AUCTION ITEMS WILL BE ONLINE BEGINNING MARCH 4, 2014 Providing Students Opportunities to Change Communities Across the Country Law Career Services sponsors the ONU Public Interest Auction annually, encouraging students, faculty, alumni and friends of the law school as well as those in the community to attend and donate items to the auction to help support legal aid in the public sector. The proceeds from the Auction fund the ONU Law Career Services Fellowship Stipends. Since 1994, ninety-seven ONU law students have been awarded an ONU Law Career Services Fellowship Stipend of $1000 for volunteering in an unpaid summer legal position. The auction has funded as many as ten fellowships annually. Typically, 40-50% of the students applying for the stipend are awarded. A committee of ONU law faculty and admin- istration select the students. Student’s applications are evaluated by their past involvement in public service and/or their desire to continue their law career in the public sector after graduation from law school. Law students interested in public service are encouraged to apply for the stipends in Law Career Services. Students must also obtain their own internship. Students should begin contacting public interest employers and applying for unpaid positions working in summer programs across the country as early as possible. Many government agencies, private sector firms, businesses and organizations sponsor public interest intern- ships in the legal field for law students interested in careers in the public sector. Students may choose to search for public interest positions under the “Law Employment Links” tab on the Law Career Services “Current Student’ webpage. (See other application information in this brochure.) ONU law students receive the stipends after their employers verify their acceptance into a program and contact ONU Law Career Services. Students chosen will receive the stipend by the second week of June. Students must agree to return to ONU in the fall or return the stipend. They also cannot receive college credit for the position. Law Career Services sponsors the ONU Public Interest Auction

Faculty, students, staff, alumni of the university and others in

the community are invited to participate in the auction by

donating items, attending the luncheon and bidding. The

luncheon preceding the auction is complimentary, but cash

donations are always appreciated.

This program has been designed to encourage participation

from everyone in the community as well as alumni, friends of

the college, faculty, staff, students, public interest employers

and organizations—every individual interested in helping our

community. This event offers fun and excitement, good food

and education incentives for students who support Public

Interest programs across the nation. It also offers the com-

munity an opportunity to meet and network with our law stu-

dents as they help in this worthy endeavor.

Thanks to many friends of the law college the list of

items auctioned increases and is more interesting and

appealing each year.

ONU PUBLIC INTEREST STUDENT FELLOWSHIP

Application and Selection

A public interest position is defined below:

1. A non-profit organization or legal aid office that represents clients

e.g. poor, elderly, minority, handicapped & other groups/interests

who lack the funding for legal representation.

2. A government agency including public defenders, prosecutors,

civil rights or consumer rights groups.

3. Clerking for a judge and not receiving college credit or

any other remuneration for the position.

Public Interest Commitment: A principal criterion for selection is a

demonstrated commitment to a public service career. A number of

factors, including participation in public interest activities as an under

graduate as well as in law school or a desire following college may

demonstrate this commitment. Applicants receive consideration who

may not have amassed a substantial public interest record but who

have demonstrated their commitment in other ways and/or have ex-

plained the circumstances that have deterred their participation in

such activities in the past.

Application Process: Interested students must submit an applica -

tion to the ONU Office of Law Alumni and Career Services. The

application is two pages including two essay questions. A resume

and references may also be submitted with the application. Anyone

receiving credit for a summer public interest internship, cannot

also receive one of the Public Interest stipends.
