Children’s Health Care During a Time of ChangeThey Know How to Treat My Son“My son Elias has special needs and wouldn’t even sit in the chair at the first dentist we went to see. The dentists at IWS Children’s Clinic sat down with him in the hallway where he was crying, and showed him each tool they would use to clean his teeth. They helped Elias calm down and eventually he let them clean his teeth.

Now, all four of my children come here for medical and dental care. My oldest son was not getting enough sleep and getting into trouble at school because my husband and I are having marriage problems. The clinic social worker helped him talk about his worries, and now we are all talking with a therapist to get the help we need.”

Children’s Health Care During a Time of Change

Dear Members and Friends, As The Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society (IWS) marks another year of accomplishment for the health and welfare of children, we are proud to share our FY 2015 Annual Report, highlighting special moments where we have made a difference for children.

2015 brought major changes and challenges in health care funding and delivery, particularly with state budget cuts and the complexities imposed on service delivery as Illinois moved to a Medicaid managed care model. Yet, our Children’s Clinic provided high quality medical, dental and behavioral health care services to over 3,300 children in 10,286 visits. The amazing stories shared in this report, of families who needed our services the most, substantiate that the demand is greater than ever for childhood health promotion and disease prevention programs.

This year we began an IWS Board and staff process of examining our services and operations with the goal of achieving greater impact and effectiveness. We have expanded our marketing and outreach efforts through our Portable Dentistry and health education programs in area schools. We have forged a new partnership with Pillars to

provide long-term mental health therapy for patients.

We are deeply grateful to those in our community who have opened their hearts in support of our mission—our IWS members, Board, donors, foundations, corporations, volunteers, staff and friends. We are able to continue our commitment to the welfare of children because of your engagement and generosity.

2015 is the eve of our Centennial and plans are underway for celebrating this milestone in 2016. We invite you to join us in this momentous celebration when we reflect upon and honor our past. We remain keenly focused on our vision and look forward to embracing our future with you as we position IWS for our second 100 years of service.

With warm appreciation,

Lynne Williams Elizabeth LippittPresident Executive DirectorOak Park River Forest IWS Children’s Clinic Infant Welfare Society

We Feel Like They Really CareSam and Phyllis needed extra help. They are parents of 11-year-old Brendon who has autism. When Phyllis brought Brendon in for his school physical one day before it was due, our receptionist told her Brandon was no longer assigned to the clinic. Changes to the state Medicaid program had assigned her somewhere else. She panicked. For Brandon, changing doctors would be traumatic.

Our receptionists could see that Phyllis was overwhelmed at the idea of contacting the state to become our patient once again. Our social worker let Phyllis use her office to make the call, and helped her organize the information she would need. They were able to change Brendon’s medical home back to the IWS Children’s Clinic. He started 6th Grade at his new school and hasn’t missed a day of school yet!

“From the first time I learned about the Children’s Clinic, I was drawn to this practice because of the range of care provided. By working here, I’m part of a team that provides integrated medical, dental and social services to families in over 50 communities.”– Dr. Stephanie Weller, Medical Director, IWS Children’s Clinic

Few service organizations have existed for 100 years—in 2016 we hit our century mark. Only a few still have the momentum to plan for the next century. As we celebrate our past record of successful delivery of services, we look forward, with robust excitement, to implementing our plans for the future. After 100 years of planting seeds, the roots of Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society run very deep. We are integral to the community, providing important health care and information, purposeful volunteerism and people-to-people interactions of the most significant kind. We hope you will join us and be part of the celebration!

IWS Changed My Life“I’m heading off to college this year, and I feel really lucky that I’ve been able to come to the IWS Children’s Clinic. At one point, I was so depressed I didn’t know if I wanted to make it to 18. But the clinic helped me with that, and that’s why I’m inspired to study to become a doctor. I hope to one day come back to the Clinic and be one of the doctors taking care of the kids!” – Gabriela, college freshman
