IN JOY & SORROW with Fr. BillSwichtenberg
This article title in The New Yorker caught my attention: “The Seductive Confinement of a Weighted Blanket in an Anxious Time.” Along with apps like Calm, Nature Melody, and Environment, the weighted blanket has become a hot item during these days of the global pandemic. I must admit that when we began”sheltering in” in mid-March, I experienced some difficulty in falling asleep. Watching too much news was creating an interior worry and panic that kept me awake. For those of us who are empathic by nature, we tend to experience personally the suffering of others. I often find myself tearing up (almost crying) as I watch the stories of those beautiful people who have lost their precious lives to the coronavirus, while their loving families had to accompany them virtually as visiting a loved one in the hospital was not possible.
Still I have to limit the amount of time that I watch updates on the pandemic on TV news.
Perhaps you have a weighted blanket. I must confess that I do. While I find them too hot to place on my bed in the summertime, I do enjoy bringing out my heavy blanket in the fall, and keeping it on my bed through the winter months and even into spring time. Studies suggest that a weighted blanket, or a weighted vest for anxious dogs and cats, provides a “grounding technique” and facilitates “engagement in the act of nurturing one’s self.” Some manufacturers of these blankets went as far as to claim that insomnia, post-traumatic stress, obsessive compulsion, and attention deficit/hyperactivity could be eased by covering one’s self with a heavy blanket. These claims were a stretch and manufacturers were asked to refrain from making them.
I can say that I like my weighted blanket. Maybe it lessens the amount of tossing and turning I tend to do throughout the nighttime. I maybe should get it out on these anxious days!
When I reported to Bishop Ricken that I was having trouble falling asleep back in March, he sent me a little statue of the sleeping Saint Joseph, suggesting that I place my prayer intentions, written on a slip on
paper, under the little statue resting on my nightstand. I appreciated his loving concern but am not too sure that Saint Joseph has helped me to sleep better.
More than a weighted blanket or a statue, I find that having a prayer on my lips as I first lay down at night helps me. Often I pray the Jesus Prayer again and again: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Or this mantra that is a gift to me personally from the Lord, and that I often pray while driving, as well: “Jesus, you are my Rock, my Refuge, my Way, my Truth, my Beauty, my Goodness, my Life, my Light, and my Love. You are my Mercy, my Peace, my Strength, my Shield, my Song, my Salvation, and my All.” Over and over and over, I pray this. Or, “Lord, into your Hands, I place my life.” Or, “Let it be done to me, Lord, as you say.” Or simply, “Jesus, I love you so very much!” Or “Jesus, I trust in you.”
Saint Paul spoke often about “praying without ceasing.” I suspect that committing to memory a simple, short prayer that can almost be playing in the background of our everyday lives may have been what he meant. Maybe praying without ceasing is all about being constantly attentive to the closeness of the Lord to you and me throughout the day and the night.
Finally, remember that the deepest prayer is beyond words and thoughts. This contemplative prayer is simply resting in the Lord’s presence - letting his presence and peace just wash through you. The human heart is truly the Temple of the Indwelling Holy Trinity. Maybe daily resting in the Lord will help all of us sleep better through the night!
