Oakhurst Neighborhood Association MeetingMonday, August 13, 2012 (the second Monday of the Month) at the Solarium, from 7-8pm

The following board reports were given by ONA President Mike Vajda:The Decatur BBQ, Blues and Bluegrass Festival will be held on Saturday, August 18 from 4-10 pm in Harmony Park. This event is a fundraiser for our grant program, which gives back to Oakhurst. See photos from festival!!!September Jazz Nights begin on September 6. See the website (www.oakhurstjazz-nights.com) for details.

Treasurer Mark Sanders gave an update on the ONA’s finances and an overview of its revenues and expenses.

Community Updates:Officer Speed gave a report on crime in the neighborhood. There have been a few incidents of entering autos. In almost every case, there was a cord plugged into the console suggesting there was an electronic device in the vehicle. A question was asked about whether anything can be done about extremely loud music being played at parties in Oakhurst Park. Officer Speed responded that residents should call the police to report loud music and they will confirm whether the group has a permit and can determine whether or not noise ordinances are being respected.City Commissioner Patti Garrett asked that people watch out for kids going to and from school and to make sure that the sidewalks in front of their homes are clear (of shrubs, etc.) so that children can safely pass on foot or on bicycle. New lights in McKoy softball field should be installed soon. A work session is coming up to look at a draft annexation map to start a conversation. This is very preliminary. Meetings now stream online and are archived.

Pete Whitlock said that he, Brian Clough and Weslee Knapp purchased the com-mercial property at the corner of Mead and College. Pete has been trying to get Candler Park Market to come to Oakhurst but this would require rezoning. They will apply to rezone the lot. The store would be 5,200 sq. ft., about same size of exist-ing market. They are looking to fill gaps in the local market and they are open to suggestions. Pete noted that this could be last opportunity to bring a grocery store

A panel of neighborhood builders and renovators shared their insights and expertise about home construction and home improvement projects, as well as observations about trends in Oakhurst. The participants were Arlene Dean of Arlene Dean Quality Homes, Ali Herriot of Hammertime Construc-tion, Inc., Peter Michelson of Renewal Design Build, and Eric Rawlings of Rawlings Designs, Inc. Eric is an architect. Hammertime and Renewal focus on renovations and addi-tions. Arlene Dean focuses on entire home renovations (rather than individual rooms) and new construction. The participants answered several questions posed by President Mike Vajda and audience members. Mike thanked the panel participants for their time, as well as for the support that each of them has given to the ONA and Oakhurst over the past several years.

Dear Susan,

Am I an enabler?

Here’s the background:  I’m lucky enough to call myself a SAHM.  I have two elementary aged children (2nd and 4th grades) who go to school.  In the summers we have a lot of fun and although we can’t afford fabulous trips, we have a lot of fun playing all summer long.

My husband and I have decided that I don’t need to go “back to work” and I’m enjoying volunteering, keeping house, and taking care of my kids.  But my other mom friends, some SAHMs, some with careers, think I do too much for my kids.  But I don’t want my kids doing chores or making their lunches.  I want to give them the kind of childhood I never had.  I grew up with a single mom and very little money.  I had too much responsibility and not enough fun time.  I want my kids to be able to relax and have fun!  If I’m home, why can’t I just do the work and let them relax before they grow up?

Love My Life,Avondale Estates

Dear Love My Life,

I am sorry you did not enjoy your childhood.  But what you describe for your children may be an example of an overcor-rection on your part.

And now to answer your original question:  You are a loving,well-intentioned enabler.  I hope that didn’t sting too much.I understand that you want the best for your children.  Think about what you’re really teaching your children.  Is it bet-ter for your children to learn to be served or to learn to serve others?  Is it better for your children to learn that they have no responsibilities or to learn how to manage the responsibili-ties they’re given?  Is it better for your children to relax and have fun or to enjoy an authentic, healthy self-esteem for work well-done?

If you continue on your current parental path, you are in danger of creating entitled children.  What is to become of your children when you are no longer doing everything for them?  It is essential that children learn how to clean a home, manage finances, and participate in household responsibili-ties.  These responsibilities allow children to feel a part of their family, to experience intrinsic satisfaction and exhibit an authentic, healthy self-esteem.  And, best of all, they’ll learn how to feel grateful for what they have.

Do your children a favor and give them the gift of limits, boundaries, and responsibilities.  And, by doing so you are also giving society the gift of two responsible, grateful adults who know how to serve others.

Susan

Trees Atlanta Announces 13th Annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale & Festival

Looking for trees and plants to add beauty and shade to your yard? You won’t find a better deal than at the 13th Annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale & Festival. The local non-profit has added more than 88,000 trees to metro Atlanta since its inception in 1985, and each October, Trees Atlanta has a sale that offers more than 1,000 plants – including 200 species of trees, shrubs, native perennials, and tree-friendly vines – for purchase by the public. All proceeds benefit weekly neighbor-hood tree planting projects, helping Trees Atlanta volunteers plant approximately 2,000 trees each year all around metro Atlanta.

The sale, sponsored by Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., will take place at the Trees Atlanta Kendeda Center, located at 225 Chester Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30316 on Saturday, October 13th, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Trees Atlanta donors of $500 or more are invited to attend a preview shopping night the evening before the sale.

The Trees Atlanta Tree Sale gives plant lovers a chance to talk with experts about why each tree is unique, so that mak-

ing the decision on which tree to buy becomes easy and enjoyable, for both the avid planter and the first-time buyer. Shoppers will find oaks, ginkgos, hickories, hollies, dogwoods, redbuds, azaleas, hydrangeas, blueberries, and many more spe-cies and varieties, including selections that attract wildlife and pollinators such as birds, butterflies, and bees.

One variety that is making its first appearance at the tree sale this year is Sheri’s Cloud blackgum, which is a variegated blackgum that was discovered in Arkansas. Another great plant that is always very popular is the paw paw. It’s a small tree with beautiful leaves and delicious fruit. Also available will be Devil’s Walking Stick, which has the largest leaves of any native tree (they’re compound and can be up to 5 feet long!). And if you’re looking for beautiful vines for a trellis or fence, we’ll have several great native options like coral honey-suckle, passion vine, native wisteria, and trumpetcreeper.

In addition to purchasing trees and plants, visitors are in-vited to spend time at the Trees Atlanta Kendeda Center by enjoying the festival. The festival will feature planting and pruning demonstrations, live music, a small sheep petting zoo,

10 7Preventing Break-Ins Through WindowsBy Duncan Cottrell, the Entry Enforcer

While kicking in a door is the most common method of forced entry, windows are also vulnerable, especially when we forget to lock or close them during mild weather. Here are a few things to reinforce them against break-ins. Typical double-hung windows (where the window sash slides up and down) have a pivoting lock where the two sashes overlap. The window lock is attached only with short screws, which pull out easily with a pry bar. An easy solution is window pins—available in a kit from hardware stores—are inserted into a hole drilled through the wood of both sashes. A special tool, which comes with the kit, is used to pull out the pins to open the window. This product works best on wood windows. For aluminum or vinyl windows, an alternative is to use dowel rods placed snugly between the sash and the top of the window jamb (the old broom handle in the patio door track, only vertical). The most effective prevention is fixed metal grilles, or burglar bars. Some people object to the look, but they can be custom designed and painted to match the house to make them nearly invisible. Fire code requires that window bars installed in

bedrooms be easy to open for emergency exit. The cheapest is the cheapest: bars that are hollow bend easily. One of the best products for glass windows and doors is a tough, polyester window security film. It is crystal clear, four mils thick, and is applied from edge-to-edge on the inside of the glass with a super-strong, transparent adhesive. If the glass is broken—like with a brick or baseball bat—the shards won’t fall out. They stay in place because they are bonded to the film, which is too tough to cut or tear. By holding the glass shards in place, the film prevents a broken window from being used as an entry to the home. Very thick versions of security films are used on federal buildings to withstand bomb blasts. Old windows or doors with individual, small panes of glass set between thin wood crosspieces, or mullions, are not good candidates for security film, because the entire small pane can be pushed out and the thin wood mullions will break, but full-light or half-light doors are easily reinforced. Duncan Cottrell, The Entry Enforcer, offers free estimates to make doors kick-proof and window access too difficult to bother with. You’ll also get an objective assessment of how your home will look to a burglar, and expert advice on how to make your home safer. Contact Duncan at (404) 289-6960 or [email protected].

Decatur Clears Way for Craft Beer BrewingWhat’s next? Perhaps a craft distillery.By Ralph Ellis http://decatur.patch.com/articles/decatur-clears-way-for-craft-beer-brewing

The ordinance that now allows craft beer brewing in Decatur may have to be amended to allow a craft distillery.

Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne said Monday night that someone who wants to open a distillery has approached the city.

It’s not allowable now under city ordinances but that’s the kind of business Decatur wants to encourage, she said.

“It’s the new trend,” Menne said.

The city commission voted 5-0 to amend the city zoning ordinance to allow craft beer brewing in the East Decatur Sta-tion area. Three Taverns and Blue Tarp Brewing want to start making craft beer there.

These breweries want to sell beer on the retail level. The amendment will not affect Twain’s, which is a microbrewery and does not sell off premises.

Wylde Center Adds Third Greenspace

In May, the 2304 & 2308 lots on First Avenue located just North of Oakview Road were donated to the Wylde Center by the land-owner.  “We look forward to developing this lot, our first in the City of Atlanta, into a greenspace that the community can enjoy,” expressed Stephanie Van Parys, Executive Director of the Wylde Center.

The Wylde Center, formerly called the Oakhurst Com-munity Garden Project, is a nonprofit organization that grew out of a coordinated effort in Decatur to expand green space, while promoting health, nutrition, and environmental education. This effort began in 1997 with the creation of the Oakhurst Community Garden Project.

The Wylde Center currently manages two garden properties in Decatur:  the Oakhurst Garden, located at 435 Oakview Road, and Sugar Creek Garden, located behind Oakhurst Presbyterian Church at East Lake Drive and Second Avenue..

In addition to these garden sites, the Wylde Center provides environmental and education-based youth outreach pro-grams (including Decatur Farm to School), garden coaching, community-wide education, and events throughout the year.

The Wylde Center will hold public input meetings in 2012 to learn what the community envisions for the new space on First Avenue.  “Expect to see our volunteers and partners working on the property over the summer clearing out the overgrowth and fallen trees,” said Stephanie Van Parys.
