Dear Friends: During this holy season of Advent, we practice prayer and charity in a extraordinary way. We thank you for your presence at Sunday Mass and your participation in our Giving Tree which benefits our sisters and brothers in need. We thank our Ministry For Those In Need for their generous love in coordinating this effort. Through a benefactor we will be able to place a new illuminated and dynamic sign at the entrance of our Church property. This sign will be a window into our parish community. There is no cost to our parish for this sign and a tremendous gift so that we may invite others in our city to participate in our prayers, charity, and many activities. It will be installed soon. God bless this anony-mous donor and our wonderful parish. Wednesday, December 12, is our patronal feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Bishop Martin Amos retired bishop of Davenport, Iowa will preside at the Eucharist at 6.30 pm and our fiesta will follow in our parish hall. Please join us as we honor our Lady of Guadalupe and our parish. Please pray this message of Pope Paul VI as we venerate our Lady on her feast:

(from L'Osservatore Romano, 18 October 1970)

The best homage to Mary: loving God and neighbor Beloved sons and daughters, we wish to unite our voice to that filial hymn which the Mexican people raise up today to the Mother of God. Devotion to the most holy Virgin of Guadalupe must be for all of you a constant and specific demand for authentic Christian renewal. The crown which she expects from all of you is not so much a material one as a precious spiritual crown, shaped by a profound love of Christ and a sincere love of all: the two com-mandments which sum up the gospel message. The same most holy Virgin, with her example, guides us on these two paths (love of her Son and all of our brothers and sisters). The Virgin exhorts us to make Christ the center and summit of our whole Christian life.

This is what the Virgin of Guadalupe asks of you today: fidelity to the Gospel, of which she knew how to be the most eminent exam-ple. Upon you, dearly beloved sons and daughters, we implore with confidence the maternal benevolence of the Mother of God and Mother of the Church, in order that she may continue to protect us and to direct and impel it more and more along the paths of pro-gress, communal love, and a peaceful life together.

The Liturgy of the Word

* 1st Reading: Baruch 5: 1-9 *

Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning and misery; put on the splendor of glory from God forever: wrapped in the cloak of justice from God, bear on your head the mitre that displays the glory of the eternal name. For God will show all the earth your splendor: you will be named by God forever the peace of justice, the glory of God’s worship.

Up, Jerusalem! stand upon the heights; look to the east and see your children gathered from the east and the west at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that they are remembered by God. Led away on foot by their enemies they left you: but God will bring them back to you borne aloft in glory as on royal thrones. For God has commanded that every lofty mountain be made low, and that the age-old depths and gorges be filled to level ground, that Israel may advance secure in the glory of God. The forests and every fragrant kind of tree have overshadowed Israel at God’s command; for God is leading Israel in joy by the light of his glory, with his mercy and justice for company..

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Response * Psalm 126: 1-2ab, 2cd-3, 4-5, 6

Tony E. Alonso

1. When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion, we were like men dreaming. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with rejoicing. ♫

2. Then they said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad indeed. ♫

3. Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the torrents in the southern desert. Those that sow in tears shall reap rejoicing. ♫

4. Although they go forth weeping, carrying the seed to be sown. They shall come back rejoicing, carrying their sheaves. ♫

* 2nd Reading: Philippians 1: 4-6, 8-11 *

Brothers and sisters: I pray always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Verse: *

Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths: all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

( Luke 3: 4, 6 )

* Gospel: Luke 3: 1-6 *

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert. John went throughout the whole region of the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah: A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord!

December 9, 2018

When you hear a good storyteller, you hear a person who sets the scene and time so as to transport you into the story. It can be a simple an opening as “Once upon a time,” but however the storyteller begins, we know we are about to be told something we want to hear and to be in the story while it is told. The formal tone of today’s Gospel passage helps us to relax into hearing our history as Christians in a way that reminds us of God’s plan for us. We see that John the Baptist is an important part of this plan – as were all the people who came before. Nothing done by God is done by accident. As we all well know, John is the man who announced not just the coming Christ, but that the Messiah we awaited had arrived! By naming the locations and the use of Isaiah’s prophecy, the storyteller underscores the importance and brings us the wonder and awe and the understanding of the immensity of the moment. As I read this Gospel passage aloud, I was filled with anticipation. I was thereby prepared to sit and listen to more, to dwell on the story to come, to live in it, consider the meanings, and be filled. So, as we approach the birth of our Savior, let us savor the story and dwell in the moments revealed by this great storyteller. » Spend some time considering the art of the story. When

was the last time I was transfixed by hearing a story? Can I recall the story times when I was a child? When did I practice the art of telling a story? How did I build the anticipation and the sense of wonder to my listeners? Today I will pay special attention as the Gospel is read at Mass, then when I return home, I will use all the skills I possess to read the passage aloud with all the emphasis and importance it holds.

» After hearing the story and reading it aloud, what did I hear? What more do I want to hear? Did I find the need to listen to more? If so, it may be a good time to read the nativity stories as told by Luke and Matthew and contemplate them. If I did not, what more do I need to do to build the story.

» After this, I will sit in the scene in silence and let God lead me where He will to form my prayer. I will share this with those around me so that we can all be led into our heritage with wonder.

~Written by Spiritual Life Committee Member, - Karen Zeleznik

Please pray for the family of Walter Kisley (husband of Eva), James Payne (husband of Doreen) who recently passed from this life. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

CONCERT OF CAROLS

Christmas Oplatki

For many, the tradition of Oplatki holds a significant meaning in the celebration of Christmas. What better way to share a Christmas blessing between you and your family. Oplatki Wafers are now available in the Parish office for $3

or two for $5 (4 wafers per envelope).

The December issue of the Catholic Update is entitled “The Origin of Christmas Traditions - A Window To Our Faith” written by Christopher M. Bellitto, PhD, a professor

of history at Kean University in Union, NJ. His latest book is Ageless Wisdom: Lifetime Lessons from the Bible. In this issue we are reminded that each December we automatically do things that say “Christmas: but don’t always know why. There are four reminders. “An Ordinary Day Turned Holy, “The Roots of Christmas Trees and Plants,” A Living Legacy,” and Christmas: A Melting Pot of Cultures.” Like Mary, the Church shows to everyone the “sign” of God: the Child whom she bore in her womb and to whom she gave birth, yet who is the Son of the Highest, since he ‘is the Holy Spirit’ (Matthew 1:20). Keep the faith and pick up your personal copy. Nancy Freibott, Pastoral Minister
