Pastoral Transitions

Each summer brings a number of transitions in the UMC.

Clergy are appointed to new congregations and, likewise,

congregations receive new pastors. Moving brings forth

many goodbyes for the pastors themselves, their families,

and the churches they’ve served. But it also creates

opportunities for each to start again. Isaiah 43:19 (CEB)

speaks words to all those in transition: “Look! I’m doing a

new thing; now it sprouts up; don’t you recognize it?”

The transitioning process isn’t just up to the pastor. Leaders

in churches also contribute to making a smooth transition

process for the church and prepare the way for the newly

appointed pastor to begin well. All transitions ought to be

experienced with much prayer by all involved. They truly can

be periods of time where seeds of new life are planted. The

first several months of a new appointment often set the

whole trajectory of one’s ministry in a new congregation.

We have been in prayer for our new pastor before we even

knew who he was. Don’t stop praying! We have worked

preparing the parsonage. Don’t stop working!

Most importantly, welcome Michael and Joyce with all the

love members here at FUMC Hemphill are known for.

For weeks volunteers and teachers worked to prep the rooms and fellowship hall. Materials were sought and

bought, and eagerly set out in readiness for the children to come.

Doors opened Monday morning and prayers that our congregation prayed to bring children, were answered when 56 children of all ages excitedly awaited the opening activities with Romper, the River Otter. This was the largest number of children to attend the first day of any recent VBS program. That first day was followed by a second and third day with additional enrollees swelling the enrollment to 61, with our average attendance of 56 students over the week. Every year FUMC hosts VBS is a success, and 2018 was no different.

The Rolling River Rampage VBS promised to show the children the Ride of a Lifetime. The program taught God is with us as we find adventure, and acceptance, and joy, and rest, and peace … on the river… that symbolizes our lives. Isaiah 43:2, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you” was the Bible Verse that everything revolved around, and every student or “Rafter” was able to recite that verse early in the week.

In addition to outstanding drama enactments of the five Bible stories where Jesus was the central figure, Rafters also enjoyed excellent science experiments related to water and other natural elements. Crafts, always enjoyable, had many different projects for the variety of ages and abilities; crosses filled with river rock made wonderful mementos of this week. Students were confronted with outdoor activities that involved eye and hand coordination, trusting team players as team competitions took place, as well as just having fun! Reflection time ended the classroom phase as River Guides (teachers and leaders) summarized each day’s focus on the theme of the week.

Two other activities, Snacks and Music were enjoyed by the Rafters and everyone in the fellowship hall. The three-year old self-contained classroom boasted seven excited children eager to learn about Jesus and play at church school. This step-out in Faith for such young rafters lays a wonderful foundation as they age into those who come later. Some of our youth helpers previously came as students and have matured with each succeeding summer VBS program.

This year the Mission Project was tied to the "water" theme as the children were challenged to raise enough money to purchase three water filtration systems for the East District's mission project Water for Haiti. Getting to the root of the problem, money and training to establish sustainable wells rather than sending plastic bottles of water, appealed to the entire VBS family. By the end of the week, $385.88 was raised. Through the generosity of the rafters, VBS staff and FUMC church members, SIX water filtration systems had been provided for, with enough funds to pay for almost half of a seventh filtration system.

The final day of VBS consisted of an abbreviated day of regular activities, a hot dog lunch for Rafters and their parents, and ended with water slides and wading pools. Thanks to the Methodist Men who provided the hot dog lunch prior to the water activity time on Friday. Thanks also to all of the many volunteers and teachers, and to the directors, Janette and George Young, all of whom worked so hard to make ROLLING RIVER RAMPAGE a raging success.

First United Methodist Church of Hemphill will again host UM ARMY (United Methodist Action Reach-Out Mission by Youth http://umarmy.org/) 8-14 July 2018. The objective of UM ARMY is to provide Christ centered missions that serve people in need and promote spiritual growth and leadership development in young adults. The group is coming from various churches in the Houston area again this year. We are expecting approximated 60 in the group, with 30 of them being youth campers. In preparation for their arrival, the refrigerators need to be emptied at the end of our second Sunday fellowship lunch. The storage room also needs to be cleaned prior to that because the girls sleep in that area of the church. Watch your updates for the date and time. Please plan to help with this project.

There are 42 applicants this year. Please be in prayer for the UM Army team that they can assist as many of these applicants as possible. As always, snack foods (cookies and brownies, snack crackers, chips etc.) are always in need when UM Army is here. The members of this church have been very gracious in the past. Surely, this year will be no exception. Keep this in mind as you are shopping during the next week. Donations can be brought to the church. UM Army is a powerful reminder of how wonderful service to others can be. I would encourage each of you to find opportunities to interact with the young adults and staff. Our church will provide meals on Sunday through Wednesday at 6:00 PM. Thank you all for your support and prayers. UM Army hosts a Client Night at 6:00 PM Thursday night, 12 July. Come share the love and blessings with those served. Our community is better for having UM Army.

The Seed Patch After School Enrichment Program Needs Your Help!

We are almost ready to go! As the beginning of a new school year fast approaches, on behalf of the Seed Patch School Board members, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the church body for all of the supportive prayers and help they have given the After School Program throughout the last few months. I know there have been many, and I feel certain we could not have gotten this far without them!

At this time, we are asking for donations of school supplies for the participating students in the Seed Patch Program.

In the sanctuary, there is a small box set up with our supply needs listed on the back of note pages. If you can, please take one or two, and purchase the item that is listed. We do ask to keep the school supply donation to the specific product and brand that is listed on the apple. This will ensure that every participating student has the same quality supplies for their projects. There is a box in the sanctuary you can place your purchased school supplies in.

In the coming months, I ask you to continue to pray for our program implementation, the teachers and the school board as we begin a new school year and continue the mission work here at First United Methodist Church.

Thank you again for all of your support!

Sincerely, Amanda Drennan – Program Director

The parsonage renovation project was completed on time and under budget! Thanks to everyone who helped with the project. Michael and Joyce were very pleased. On June 25, one of the trustees noticed several cars (non-church members) in a short timeframe using our parking lot as a shortcut instead of driving on the road and turning. After discussion and a verbal vote of all trustees, the driveway on the north side of the parking lot will be permanently blocked again. The next Trustees meeting is Monday, July 9 at 5:30pm. Please feel free to attend the meetings. If you have a concern about the condition of the church facility, please let one of us know. The Trustees are: Roger Adams, Arlie Broadaway, Craig Frankum, Millie Garlington, Don North, Wayne Pynes and Chairperson Jean Ann Whittington.

“ …a focus on loving all the children will enhance what God

is already doing through us.” Bishop Scott Jones
