Sometimes persons are so familiar and well known that their first name is sufficient. Two saints of this last century are like this: Padre Pio and Mother Theresa. Even the prefix Saint is not need- ed! They were indeed saints all of their lives. The humble beginnings of Padre Pio allowed him to enter into familiarity. He grew up a humble young man near the dirt on a farm in Italy! This allowed him to be one with all. The beginnings can influence the rest of our lives. This certainly was the case with Padre Pio. Christ desired him to be a priest and a Capuchin. This is what happened. As a priest, he has shown forth Christ the good shep- herd. He had a great love for those who were lost: the sinner, the poor and the sick because he identified with them. His holiness was not in his ability to stand aloof from his people but in willing- ness to enter into their sufferings and the sufferings of his Lord Jesus Christ. Soon after he was ordained a priest he had an experience in prayer before the cross. At first, this prayer was filled with extreme peace and even pleasure. But, soon pain came to his hands, his feet and his side. These areas of his body began to bleed and did so the rest of his life. He was literally pinned with Christ on the cross. He received the grace of the cross, the stigmata. He had a great love of the sacraments especially the Eucha- rist and Penance. In these rituals, he met his Lord and his people. He found solace in celebrating Mass and in bringing mercy and reconciliation to the sinner. He established a hospital by the mon- astery where he lived his entire life. It still stands today as a model for holistic healing. The last time he celebrated Mass on September 22, 1968, the stigmata disappeared. He died the next day. He was canonized in 2002. Pope John Paul II had the privilege as a young priest to celebrate the sacrament of Confession with him. John Paul claimed that Padre Pio told him he would be Pope! What can we learn from Him? A desire for Prayer… He spent intimate times in deep prayer with Jesus. Through prayer he allowed Jesus to take control of his life. A Compassionate Life… We need to meet Christ in the suffering. A Spirit of Hope… Nothing, rejection, suffering, even death can interfere with our union and destiny with the Lord. So we with Saint Padre Pio can say: Pray Hope and don’t worry!

Dear Friends, Monday evening at 6.30 pm Mass we will gather on the memorial of St. Padre Pio to honor this great saint of the twentieth century. “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.” - - - Padre Pio followed this path of the Lord for us and for his be-loved Jesus. Sometimes persons are so familiar and well known that their first name is sufficient. Two saints of this last century are like this: Padre Pio and Mother Theresa. Even the prefix Saint is not need-ed! His holiness was not in his ability to stand aloof from his people but in willing-ness to enter into their sufferings and the sufferings of his Lord Jesus Christ. He had a great love of the sacraments especially the Eucha-rist and Penance. In these rituals, he met his Lord and his people. He found solace in celebrating Mass and in bringing mercy and reconciliation to the sinner. He established a hospital by the mon-astery where he lived his entire life. The Liturgy of the Word

* 1st Reading: Amos 8: 4-7 *

Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land! "When will the new moon be over," you ask, "that we may sell our grain, and the sabbath, that we may display the wheat? We will diminish the ephah, add to the shekel, and fix our scales for cheating! We will buy the lowly for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals; even the refuse of the wheat we will sell!" The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I forget a thing they have done!

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Response *

Psalm 113: 1-2, 4-6, 7-8 Scot Crandal

1. Praise, you servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD. Blessed be the name of the LORD both now and forever.

2. High above all nations is the LORD; above the heavens is his glory. Who is like the LORD, our God, who is enthroned on high and looks upon the heavens and the earth below?

3. He raises up the lowly from the dust; from the dunghill he lifts up the poor to seat them with princes, with the princes of his own people.

* 2nd Reading: 1 Timothy 2: 1-8 *

Beloved: First of all, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth. For there is one God. There is also one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as ransom for all. This was the testimony at the proper time. For this I was appointed preacher and apostle — I am speaking the truth, I am not lying —, teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

It is my wish, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument.

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Verse: * Though our Lord Jesus Christ was rich, he became poor,

so that by his poverty you might become rich. ( 2 Corinthians 8:9 )

* Gospel: Luke 16: 1-13 OR 10-13 *

[Jesus said to his disciples,] "A rich man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his property. He summoned him and said, 'What is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward.' The steward said to himself, 'What shall I do, now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me? I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg. I know what I shall do so that, when I am removed from the stewardship, they may welcome me into their homes.' He called in his master's debtors one by one. To the first he said, 'How much do you owe my master?' He replied, 'One hundred measures of olive oil.' He said to him, 'Here is your promissory note. Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.' Then to another the steward said, 'And you, how much do you owe?' He replied, 'One hundred kors of wheat.' The steward said to him, 'Here is your promissory note; write one for eighty.' And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently. "For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. [The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones. If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours? No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon."]

neighborhood little ones from the safety of OLG’s parking lot. So start thinking of ghoulish fun décor ideas for YOUR trunk. There will be plenty of treats and fun! Watch the bulletin for more details as the event draws nearer.

Reading Reflection for September 22, 2019 Amos 8:4-7

1 Timothy 2:1-8 Luke 16:1-13

Our first two readings this week speak to us about being honest and loving to all of God’s people. We are called to respect and care for everyone we encounter as a child of God. In the first reading Amos describes the situation of how the rich cheated and oppressed the poor. He gives a stern warning for all of us that the Lord sees all that we do and that He will not forget how we treated His people. In Saint Paul’s letter to Timothy, he instructs us to pray for all peoples, even those we may not particularly care for. The fact that our Heavenly Father wants all of his children to sit at his banquet table, gives us the responsibility to assist all peoples on their journey through prayer and petitions. In the Gospel passage Jesus praises the steward not for his dishonesty, but for his prudency and resourcefulness. We need to act similarly with regard to our faith, not allowing obstacles to overwhelm or discourage us, but use them to strengthen our relationship with God. Jesus also tells us we need to be trustworthy in all aspects of our life. If we cannot be trusted in small matters, then we cannot expect to be trusted in important ones. Finally Jesus tells us we cannot have two masters. The desire for wealth and power that enslave a person will only lead to destruction. It is only when we make Jesus our lord and master that we will gain eternal life. Heavenly Father, help me to treat everyone I encounter as one of Your children. Help me to treat each person with dignity and respect. May I understand that all of my possessions are a gift from You. Give me the courage to share these gifts with others and not hoard them for myself. Please bestow on me the graces I need to make you the master of my life. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (C.L.O.W) Family Connection Luke 16:1-13 Talk with your children about some things that they have done to show that they can be trusted. Talk a bit about what it means to be responsible. Responsibility often means that we put aside something of passing value for something of greater value. Read together the short form of today's Gospel, Luke 16:10-13. Talk about the importance of responsible use of money and our material possessions. As a family, commit to one action that you will take this week to show that your family serves God and not money.
