Fourth Sunday of Advent Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church December 24, 2017
From the Pastor:
In 2014, Pope Francis said on Christmas Eve:
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined” (Is 9:1). “An angel of the Lord ap-peared to [the shepherds] and the glory of the Lord shone around them” (Lk 2:9). This is how the liturgy of this holy Christmas night presents to us the birth of the Savior: as the light which pierces and dispels the deepest darkness. The presence of the Lord in the midst of his people cancels the sorrow of defeat and the misery of slavery, and ushers in joy and happiness.
We too, in this blessed night, have come to the house of God. We have passed through the darkness which envel-ops the earth, guided by the flame of faith which illumi-nates our steps, and enlivened by the hope of finding the “great light”. By opening our hearts, we also can con-template the miracle of that child-sun who, arising from on high, illuminates the horizon.
As Advent comes to an end and we begin the octave of
Christmas, take !me to gaze on the infant Christ and His
Holy Family and see what love God has for us. This humili-
ty, this gi" of the Divine Himself which is the greatest gi"
we receive in the Eucharist, is God’s mercy for us. Bask in it
with joy. In the busyness of tradi!ons, don’t miss Christ.
Stay with Him for a while. We celebrate Christmas so we
will be further converted to His love.
With love and Prayers, Fr. Francis
The Children’s
Corner
This is a Sunday to really spend !me to
ponder with Mary, her “yes” to God.
God’s message to Mary: ‘be not afraid,
you have been blessed by God and you will have a son
named Jesus’. Mary was troubled by the meaning of this
message. She opened her heart, ques!oned how the mes-
sage would be fulfilled, and responded with her whole being
to God: I am the servant of the Lord! Let it be! Mary would
give up everything for a greater honor. God would be her
strength. For nothing is impossible with God. How does God
strengthen you? What is your gi# to Jesus? Do you get anx-
ious, excited, or scared when you are surprised? Christmas
will soon be here. We’ll get presents, good food and lots of
hugs. But, remember what Christmas really means. We wait
for Jesus, just like his mother did a"er she said “yes” to God.
How can we say “yes” to God this Christmas? How can we
make this holy season be$er for others?

Christmas Giving to our
Parish
This year’s calendar brings the unusual situa!on where Christ-mas Eve is a Sunday with both Sunday and Christmas Vigil Masses. Christmas Day then falls on Monday. Your weekly generosity, for which we thank God daily, enables us to meet our obliga!ons and address regular parish needs.
Our special, annual Christmas Collec!on, how-ever, fills a very important addi!onal role. Just as is the case with your own home, the Christmas Collec!on pro-vides the resources needed to support major mainte-nance projects in our parish home, Our Lady of the Sa-cred Heart, as well as allowing us to have a reserve of funds available for unexpected and o$en costly emer-gencies.
Please use BOTH envelopes that are found in your pack-et or be sure to add Christmas Dona!on to your on-line list and be as generous as you can.
God Bless You !
OLSH supports People to People With weekly dona!ons, the generous people of the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart parish are regular supporters of the food pantry at People to People, our local source of food for the needy in our community. During the holiday
season the need for non-perishable food is even more cri!cal.
As you make your own prepara!ons for the holiday , please remember our brothers and sisters who struggle daily with feeding their families and be as generous as you can. Your dona!ons can be le$ in the large carton at the rear of the church. God Bless you for your generosi-ty.

CHRISTMAS LETTER FROM FR.
FRANCIS
My beloved parish family,
I begin this letter with a personal wish for all of you for a joy filled Christmas and
Spirit filled new year. I also want to thank you all for your prayers, support, appreci-
ation, Christmas greetings and gifts - and above all for the joy you bring to Our Lady of the Sa-
cred Heart parish community. I am so grateful to God for placing me as your pastor, being loved
by you and being able to love you in return. You truly bring tremendous joy into my priestly ministry.
As we come close to the end of this year and beginning of another, I am awed by the num-
ber of blessings and graces God has brought into our parish community. Time has gone by so
quickly! I have started my 4th year as your pastor.
Reflecting back on this year it is a joy to recognize that God has blessed our parish commu-
nity with 45 newly baptized beautiful children. We buried 42 beloved parishioners, married 6 loving
couples, confirmed 68 adolescents, and 56 children received First Holy Communion. This is truly a
sign of our parish growth in strength and unity.
Our Chapel holds a special place in the hearts of so many of our parishioners, filled with un-
forgettable, personal memories. I am so happy to say that with your help and support we have suc-
cessfully completed the interior renovation. It turned out to be a most beautiful house of prayer
and we have received many compliments and appreciative comments. I am thankful and grate-
ful to God and all of you for your generous contributions and prayerful support.
This year has been a special year of blessings, too, for our ORATORIAN FATHERS as we
marked our 10th Anniversary at a beautiful Mass celebrated by Timothy Cardinal Dolan on August
22, 2017. We are so thankful to God for your love and support and for His continued blessings and
graces upon the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri.
As a parish community, we have many things to be thankful for. In addition to the many ex-
isting parish ministries which continue to bless us with their service over all these years, the Liturgy,
Learning and Outreach Committee is doing tremendous work, among other things collaborating
with Helping Hands to provide essential supplies for the homeless, and developing our Month of Re-
membrance in November which was such a comfort to so many of our families. The St. Monica
prayer group has also celebrated it’s second anniversary, meeting weekly to pray for our chil-
dren . Its very important to have them pray for our families. The Prayer Shawl group joins them in
prayer as they lovingly create comforting shawls and blankets for those among us in need. Without
prayers we are so weak and all our activities are worthless. “Voices of Ruth” is our newest ministry
reaching out to those in the parish who are alone through the death of a spouse, divorce, or sepa-
ration.
Around 50 people were part of the recent pilgrimage organized by the Oratory to the Ho-
ly Land. Traveling to the place where Jesus walked and taught, they took this opportunity to
pray for the Oratory members and the mission and people they serve including our beloved par-
ish in Tappan. We thank God for an enjoyable visit and safe return.

( Fr. Francis Christmas letter cont’d)
Thank you for your financial support for our Parish, especially in our Christmas collection. I truly
appreciate your generosity. On-line giving is an initiative begun this year which is vital to the parish in
that it provides for a regular, predictable income as well as simplifying your life. If you have access to
a computer, please go to our web page to enroll. If you don’t and would like to have your weekly
donation sent from either your checking or savings account, or paid by credit card ( earning points
for your next vacation!) just stop in the Parish Office and we will be happy to assist you.
I would also like to encourage you to use modern technology and social media such as our
parish website, Facebook, flock note, etc. to be on top of what’s going on in our parish. Weekly Bulle-
tins are always posted on the webpage as is the current parish calendar. It will help all of us to short-
en our announcements.
God willing, in 2018, we would like to invest time, talent and resources in our Religious program
and help our children grow in their faith and come closer to Jesus.
I will end this Christmas letter by inviting you to give each other the most beautiful gift of Christ-
mas in the words of Saint John “love one another, because love is from God and God is Love”. As a
token of our appreciation please accept the gift of Matthew Kelly’s newest work, Perfectly Yoursellf:
Discovering God’s Dream for You, a beautiful book about accepting God’s invitation to become the
person He created you to be which will be distributed at all Christmas Masses.
I love you all with all my heart and…once again I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Joyful Hap-
py New Year! As our Blessed Mother was full of grace so also let us always be open to receiving His
Grace in this coming New Year 2018.
With my love and prayers, Fr. Francis
