During the 13 most critical seconds of a competition, Jacob Dorion doesn’t think.

The speed-climbing Oak Bay teen lets training take over.

“You don’t think about where you’re putting your hands and your feet. You have to know where you’re going,” the 16-year-old explains. “You’re not thinking. You’ve already thought

about it. You know what you’re going to do.”

His best time for flying up a 15-metre race wall is 12.67 seconds and 7.46s for the 10-metre. Times good enough to snag a spot on the Canadian National Youth Climbing Team.

“There’s something about speed climbing. It’s dynamic. It’s like a 100-metre sprint except with your whole body,” he says.

“It combines that hyper-athletic gymnastics with a head game. It’s almost like a puzzle.”

Like many young climbers on the South Island, he trains with The Boulders team at Stelly’s secondary in Central Saanich. Only about 18 months into competitive climbing, his roots run deeper. Dorion started as a lad clambering along with his dad, an avid climber. In search of a sport to really throw himself into, he opted to give climbing a shot. Now a speed specialist, he doesn’t get home most days until around 8 p.m. He trains at the climbing wall five days a week and hits the gym the other two. Like the lucky leprechaun leading the three-kilometre Mad Hatter’s Fun Run, the prize table is a much-loved tradition.

Leadership students of St. Patrick’s elementary swarmed Estevan and Oak Bay villages in search of top prizes to pick from the table after the fun run this weekend, said teacher Samantha Butler.

Approaching businesses builds on the kids’ public speaking skills, while they gather intriguing items for the table.

“It’s amazing what the kids get,” she says, recounting the year the kids

clamoured to get a little statue donated by an antique store.

St. Patrick’s has organized the race for a few years now, and they continue the other tradition of giving funds raised back to the Every Step Counts program through Victoria Cool Aid Society.

They also collect donated personal items.

“So your entry fee would be $5 and a toothbrush. We also collect

any personal care items like toothpaste, soap and socks,” Butler says. “Victoria Cool Aid Society makes sure the items get to where they’re needed.”

A varying 50 to 100 people of all ages and abilities do the three-kilometre run each year during the Oak Bay Tea

Party. “It follows the parade route right

before the parade and everyone’s there waiting for the parade and it’s very exciting,” she says.

The run starts at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 7 at Windsor Park and follows the parade route. Parents with strollers and babies are encouraged to participate.

Pick up your entry form at Frontrunners, many Oak Bay stores and the school.

A cycling accident put Oak Bay police’s new chief constable Andy Brinton off work for a while.

“He had a very serious accident that put him out of service,” said Mayor Nils Jensen. “He’s expected to be off recuperating.”

The avid cyclist broke a leg while out mountain biking the back trails.

“We’re in good shape here (at Oak Bay Police). He makes contact every day,” said Const. Rick Anthony, community liaison officer. “It’s no different than if he were on holidays for a few weeks.

“And he was wearing a helmet.” [email protected]

Soccer girls kick to third place finishChristine van ReeuwykNews staff

Oak Bay’s senior girls soccer team finished third in B.C.

“I’m ecstatic with third,” said coach Brent Garraway. “It’s a good accomplishment for the girls.”

They lost to Delta in the semi final and defeated Panorama Ridge in the bronze medal game.

Holly Goodacre continued her top-scorer ways with five goals over the tournament. Teammate Caroline Crossley missed the bronze medal game to compete at track and field provincials.

“I definitely wouldn’t be able to do what some of the girls were able to do,” Carraway said, clearly impressed with the players who participated in both provincial competitions held on the same weekend.

With only four returning starters this season, it took some serious teamwork to get to that point. Much of the dedication came from an off-field goal, to raise $10,000 for cancer research.

The team is still tallying the total but fear they may come up shy of that target.

GUEST COLUMN

YOUR VIEW

Last week, I was off duty and walking through one of our beautiful Oak Bay neighborhoods when suddenly the peace and quiet was interrupted by the wailing sirens of police cars on their way to an emergency call.

Of course being a police officer, I wonder what’s going on, where the problem is and hope the attending officers get there safely and are able to help whoever called for assistance.

What I saw as the cars appeared one by one and only seconds apart, was quite troubling. None of the cars that the police vehicles came up behind made any effort to move to the right or yield by any means to an obvious emergency vehicle going Code 3 (lights and sirens).

I could understand it if only the emergency lights were on but the standard siren on the

police cars usually produces 110 to 120 decibels and that should be more than adequate warning. The emergency lights on police vehicles have vastly improved over the past 20 years and now

with high-intensity, multi-strobes and flashing wig-wag headlights, there is no excuse for not seeing a police car coming – if you’re paying attention. If you do see a police vehicle coming up from behind you with all the emergency equipment on, you can be sure it’s for a good reason.

Section 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act states: “On the immediate

approach of an emergency vehicle giving an audible signal by a bell, siren or exhaust whistle, and showing a visible flashing red light, except when otherwise directed by a peace officer, a driver must yield the right of way, and immediately

drive to a position parallel to and as close as possible to the nearest edge or curb of the roadway, clear of an intersection, and stop and remain in that position until the emergency vehicle has passed.”

If you have heard an approaching emergency vehicle and have done the right thing and pulled over or yielded the right of way to them, please remember once it has passed you, to check to see if it’s safe to proceed. Many times one police car or ambulance will be followed by a second one also going Code 3.

Remember that the police car, ambulance or fire truck you yield to could be going to assist someone you know and care about.

Knowing your surroundings and what’s going on around you at all times while you are driving is crucial.

Const. Rick Anthony is Community Liaison Officer with the Oak Bay Police Department.

Make way for emergencies

New OCP may be a developer’s dream

The new Official Community Plan (OCP) draft reads like a developer’s wish list with all the expansion propaganda clichés included.

Given council’s reckless densification proposals, they need to explain how they think they will protect existing residents’ privacy, views and sunlight from these over-developments. They must also explain how their excessive densification plans will maintain Oak Bay’s character. I don’t believe residents understand exactly what zoning policies of this magnitude will mean, what the real impacts will be, and how this will affect everyone.

This OCP development document will open the floodgates to ad hoc, unplanned development and there will be no way to control it – or our growth as a community. The one per cent annual growth figure is particularly deceitful and deliberately misleading. How, for instance, would you restrict the number of applications for duplexes or laneway housing? How would you limit the number of large houses being divided into apartments? Would council tell some owners they can develop and exclude others? The same negative impacts on neighbours by allowing monster houses will occur – only in much larger proportions.

Additionally, no more amenities will be provided to serve the new population – instead new and existing residents will pay increased user fees to contain use of the existing facilities. As we know, basement suites do not pay their way and there is no way, given Oak Bay’s budget and staffing limits, to enforce regulation. If there were, every municipality would do so. Throw in the illegal laneway housing, triplexes, 300 square foot units, etc. and taxes will have to be raised accordingly.

Council’s next step will be to hurriedly change our zoning bylaw to reflect these OCP extensive densification objectives – opening Oak Bay up to rapid marketing of inappropriate, unwanted change. These development initiatives will significantly increase traffic, parked cars, commuters, illegal suites and other structures, noise, service cuts and also substantially increase taxes. All other communities that have introduced these OCP development objectives have experienced these impacts. It has been proven time and time again this type of densification does not lead to prosperity, instead it increases municipal budgets and lowers living standards.

The cornerstone fulfills its role so well it is immoveable.

There for 100 years, the congregation at Oak Bay United considered removing it to access a time capsule planted there when it was placed a century ago. It seems, however, integral to the structure and costly to remove.

“They could find no evidence of a time capsule in there,” added Ken Adsett, co-ordinator of the centennial celebrations. Aside from the cost, the only reference found in their archives indicates the capsule could be anywhere along the corner pillar.

But they’ll still hold a party to celebrate the centennial of placing that cornerstone.

“Well have the normal service in the morning 10 to 11, then move outside under the Dogwood trees,” he said.

“We’ll have a look at the cornerstone, rededicate it, then move down into the back garden for a barbecue,” Adsett said. “Maybe we’ll make our own little capsule and stash it away somewhere.”

They’ll set a “modern record” during services that day welcoming 16 new members to the church.

“Some are coming from other parts of the country and others joining for the first time,” Adsett said.

A number of community leaders and Masons, who were integral in the build a century ago, are expected to attend the June 8 event at Oak Bay United Church, 1355 Mitchell [email protected]

Victoria’s version of the Amazing Race is taking place on June 8 with hundreds of local businesses participating.

The UrbaCity Challenge is an urban adventure race and fundraiser for The Prostate Centre, and this year the course was designed by an Oak Bay native.

Jonathan Willcocks of Vancouver’s Pinnacle Pursuits is thrilled to be at the helm as the “mastermind” behind the event.

“I don’t want to give away too many specifics, but we have so many unbelievable draw prizes … the more people pledge, the higher level of draw prize they’re eligible for,” he said.

Hosted by Maximus Canada since 2010, UrbaCity is marketed as a strategic adventure race that begins at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre and winds its way through downtown to various challenge stations.

Teams of two and four are encouraged to raise minimum pledges to compete, while corporate team categories add to the playful competition.

“There are so many ways to strategize – it makes it super-fun,” Willcocks said.

Teams can choose from brain, brawn or ultra racer categories, while corporate teams can register to face-off against one another.

This year’s race also has a social media component, with pre-race questions being posted on their Facebook page. Willcocks is even taking part personally, posting photos of himself in a variety of Victoria locations.

“It’s kind of a Where’s Waldo, except it’s Where’s Jono?” he said. “The first one to respond gets access to a challenge before the race,” he said.

Contributions last year helped raise $15,000 for Victoria’s Prostate Centre. “This year, we have already achieved

that and doubling,” said Willcocks. “Similar to last year, sponsorships are available at a variety of levels. Each donor level provides an opportunity for your company to contribute, while acquiring extensive exposure and even a chance to involve your employees in a meaningful social cause.”

‘Jono’ as most people still know and remember him, graduated from Oak Bay High as the student council president in 1989. He now lives in Vancouver, but loves being back regularly to share his passion for teamwork, leadership and adventure. UrbaCity is one of many events and projects he still returns to the area regularly.

After graduation, Willcocks spent six years at UVic where he ran the Outdoors Club growing it from 38 members to

450 in three years. Following UVic, he became a wilderness boot camp instructor and life skills counsellor for young offenders before he started Pinnacle Pursuits.

“Having the adventure mind set for life is key. It’s all about embracing unique experiences together that challenge us take a leap of faith, stretch out of our everyday comfort zones, inspires us

to connect with each other in new ways and help make the world a better place. Personally I think this is what life is all about,” he says.

Team’s can register for the UrbaCity Challenge until midnight on June 7. For more information, go to urbacitychallenge.ca or pinnaclepursuits.com.

“He’s very passionate about climbing and he works very hard,” said Kimanda Jarzebiak, chair of the not-for-profit society that runs the Boulders.

At the recent national championships in Montreal, all 12 of the Boulders’ speed athletes earned places in the finals; 10 took home medals. While Dorion finished fourth,

it was only by three-hundredths of a second and a personal best.

As a member of the national team, Dorion plans to attend training camp in Canmore, Alta. the first week of July and has invites to attend World Cup competition on the Pacific Island of New Caledonia and the Pan Am Games in Mexico in November.

“Climbing has one of the best communities, … I feel close to people all over the country,”

he says. “I’ve trained with some of the best climbers in the world.”

Just last week Dorion’s coach Libor Hroza, who hopes to challenge the 15-metre wall world record, flew up the Boulders’ speed wall in six seconds. It wasn’t official or documented, but impressive enough with just his climbers watching. Boulders boasts the highest number of speed climbers on the national team.

“I find it really useful

to train with people who can push me like that,” Dorion says. [email protected]

Safety Tip:As driving conditions improve, many teens hit the road for the fi rst time in the month of June. The type of car your teen learns to drive on can make a big difference – make it a

manageable size, with good visibility and an automatic transmission.

Question of the Week:When Alexandra Straub got ‘Hungary’ in Munich, she drove all the way to Budapest for a home-cooked meal with grandma! How far have you travelled for a home-cooked meal with family? Tell us your story.

Welcome to the driver’s seat

How far would you travel for a home cooked meal?

Munich, Germany – There’s no shortage of places to chow down here in Bavaria but that’s not really what I had in mind. Sometimes you just hanker for some good ol’ fashioned home

cooking and the desire makes distance no object.According to Google Maps, the drive to some tasty yet simple food fare will take approximately six hours and five minutes, and is about 684 kilometres. One way. That’s not including the approximately 8,300 kms travelled to get to Munich, Germany. The destination: Budapest, Hungary, where I’ll have one night to spend with my grandparents – grandma Ilona and grandpa Pál Lencsés.I’ve got the use of a bright red 2015 Audi A3 and a full tank of gas, so why not? Considering I’ll be there less than 24 hours, words like “ambitious” or “motivated” or even “crazy” might de-scribe my reasoning. But heck, if it means I get a home cooked meal, I’d travel all night.Relatively speaking, I’m so close to them. I couldn’t let the opportunity go to waste. And anyone who loves their grandparents’ cooking will sympathize.

Getting me there doesn’t involve security screenings, boarding passes, the hospitality of flight attendants or the company of an Airbus. With my bag tucked away in the trunk, my destination set into the GPS, it was go time. This particular A3 came equipped with Audi’s new MMI Touch with hand-writing recognition infotain-ment system and the MMI Navigation plus. Instead of spelling out the address using the dial and twisting the wrists back and forth, you can just trace out the letters with your finger on the dial’s face. I will warn you, if you have bad penmanship like me, the system might pick up on a different letter than the one you had intended! Regardless, getting the hang of it is relatively easy, and really kind of fun, too.Throughout the drive in Germany, I shaved a few minutes off here and there. The speed limitless zones certainly helped. Perhaps that’s why I opted to take the car rather than fly. A chance to drive quickly – in certain sections - AND get a delicious meal at the end.The A3’s swift characteristics hail from its 1.8L, direct injected and turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. With a healthy dose of 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque, I had everything I needed. The competency of its front MacPherson Strut with Lower Wishbones and 4-link rear suspension with sep-arate spring/shock absorber arrangement at highway speeds is confidence inspiring. It doesn’t waver with the speed and feels firmly planted. And for a small-ish vehicle, that’s always a good thing. The Audi A3 itself isn’t boring by design, but the long

drive is. Especially on the most, direct route. Knowing that I would get to spend some quality time with my grandparents, and the A3, kept me going. With the speed limits decreasing and the flow of traffic consider-ably worsening, I knew I was getting close. It was just nearing dinner. Perfect. Before devouring my grandma’s famous crepes – complete with homemade apricot jam with apricots that grew in their summer home’s backyard. My grandparents tightly embraced me. I’m not sure who was more excited to see whom, though their attention was split between hugs and admiring the red chariot

that brought me to their home in one piece. I can’t blame them. It is quite the sedan in regards to styling. And that colour just can’t be missed. As I walked through the courtyard and along the path to their apartment, I caught a faint whiff of what had been baking throughout the day. I knew that the crepes, and myself, would soon be gone.In this case, you can’t help buy devour yet appreciate the goodness a “home” cooked meal can have. The

family then gathers around the dinner table, says grace, and digs in.Was it worth it? That’s obvious of an answer as is the response to, “Do you want seconds?” The meal was priceless but the 2015 Audi A3 1.8 TFSI has a starting of $31,100.Check out the Question of the Week and if you want more info about the A3, visit www.audi.ca

Quality, cost conscious key to restoration

Mini Superleggera debuts

Our classic and collector car expert continues today with the second part of his four-part series on the res-toration of public relations executive Laura Ballance’s rare 1967 Ford Mustang T5 by 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford.

The restoration business has changed a great deal – in the past, most auto body repair shops would only take on such work when their collision work dried up. Now it’s very specialized work and I’m often asked if I can recommend a restoration shop. To be honest with you, I would be hard pressed to come up with enough names to fill the fingers of one hand.

But I have no hesitation in saying that I doubt there is one in the entire country that restores and builds as many custom cars as 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford.

They control the costs and track the daily progress by using a number of management systems and a Gantt chart. The secret to controlling the work is to perform all of the tasks in-house with perhaps the exception of chrome plating. During my time in the trade, costs would keep mounting up and either the customer or the technician, who worked on a flat rate (piecework) basis, would end up short-changed, resulting in ill feelings between the shop owner, his staff and the customer mainly caused by the lack of communication and too many assumptions.Laura Ballance’s origi-nal plan was to have a sympathetic restoration

performed, replacing only what was necessary. But cars are no different than houses, boats and planes, so when the Mustang was disassembled and stripped they discovered that probably the only thing holding the car together was Laura’s father’s DIY welding! The Mustang is a relatively easy car to restore in terms of obtaining new parts. In this case, by the time the air chisel and plasma cutter was put away the only major sheet metal components left was the roof, “A” pillars, rocker-panels, bulkhead and the two front frame rails and the rear section of the floor. I have heard the expression “better than new” a few times over the years and have often wondered how can it be better than new? But it can. Today’s restorations have improved with the help of new technology such as compression fit welding equipment, seam sealers

and paint products includ-ing epoxy primers, spray on polyester fillers and the waterborne color coats with a clear coat finish. These products are far superior to anything that came off the production line during the ‘60s.Rick Francoeur and his team at 360 always allow the customer to be in control and understand customer needs and expectations, even down to the smallest senti-

mental detail. However, sometimes they have to advise the client for their own benefit, sometimes financial, safety related or future re-sale value. Laura wanted the Mustang refin-ished metallic blue, all the rage during the ‘60s and the car she remembers. But if the car is to retain its value and to repre-sent how it came off the production line as a rare T5, it had to be painted its original Ford Paint Code

Z, an interesting colour called Sauterne Gold Irid. This colour combined with a black interior and vinyl roof will make the car a real eye-catcher.

Next week we will look into the mechanical com-ponent restoration and exterior trim replacement. Nigel Matthews is the director of sales and marketing for Hagerty Insurance Canada.

The Mini Superleggera Vision concept debuted at the recent Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como, in Italy.

The open-top two-seater was created by MINI and Touring Superleggera, the tradition-steeped design and coach building house based in Milan. It

takes the shape of a classic roadster but uses a very contemporary electric drivetrain.

Oak Bay is the best in B.C. as far as boys track is concerned. The team topped provincials while the overall Oak Bay High track team took second, one slim point behind New Westminster. The girls’ side and the junior boys team both finished third in B.C.

“We’ve had a few injuries this year, our best runner is out so we didn’t know what our expectations would be going in,” said coach Mark Sheffer. “We thought we’d be in the neighbourhood but we weren’t sure.”

The team of full-time track and field athletes, those who participate in school track only and those melding with multiple other sports proved a winning combination.

This despite multiple athletes heading back and forth between senior girls soccer provincials, and the track championships in Langley.

“We had eight girls co-ordinating to go back and forth. Some of our best athletes were trying to do that,” Sheffer said.

Grade 10 student Caroline Crossley, for example played four soccer games and ran two 100 metre relays and three 400 metre races over the weekend.

A total of 17 Oak Bay High athletes cracked the top eight standings. Among them are Mick Taylor 400-metre champion, Lucas Petruzelli silver medalist in men’s pole vault and Danika Postle, second in triple jump.

The men’s 4x400 relay was second in the province while the junior boys relay topped the podium with 4x100 gold.

“We tend to do quite well in the relays. We have some success there,” Sheffer said. “It’s a pretty high standard. We’ve won 10 championships in the last 14 years, and come second the other years.”

Boys finish with gold

Oak Bay High’s senior boys rugby team capped a successful season with a fourth-place finish at provincials.

The Barbarians lost the

bronze medal game to Lord Byng of Vancouver.

Captain James Carson was named to the commissioner’s 15 (the rugby equivalent of the all-star team).

It wrapped a great season that saw them capture the seven-a-side Islands, and retain the Howard Russell city AAA rugby champions. [email protected]

Green, freshly cut grass, healthy plants or flowers and generally tidy grounds go a long way when it comes to selling your home.

Says Victoria Real Estate Board president Tim Ayres, typically not one to trot out clichés, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”

The state of a home’s outside property is literally the first thing people notice when they arrive for a showing or a drive-by viewing.

“You can probably get a pass on your landscaping in the winter, but once spring and summer come, everybody notices. It’s a big deal to have a nice-looking property,” Ayres says.

In terms of bang for the buck, spending $200 to $300 on bark mulch and potted plants can be one of the best investments a home seller can make to spruce up their lot, he adds.

Niki Ottosen, owner of Gardener for Hire and a certified horticul-turist, often gets phone calls from homeowners or real estate agents looking for help tidying up homes before they’re put on the market.

“They want a quick cleanup and they want ideas on how to make it look good before they take pic-tures,” she says.

For simple freshen-ups, she advises clients to redefine the edges

of garden beds, spend some time weeding and add some bark mulch to gardens or around plants. “It adds curb appeal and shows people that you take care of your place.”

With people living busy lives and spending precious spare time on

things they enjoy more, not every-one will be interested or motivated to go to town on their yard, Ottosen says.

“What I find is a lot of people find gardening overwhelming. They’re OK doing painting and stuff, but

when it comes to gardening (it seems like) a lot of work. It’s hard work and if you don’t know what you’re doing, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and double your workload. But with a few little trade secrets it can make your work easier.”

Some homeowners don’t know how to get started so they don’t want to get started, she says. “We do know the short cuts and know how to do it really fast. And after, people are very thankful for the help.”

That fact – not to mention Greater Victoria’s mild climate – has helped the local residential and commercial gardening and landscaping industry blossom in recent years.

Ayres, an admitted “non-gar-dener,” has a go-to landscaper he works with on a regular basis for situations where the homeowner may not wish to tackle the job, or on vacated properties for sale that need to be maintained.

While a neat and tidy lot is a must, there’s a fine line between having a nice garden and one that looks like way too much work, he says. “Hav-ing too elaborate a garden might turn some people off. But you might also get someone who sees it as a real plus.”

Ottosen agrees.“When they’re looking to buy a

home, people look for what they have to do. If the gardening part of it is already done, it’s a weight off of them,” she says.

Ayres, the veteran Realtor, leaves home sellers with a simple plan:

“If you’re trying to sell your home this spring or summer, keep your lawn green. Use your watering days.”

SELLING MY HOME?

HomeFinderFind a place to call home

SELLER’S TIP | Check the Better Business Bureau or chamber of commerce for quali ed landscapers

Tidy grounds make a good first impressionScrub away the dirt – Clean moss-covered or stained pathways or concrete areas with a

power washer, and use it on outside walls too, if not

painting the house.Freshen up the colour

– Put a coat of paint on arbors, fences and

gates and other wooden elements to cross that off

the buyers’ to-do listSee your yard from the inside out – View sight lines to the garden and grounds from inside. Place tasteful garden art in prominent places near windows; perhaps colour-co-ordinate the item with

interior decorations.Stage your patio – Set outdoor tables with place mats, and attractive plates and atware, as if guests

were coming over.

The Monterey Centre is looking for giving folks to join the team of volunteers.

If you have a few hours a week (or every other week), they may have just the role for you – whether you would like to commit to a regular shift – or be

a spare. In the food services area,

there are positions in the Fern Café, the Coffee Express and at Henderson Recreation Centre’s Muffin Nook.

Other options that may be of interest include the hostess

role, receptionist position or help with special projects.

Contact Joanne at 250-370-7309 or email [email protected] to discuss volunteer opportunities that may be of interest to you.

Tide pools and sea birds

Low tide at Cattle Point offers an oppor-tunity to view a diverse ecology in tidal pools.

Join Melissa Frey and Gavin Hanke, curators at the Royal BC Museum and expert birder, Geof-frey Newell, and the Friends of Uplands Park to learn how to tread softly on the rocks to find fish, anemones, crabs, and watch birds.

Bring binoculars and wear water shoes/boots to investigate the tide pools using nets and containers.

The event takes place on Sunday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Cattle Point in Uplands Park.

Call Margaret Lidkea at 250-595-8084 or go to friendsofuplandspark.wordpress.com for more information.
