Zealand Opera

Stuart Maunder

General Director

Here at New Zealand Opera, we’re determined

to celebrate the “New Zealand” bit. There are an

incredible number of extraordinary Kiwi singers out

there on the international operatic stage, and we as a

company need to do more than admire their successes,

we need to give them a voice - literally - here at home.

The 2018 season sees the return of an unprecedented

number of New Zealand singers to their home shores,

showcased in repertoire specifically chosen for them.

Joined by some of the finest singers the rest of the world

has to offer, they’ll bring us a year of stories of young

love, in all its agony, ecstasy and wonder.

First up, from the creator of West Side Story, and based

on the classic novel by Voltaire, Leonard Bernstein's

comic masterpiece, Candide. A collaboration with

Auckland Arts Festival celebrating Bernstein’s centenary,

this “best of all possible worlds” comes to life as a

special event in the sumptuous surrounds of the Auckland

Town Hall. A great cast, led by Australian Show business

legend Reg Livermore as Voltaire/Dr Pangloss, face

an evening of ever-increasing catastrophes. Bernstein’s

score, all audacity and brilliance, will be played by the

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra under our Director of

Music, Wyn Davies.

In Winter, Wellington and Auckland will ring to the

glories of Donizetti’s delightful The Elixir of Love, chosen

to showcase the New Zealand operatic debuts of Pene

Pati and Amina Edris. The real-life husband and wife

duo will bring their trademark charm to Simon Phillip’s

production of this bittersweet romantic comedy, which

will also feature veteran Conal Coad and newcomer

Morgan Pearse. Wyn Davies will conduct.

In September/October we are proud to present a new

production of Puccini’s timeless La bohème. This entirely

fresh take revels in the youthful passion and heart-

breaking intensity of the opera. We’ve assembled a

brilliant Antipodean cast from recent graduates of some

of the great opera houses and training institutions. New

Zealanders Thomas Atkins, Marlena Devoe, Amelia

Berry, Julian Van Mellaerts, James Ioelu and veteran

Richard Greager, join Australian Nicholas Lester, in

Puccini’s masterpiece. This new production marks the

mainstage directorial debut of Jacqueline Coats, and

is conducted by Tobias Ringborg, so brilliant with our

Tosca in 2015.

And speaking of Tosca, Christchurch will experience

Puccini’s ‘blood and thunder‘ thriller featuring two

of Canterbury’s favourite sons: Simon O’Neill and

Teddy Tahu Rhodes. These operatic superstars will vie

for the love of the same diva, the incomparable Orla

Boylan. One of New Zealand Opera’s most acclaimed

productions of recent years, Tosca will be conducted by

Marco Guidarini.

Our second Christchurch exclusive is Opera in the Vines,

a venture with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. We’re

delighted to collaborate with CSO for the first time for

this glorious evening of music at Pegasus Bay Winery.

And finally, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and New

Zealand Opera have proudly collaborated for the past

two years to bring some of the great operatic works

to the concert stage. In 2018 we bring you that most

monumental of operas - Verdi’s Aida.

So welcome to our 2018 season; a season of young love

at its most thrilling, maddening and heart-wrenching.

There’s more variety of operas, more Kiwi singers

returning and more of the best guest singers the world

has to offer. And there’ll be tears, lots of tears!

See you at the opera.

Love, lust and political intrigue fill the world of the passionate singer Tosca. When her lover, Cavaradossi, is imprisoned by police chief Scarpia, Tosca takes matters into her own hands with dramatic consequences.

Set in 1950’s Italy, this New Zealand Opera production was universally praised during its 2015 seasons in Auckland and Wellington. The Dominion Post described it as “…a production that ticks all the boxes” while the NZ Herald declared, “…you will be spellbound…not to be missed”.

Christchurch now has its chance to see this acclaimed production, with Simon O’Neill and Orla Boylan reprising their roles as Mario Cavaradossi and Floria Tosca from the 2015 season. Taking on the role of one of opera’s most loved villains, Teddy Tahu Rhodes brings his formidable voice and presence to the brutal Baron Scarpia. Conducted by Italian maestro Marco Guidarini.

New Zealand Opera & Auckland Arts Festival present Candide.

Voltaire’s satirical tale of mindless optimism comes to life with Bernstein’s brilliant score. Sparkling with wit and humour, Candide is part opera, part musical and entirely irreverent, drawing on everything from European operetta to Latin American dance rhythms.

We follow our hero and his sweetheart, Cunégonde, as they journey through a mad and chaotic world populated by a seemingly endless cast of vicious, greedy, lustful and manipulative characters. Taking on an array of roles is a versatile and brilliant New Zealand and Australian cast led by the incomparable Reg Livermore in his New Zealand debut.

Auckland Town Hall will be refashioned into “The Best of All Possible Worlds” for this new production directed by New Zealand Opera’s General Director, Stuart Maunder and designed by Tony-award winner Roger Kirk. New Zealand Opera’s Director of Music Wyn Davies conducts.

Donizetti’s bel canto comedy, The Elixir of Love is as charming as it is funny. Nemorino is a likeable but hopeless romantic who has fallen in love with the bold and quick-witted Adina. She isn’t won over by his pleas of love and things get worse when she has an offer of marriage from the self-important Sergeant Belcore. When a dubious salesman, Dulcamara, rolls into town he offers Nemorino what seems like the perfect solution – The Elixir of Love.

Pene Pati – of Sol3 Mio fame – and Amina Edris, return to New Zealand from San Francisco Opera, bringing their natural charisma and warmth to the roles of Nemorino and Adina. As Dulcamara, Conal Coad showcases his outstanding comedic abilities and is joined by rising-star Morgan Pearse as Belcore. Wyn Davies returns to conduct this sentimental masterpiece.

Set in an Antipodean country town at the turn of the 20th century, Simon Phillip's production of The Elixir of Love beautifully captures this opera’s light-hearted humour.

New

Zealand Opera

A lost key and an accidental touch of cold hands in the dark; so begins one of the great romances of all opera. Puccini’s glorious masterpiece of youth, passionate love and heartbreak springs to life in this exciting new production by Jacqueline Coats.

La bohème features the return of some of the most brilliant young New Zealand singers on the international stage, including UK-based Thomas Atkins, Marlena Devoe, Julien Van Mellaerts and James Ioelu, along with Amelia Berry and Australian Nicholas Lester. Tobias Ringborg, who was last in New Zealand for Tosca in 2015, returns to conduct another of Puccini’s great operas.

Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, La bohème will remind you what it means to be alive and in love.

No battleground is as dangerous as the human heart.A brutal war, an imprisoned princess torn between love and duty, and the desperate actions of a jealous rival. Such is the territory of Aida: on one hand, the grandest of grand operas, on the other, the simple story of a love triangle.

Following on from the triumphant Opera in Concert performances of Manon Lescaut and Otello, APO Music Director Giordano Bellincampi once again shows his unparalleled genius at the helm of these Italian operatic masterpieces, leading the APO and a cast of the world’s fi nest singers through Verdi’s extraordinary score.
