloc Cellar Door, Melbourne Trailer & Caravan Supplies, Carmotive, Arden Homes, Information Potential, Complete Business Services, Lifecare Chiropractic, Main Street Cafe,

DINGLEY Disappointment for Matty’s U19s, as a very good Hampton outfit denied Dingley the opportunity to have all four sides represented in this weekend’s Grand Finals. Still, a remarkable achievement for all our teams to have got as far as they have. Congratulations also to our fabulous Supers, who capped their season with another flag in a thrilling win at Casey Fields last Sunday.

The big day of reckoning has arrived, and, after arguably an upset result in the Prelim, the Dingoes are facing perhaps not the foe they were expecting. Mordy’s effort in their first

year back has been outstanding, and, given that they are the only team we haven’t been able to better this season, we are in for a hell of a fight. Five years of meticulous preparation by our coaching team and an accompanying linear improvement are on the line on Sunday, and nothing short of a do-or-die commitment from every team member fortunate enough to gain selection will vindicate all the hard work. Good luck to the Thirds and Reserves, and hopefully by the time the seniors take the field on Sunday afternoon, the Dingoes will be gunning for their third premiership for the weekend, and make for memorable post-match celebrations.

CHELTENHAMRoyal Oak Hotel Reserves When we ran out for our Round 1 match against St Kilda City, just TWO of last year’s Grand Final lineup remained. With so many new faces it took a while for everyone to get to know how each other played, but there were good signs in patches in the first half of the season. A mass of injuries to the Seniors saw many players get their opportunity both in the above grade, but also stepping up from the Under 19s and Thirds to help fill up numbers in the Reserves. From there, the boys have gone from strength to strength and now a return date with the Dingoes awaits. Congratulations to Mick McGettigan in his first year as coach for being able to do what seemed impossible at the start

of the season, but there is one final mountain to climb. #WhyNotUs?

The Southern Football Netball League Division 2 finals have been nothing short of spectacular and the Preliminary Final between Murrumbeena and Caulfield more than lived up to expectations.

Murrumbeena has overcome a 12-point half time deficit to defeat Caulfield 10.13 (73) to 9.11 (65) and secure its spot in the 2015 Grand Final. Mitch Walder produced a remarkable second half performance in a best on ground effort that also included three goals, while Jake Buggy did his best to try and get the Bears over the line.

Caulfield got off to the best possible start with five opening-quarter goals as Murrumbeena struggled to have an impact on the game, despite kicking the first goal of the match.

The Bears looked too strong and the run through the midfield from the likes of Buggy and Ash Cooper had their opponents on the backfoot while ruckman Adam Ballard was able to get his hands on the ball first in the ruck.

Murrumbeena showed slight improvement in the second term but inaccuracy hurt it, reeling off five behinds to trail Caulfield by two goals at the main break.

Again the Beena got the first goal of the quarter but were unable to capitalise on the momentum they had gained while the Bears seemingly went from strength to strength and an upset was on the cards.

Matters got worse for Murrumbeena when Walder left dazed after a contest, coming off the ground due to not knowing which ground he was playing at.

That didn’t seem to stop him in the second half as his teammates rallied behind him to step up and put the pressure back on their opponents.

Walder levelled the scores midway through the third quarter with his first goal before Chris Dove bagged his second major to give the Bears the lead going into the final break.

Although Caulfield had the lead, Murrumbeena was playing a better brand of football and looked capable of over-running the Bears as they struggled to make their way through Murrumbeena’s now famous defensive press.

Jason Twirdy gave the Bears some breathing space early in the fourth quarter with his first goal before Murrumbeena fought back as Mitch Walder stood tall, taking two strong contested marks, inside 50 and duly converting to put his side in front with little time remaining.

With the game on the line both sides fought tooth and nail to drive the ball forward but it would be the Beena who succeeded and Sam Parkes kicked the sealer to give Murrumbeena the eight-point win and a spot in the Grand Final.

1958. In case you’re wondering what that year means to the Oakleigh District Football Club here is the answer. It is the last time it celebrated a premiership win. In the 57 years since that glorious day Oakleigh have been runner-up on 11 occasions but will be out to try and turn the tables around with arguably the best team they have put on the park. Ironically enough, the last team the Oaks defeated in a Grand Final – you guessed it – Murrumbeena.

Murrumbeena, on the other hand, are the Cinderella story of the season. A team a lot of people thought

would be fighting off relegation but instead dug in and battled its way into the Grand Final. For the players and coaches, the Grand Final is a reward for determination and hard work

and they will go into the match with a never-say-die attitude

knowing that they have nothing to lose, that

in the eyes of their supporters they are

already winners.

It will be a day of celebration for one team and heartbreak for

another.

Let’s delve into what could make or break the Southern Football Netball League Division 2 Grand Final.

Oakleigh will undoubtedly go into the match as heavy favourites after defeating Murrumbeena three times throughout the season and comfortably winning its way into the decider.

The minor premiers will be coming off only one game in the last four weeks and the players look to be fresh, but will there be a question mark over match fitness considering the lack of football the side has played in recent years.

I am reminded of the 2010 Division 3 Grand Final between Mount Waverley and Hampton. Similar to Murrumbeena, Hampton went into the match as underdogs, but through grit and determination overcame a lacklustre Mount Waverley who faced the same situation as Oakleigh and came off second best.

There is no doubt in my mind that both sides have the ability to win this game so let’s look at some of the potential key players for Oakleigh and Murrumbeena.

Dave Velardo – Oakleigh District The power forward has been the Oaks most damaging player this season and will be the focal point inside 50. He has kicked 64 goals this season to top the League and has shown the ability to turn the game on its head and stand up for Oakleigh when required.

DIVISION 2: GRAND FINAL PREVIEW / JASON BARBIN

He is a tough matchup for any defender and could prove to be a handful for the Beena. Look for an outside the box matchup of Sam Moloney who has the athletic ability to keep up with Velardo. He is a player who is loved by the coaching staff at Murrumbeena and has had an impressive season.

Mitch Walder – Murrumbeena Captain courageous lifted his side to victory with a stunning second half performance to drag his side over the line against a gallant Caulfield. His two final-quarter goals sparked his side to victory and he has become a proven match-winner and genuine tough nut.

His size combined with his running ability makes him a difficult player to stop and could take the likes of experienced Oakleigh defender Luke Casey to try and shut him down or even Marty Gurry who is capable of

using his body to win the stoppages.

Dan Kiellerup – Oakleigh District The medium-sized

forward turned half back runner has starred in that

role for the Oaks in the last few years

and can be a game-breaker when on form. He provides Oakleigh with hard running and clean disposal off the half back line and has proven to be

a smart user of the ball.

Murrumbeena could look at

having a forward play a defensive role on Kiellerup to restrict his run and carry. Alex Moloney is a livewire forward who would force Kiellerup to be accountable going in the other direction and though he isn’t the biggest player for the Beena, he has lightning speed and good goal sense.

Dean Spanos – Murrumbeena I have been big on Spanos all year but so far he has been underwhelming in the finals. Spanos is a versatile player who can play in the midfield and then pinch hit up forward and is also a proven match-winner, having done so against Caulfield earlier in the year.

If Spanos gets off the leash he is a damaging player and could be the spark that gets Murrumbeena over the line. Look for a possible matchup against Gurry as the two big bodied players could clash in the middle, making for an entertaining midfield battle.

Overall this game has a bit of everything and Oakleigh will deservedly go into this match as favourites. But as I said earlier, Murrumbeena will go into the match with nothing to lose as the underdogs.

Oakleigh has the firepower to win the game and win reasonably comfortably but an upset on Grand Final day is always on the cards. Will the Oaks cave in again under the pressure as Murrumbeena defy the odds and claim the flag, or will they finally deliver after 57 years?

DIVISION 2: CLUB NOTES

MURRUMBEENA Murrumbeena and Caulfield met in a local derby last Saturday, except it was played at Cheltenham and was the second division Preliminary final. Caulfield seemed to be in control of the game in the first half. The Beena boys were trying hard, but the Bears were more accurate and appeared to be stronger. In the second half the game started to turn. Murrumbeena chipped away at Caulfield’s lead with a never say die attitude. Beena went into the final change only a couple of goals down. With a grand final spot up for grabs, the Beena boys did what they have done so many times this year. They just

kept fighting and bit by bit took the game back. Murrumbeena hit the front with about ten minutes to go and then made sure the game was not going to slip. Murrumbeena ended up with an 8 point win which was gutsy if not pretty; against a Caulfield side that fought it out to the end. Well done Beena. Some of our best players in an all-round effort were Mitch Walder, Dechlan Turkington, Sam Moloney and Darcy Hargrave.

Now let’s see what we can do today. This is the ultimate challenge against Oakleigh Districts. Go get ém Beena.

Off The Field CHRISTMAS TREES FOR SALE. The MFNC is

having a Christmas Tree drive this year. Trees at great prices can be picked up from the club rooms on 29th November and 6th December. Prices between $60 and $80 dollars. Stands available for $40. More details to come.

Sponsors The ‘Beena is indebted to the following 2015 loyal sponsors: Thomson Real Estate, Sheen Panels, Oakleigh Lions, Chadstone Toyota, Attwood Newsagency, Brew Café, Bowen Automotive, NAB, Bakers Delight Carnegie, the Rosstown Hotel, Morgans Finance Advisors Brighton, Bendigo Bank, Flight Centre Carnegie, Gianna Molinaro of South Melbourne, Ace of Clubs Rubbish Removals and all our player sponsors.

HAMPTON Under 19s Near perfect conditions confronted the boys on Sunday in what was their biggest challenge so far this season. Dingley jumped us at the start and then unfortunately we lost Harvey Little to a knee injury early in the game which upset our rotations and forced Gassy to play on ball. Finally after 19 minutes of footy we were able to get on the board through Zac Allen who marked strongly and converted. Deep into time on we kicked another to only go in at ¼ time 7 points down.

Our pressure in the second ¼ was outstanding lead by Gassy and Liam in the middle, Josh and Bunna up forward and The

Smiths down back. We went into the break at ½ time with a slender 2 point lead.

To the boys credit they played outstanding footy in the second half to completely dominate against a more fancied opponent. We beat them in every area, even when challenged we keep our heads and responded by going harder at the footy and completely out tackled, out ran and outscored the Dingeos. The boys believe and trust in each other is outstanding and they thoroughly deserve the result and the opportunity to play in a Grand Final.

Good luck this week, enjoy the week and you never know.

Go Hammers !!

Social Presentation night - hurry up if you haven’t paid, you can’t pay in the night and we may be able to squeeze you in, it’s nearly a sell out. Four piece band playing, going to be huge.

Ilya Fridman, Kai Allison and Leigh Dawkins are three of the most distinguished and respected umpires in the Southern Football Netball League, but their proficiency belies their limited experience in the caper.

The trio entered the 2015 season with a combined five years of involvement with the umpiring fraternity, yet are still among the League’s top whistle-blowers.

Part of the reason behind the rapid ascension of these three men to the top echelons of SFNL Umpiring is their thorough

understanding of the game through their vast experience as players at different levels.

And their stories are remarkable similar. All three boys speak of their football careers cut short by injury before taking up umpiring as a way to maintain an involvement in the game they love.

Fridman spoke to the SFNL Record in the lead-up to Community Umpiring Round back in May about his playing career with SFNL clubs Bentleigh (then in the VAFA), Dingley and VFL side Casey Scorpions.

After showing plenty of talent as a footballer, he was later crippled by a horrid run of injury and illness, including glandular fever, a dislocated knee, broken patella and lower back/spinal injuries.

A mate of his then suggested he consider taking up umpiring as a way to regain fitness and aid his injury rehabilitation.

Allison, too, showed enough promise during his brief football career to suggest he had what it took to play at a high level.

A tall goal-kicking midfielder/winger with the Gippsland Power in the juniors, Allison looked set to play against their elite TAC Cup Under 18s squad before stress fractures in his lower back and a chronic hip injury, similar to Osteitis Pubis, took over.

Dawkins, a Tassie native, started his career aged seven in the little league and progressed all the way up to senior level with the East Devonport Football Club before living in London for five years.

Although he had the occasional social kick over in the old dart, he yearned to play competitively. He moved back to Melbourne in 2011, and although he wanted to join a local SFNL club, his shoulder had other ideas.

There is little doubt with these three that their success with the whistle can be attributed to their careers as players.

“I think it’s good just to have a bit of a feel for what the players going through. I mean, I’ve been out of the game for a while so I’ve probably lost a little bit of touch with it, but I think just having a good kind of idea of

what it’s like to play at a good level and that I reckon it’s definitely helped,” Allison said.

Dawkins agrees. “I think we (ex-players) have a bit more game-sense about us (compared to umpires who have never played the game competitively), we can sort of read the play a little bit better and understand what (the players are) trying to do and not be so technical on every little free kick because you know how hard a game it is to play,” he said.

Fridman said he remembered the qualities he appreciated in a whistle-blower from his perspective as a player, and has since tried to incorporate those same qualities into his own umpiring. This is part of what make him one of the League’s most respected officiators.

“I really appreciated the umpires that had the time to talk to you as a player on the field when the decision’s been made, umpires that really took that extra step and explained their decision and would be really approachable... and that’s something I try to do with my umpiring,” Fridman explained.

And there are many aspects to umpiring at community level that the boys enjoy, not least of all they get the best seat in the house to greatest game of all.

Allison and Dawkins also love maintaining their affiliation with the sport and see similarities between the umpiring fraternity and their football clubs in terms of culture, building friendships and enjoying social activities off the field.

“It’s a really good way to get involved in the sport. It’s a really good culture down at the SFNL Umpires Association… there’s some really good people down there and we always have a good time training,” Allison said.

“We train Tuesdays and Thursdays, which is similar to a football club, we have social functions and get-togethers and stuff like that as well, similar to football clubs. At the end of the day, we’re all similar in that we’re trying to improve our performances and get better,” Dawkins added.

But Fridman also sees several other benefits that far surpass simply having fun.

“It teaches you a lot of life skills in terms of building your confidence, your ability to communicate… you’re always keeping fit. And then there’s a bit of the monetary side of things as well. You actually get paid to do it!” Fridman said.

Umpiring has quickly developed from a hobby to a passion for Fridman, Allison and Dawkins, and all three boys encourage people of all ages to give it a go.

“If you enjoy football and enjoy being around the game, then I’d definitely recommend former players and even officials, anyone that enjoys the football environment, they should get involved,” Dawkins said

DIVISION 3 SENIOR GRAND FINAL

DIVISION 3 RESERVE GRAND FINAL

DIVISION 3: MAN ON THE MARK / ANDREW PALOCZI @Apaloczi

Grand Final

Black Rock vs Mount Waverley Joe Kriegar was involved in the Grand Final action from the first ruck contest and starred throughout the day, helping Black Rock record a 13-point victory against Mount Waverley. Kriegar was a worthy recipient of the Meneilly Medal for best on ground.

The Jets led for almost the entire contest, although it was the Mountain Lions’ Michael Kinsella who had the first goal on the board, despite kicking into a strong breeze.

It was an entertaining match and although Black Rock was on top, the Mountain Lions were still in with a chance in the final term.

When Chris Jeffries booted a goal on the run to cut the margin to 20 points a couple of minutes into the fourth quarter, the game was alive.

However, Brendan Stephenson bobbed up shortly after, marking in the Jets’ forward line and kicking accurately.

To the Mountain Lions’ credit, they quickly responded with Cameron Kirkup snapping a goal.

Lachlan Quirk kicked the Jets’ last major for the day at the seven-minute mark. Black Rock then had to withstand pressure from Mount Waverley.

The Mountain Lions goaled through Patrick Kinsella and, when Ben Beecroft marked shortly after, there was still hope. However, he kicked a behind.

Mount Waverley was 21-points behind and time on was imminent. Still the Mountain Lions strived to bring about a dramatic comeback, but squandered their chances. By the time Patrick Kinsella goaled again, it was too late.

Black Rock put down a good foundation for its win, skipping out to a 27-point advantage by quarter time. But with the aid of a strong breeze, it was hard to know whether or not Mount Waverley would be able to achieve a similar level of dominance in the second term.

Unfortunately for the Mountain Lions, backman Simon Jacobson was hurt during the opening quarter and was unable to take any meaningful part in the remainder of the game.

When the Mountain Lions gathered at the quarter time huddle, coach Jarrod Wilkin stressed the need for them to apply more pressure at stoppages. He also urged them to use what he considered was a four-goal breeze to establish a half time lead.

Mount Waverley was able to close the gap in the second term, but still trailed by 11 points at the long break.

The division’s second-top goal scorer, Mount Waverley’s

Luke Galle, made an early impact in the second half.

He drilled a goal, cutting the Jets’ lead to five points.

Galle surprisingly played at fullback early in the game, where he was matched against the dangerous Adrian Lane.

Galle’s goal proved to be the only score of the third term for Mount Waverley, as the Mountain Lions struggled to deal with the wind and the Jets’ backline.

Black Rock managed three goals for the quarter, with a couple of those coming from the boot of Simon Taylor. This pushed the Jets’ advantage to 26 points with a term to go and they ensured that this was enough, applying fierce pressure in the final term.

Taylor was the leading goal scorer for the premier with three. Jay Williams was named the Jets’ second best player, and kicked a couple of crucial goals early in the game.

Brenton Henry was another excellent contributor for Black Rock, clearing the ball from dangerous positions and totally blanketing Kirkup. His coach, John Burke described Henry’s game as “an absolute blinder”.

For the defeated Mountain Lions, skipper Rich Mathers was their best contributor. Patrick Kinsella was the only multiple goal scorer for the side with two.

Cliff Aikman provided some drive for Mount Waverley after proving his fitness and returning from injury.

Wilkin worked his way into the game after moving into the backline, but was starved of opportunities early in the forward line.

He praised the efforts of his team. “We gave it everything. Everyone played their heart out, we were just not good enough on the day,” said Wilkin.

The Mountain Lions’ coach acknowledged the quality of the opposition. “Black Rock were the best team all year and deserved the win,” he said.

There is no doubt that the Mountain Lions will do everything in their power to go one better next season.

Winning coach, Burke expressed pride in his team and felt the game was played in the right spirit. “It was a really good game of football and to their credit they kept coming back,” he said, emphasising Black Rock’s respect for Mount Waverley.

Burke will not continue as coach next season, and believes it is time for someone else to take charge as the club continues its journey.

Congratulations to the Jets and good luck in Division 2 in 2016.

SFNL RADIO TEAM – THANK YOU!It’s been a big year for the guys in the broadcast van in 2015.

At the end of last year we said goodbye to the Blue ‘Caravan of Coverage’ after we won the AFL Victoria Media Award for ‘Best Match Day Coverage’ in it.

Over the off season while the players and coaches put together their plans for the 2015 season, we worked hard on the state of the art broadcast van, which has not been officially named as yet but it will be next year.

I thank Dan the Van Man for his great work with this great place to work in.

I also thank Thomas Grundy and, while Thomas was away, Kevin Mitchell for towing the beast from ground to ground during the season.

I thank David (Hammers) Hampton for being a great caller and an asset to the team, Johnny Takemura for his work calling the game and Ian (the Wiz) Dougherty for his expert comments throughout the season.

We successfully introduced two new members to the Saturday team. Karl Bianco has done a stellar job as our panel operator and has done all I have asked of him and more. The other new member of the team is Will Hunter as our Boundary Rider. Will has fitted into the role well and made it his own.

I thank Kevin Cummins (KC) for coming off the interchange bench when I asked him to.

Thanks also to Glen McDonald, Mark Seymour, Garry Cranny and Marc Gauci for being around the ground reporters.

On the Sunday Football Netball Show, I thank Wayne Fuller (Bug) for his great work, not only in the studio, but getting great information for us to broadcast. It is a pleasure to watch you work.

It was a sad day when John Bennett said he was leaving

us, for very good reasons, so we had to take find a suitable replacement, we searched high and low and ended up with David Coutts (Coutta) and as a first year recruit just fell short of receiving a Rising Star Award. Thanks for turning up, mate.

Our anchor man Ian (the Wiz) Dougherty has done it again as that is what he does. Well done mate on another great year.

Thanks to Alicia Wise for agreeing to represent the Netball Competition every fortnight. You are a real delight to work with and a champion.

Thanks Karl for your work on this as well; your commitment is outstanding.

For the SFNL TV show a big thanks goes to Ornell Amaratunga for filming the matches and to Tim Harris for your expertise to make the show look great.

I thank all the Coaches, Presidents and Players that have given up their time to be a guest in the broadcast van and studio for the programs to represent their clubs and help make the shows what they are.

I thank 88.3 Southern FM for the belief in us and we know that we are a great fit together and we look forward to your support in 2016.

I thank my family for ALL your patience and understanding while I work to put all the products together and the space you allow me.

Good luck to the teams fighting it out in the Grand Finals.

It is a pleasure and delight to bring you what we do and we hope that you enjoy it and make you feel that you are part of the game.

Cheers,

Robert Sharpe Executive Producer SFNL Radio and TV

The Grand Final has been decided and it will be a fixture between St Kilda City and Hampton at Springvale Reserve on Sunday September 20, 2015. The Saints last week sealed their position in the final with a solid performance over Dingley and would have watched this match with anticipation.

The result? Hampton 10.9 (69) defeated Dingley 5.14 (44).

Dingley had no room for error as there would be no second chances in the do-or-die game. Unfortunately for them, top spot on the ladder failed to guarantee a Grand Final appearance as the Rosellas went down by 25 points.

Wayward kicking was a key feature of the contest – something that was handled much better by the Hammers. Dingley started the better of the two sides with an early seven-point advantage at the first break. Hampton, who’ve had a difficult second half to the season and finals period, managed to earn a half time advantage. The Hammers kept Dingley scoreless and led by two at the main break.

In typical finals pressure, many players were failing to have an impact. After a stellar season, Dingley’s Madison Talarico was finding the contest to be a challenge with most of Hampton’s defensive efforts revolving around limiting his influence. Talarico managed one first-half goal – well below his normal output – but nevertheless understandable given the attention he was receiving. For Hampton, their second quarter run would bode well for the second half of action.

The Hammers took charge during the third term as multiple goals from Michael Lee, and goals from Beer and Gorringe-Dennis ensured a 29-point lead at the end of the quarter. Whilst the goals were crucial in building the lead, Hampton’s team-defense proved to be just as important.

Despite an early goal during the last to reduce the margin, Hampton’s goal after eight minutes restored the lead to the 30 points. Dingley’s desperate surge ultimately failed to change the result as neither side managed to register a goal for the final 14 minutes of the quarter. The Dingoes mustered six behinds during the last portion of the game and would rue not only that period of the match, but their five consecutive behinds prior to half time. It was Hampton’s day and they now shift focus to next week’s showdown with the Saints while Dingley will look to regroup for season 2016.

Under 19 Grand Final – Sunday 20th September, 9:30am

St Kilda City vs Hampton (Springvale Reserve) St Kilda have been the form side of the competition and in their debut season have set some incredible standards. Their opponents in Hampton have had a contrasting campaign, sitting on top of the ladder for the opening 10 rounds before struggling to find form over the last half of the regular season. The Hammers were fortunate that while in a struggle for form, they were able to hold onto a place in the top five. Their steady improvements have led to a shot at the premiership and we will find out whether the week off has aided their preparation. However, if there’s a team that can maintain form despite the week off, it’s St Kilda City.

Prediction: St Kilda by 25

Key Players: Oliver Gabelich (St Kilda City) – Gabelich has always played his role throughout the season, and if St Kilda are to beat the Hammers, he’ll need to perform once more. He stepped up with 3 goals against Dingley in the absence of Xavier Pauli, and I expect him to be just as influential this time around.

Michael Lee (Hampton) – Lee has had an exceptional finals series managing multiple goals in all games. He continues to kick goals in regularly quantity, but the timing of them has also been crucial to ensuring Hampton’s ongoing success during this campaign. If they win, expect him to have an influence.

Ayang Nyanjok (St Kilda City) – At 200cm, AJ is near unstoppable in the ruck. He is very athletic, and leaps high over his opponents to give his midfielders first use of the pill from the centre. He also provides a conspicuous target in attack where he is a nightmare match-up for defenders.

Bunareth Kheng (Hampton) – Kheng has been one of the in-form players

throughout the finals series and has had a super-consitent year. A pacy onballer with great footy smarts, he has

also shown an ability to impact the scoreboard, booting 24 goals so far

in 2015.

Overall, it’s been a stunning season and tense finals campaign. Although regular finals contenders –Bentleigh and Dingley – are missing from the grand final – it should be a cracking finale to a spectacular season. Personally, I can’t wait to be there!

UMPIRE’S CORNER / THE WHITE KNIGHTBest of luck to umpires officiating in Grand Finals today. For those umpires who didn’t get to the “big dance” this year, your turn may come next year. There have been many highlights this season, with Annie Mirabile’s appointment to the first ever live telecast of a women’s football match being a major one.

Our profile in the SFNL has continued to grow and was exemplified by last week’s article in the Record describing our former footballers Kai Allison, Leigh Dawkins and Ilya Fridman who have made the transition from playing football at a high standard to umpiring at a high standard. Umpiring certainly prolongs a person’s on-field involvement in football, as evidenced earlier this year when Neville Gardner became the first SFNL field umpire to achieve the 800 game mark. Neville had been a premiership player with Box Hill Adelphians almost fifty years ago! Younger umpires have also made their mark with Matt Mahoney umpiring Div 1 while still completing VCE, and boundary umpires such as Riley Webster progression to the field with great success.

Your SFLUA Committee has continued to support the Association, with Alan Manning and Rodd Johnson providing strong leadership on and off the field. John Borg has looked after the accounts while Kevin Mitchell has again managed the uniform shop. They have been assisted on the committee by Kaye Johnson, Thomas Grundy and Tayla Manning.

Thanks to Nigel and Carmel Thompson who have once again ably managed our canteen/bar after training each Thursday.

The White Knight thanks the Umpiring Department: Peter Mair, Brad Lowe, EJ, Fraggle, Brett, Garry, JA, Smithie, Troy, Robin, and Scott for their coaching efforts during the year, while EJ, Mark and Ryan have kept us very busy on the track. We also thank our dedicated trainers, Natalie and Rocky, for looking after us so well this year. Thanks must also go to the SFNL Administration. The SFNL CEO, David Cannizzo is a great supporter of the Association, Adam Sparrow, who replaced Matt Duck mid-season as Football Operations Manager has looked after umpiring affairs diligently, and Matt Grimwood, who replaced Toby Jedwab mid-season, has handled all the paperwork and Schedula.

At the Appointments Night on Wednesday, a number of umpires received awards:

The Graeme Bertram award for excellence in umpiring and a strong off-field commitment to the Association went to Kevin Mitchell, who has umpired many double headers in recent years, as well as running our uniform shop, and being heavily involved organising our social functions (he cooks a mean sausage!). The Best Clubman trophy went to Kaye Johnson, who has been vitally involved in organising our social functions this year, while the Most Dedicated Umpire Award went to Mitch Lea who has barely missed a training session.

Other awards were: Golden Whistle award – Matt Mahoney

Best 1st Year Field Umpire – Riley Webster

Best 1st Year Boundary Umpire – Kobe Davies

Best 1st Year Goal Umpire – Sam Rogers

Most Improved Field Umpire – Scott Learmonth

Most Improved Boundary Umpire – Simon O’Loughlin

Most Improved Goal Umpire – Patrick Aurish

Thanks to all umpires who have assisted with doubling up throughout the season, and to those umpires who help out on Saturdays despite being unable to train due to work or family commitments. Thanks also to our club umpires who also play an important role.

There will be nibblies and refreshments at our AGM at 7pm on Wednesday next at Bricker Reserve and we urge all umpires to attend.

Are you interested in becoming an umpire? Come and join us in 2016. If you love footy, you’ll love being an umpire!

The White Knight wishes all umpires a restful off season and hopes to see you all on the training track next February.

Remember that:

SFNL MARK OF THE YEARSFNL FUN ZONE2015 GRAND FINALIST WORDSEARCH!

SPOT SHARPIE!

As season 2015 nears its end, let’s look back at some of the best marks taken throughout the year.

The Executive Producer of the SFNL Radio Team, Robert

Sharpe, always manages to get amongst the clubs’ inner sanctum so we can bring you the very best match day radio

coverage. Whether it’s the theme song or interviews with the coaches, Sharpie delivers

it all.

On Saturday, Sharpie managed to gate-crash the Black Rock party as they celebrated their Grand Final win. Can you spot

him in this photo of the Jets’ change room?

(Hint: It’s our version of Where’s Wally? so we’ve given him

Wally’s famous hat!)

Have you photographed a Mark of the Year contender?
