ABOUT THE ANNUAL MEETING
Greetings!
On behalf of the Board of Directors and our many volunteers, it is my pleasure to welcome you to CACUBO’s 2018 Annual Meeting! We are excited to return to the Windy City and the Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile!
Since we last met at the 2017 Annual Meeting in Columbus OH, the winds of change continue to impact our industry, including tax reform that will affect all of our institutions and increasing public scrutiny on rising college costs and the value of higher education. As we manage our current realities, planning for the future is of critical importance.
This year’s theme is Next Year is Here! This tagline often associated with the Chicago Cubs also serves as an effective rallying cry for our work. In a rapidly changing environment, we must be well-prepared and well-connected. The 2018 Annual Meeting will provide the opportunity for you to consider and prepare for many of the timely topics in higher education, including cyber security, leading and managing our highly valued human capital, current updates on FASB and GASB, and many more. Just as important, the Annual Meeting will provide you a rich networking environment where you can connect with colleagues and learn about products and services available from our trusted business partners.
This year, we are pleased to open the Annual Meeting on Sunday morning with a certificate-earning session by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on Critical Incident Management. Sunday morning concurrent sessions will also feature an interactive program on “How to Engage a Talent-Based Culture”, and a presentation on the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act. Our first day of learning and connecting will conclude with an exciting Opening Reception at the 360 Chicago Observation Deck, located on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Center!
Please visit CACUBO.org to find the latest information on the 2018 Annual Meeting, including the full conference program and session information.
Next Year is Here!

GENERAL SESSION SPEAKERS
Arne Duncan Arne Duncan was the ninth U.S. Secretary of Education. Duncan served under President Barack Obama from January 20, 2009 through January 1, 2016. Duncan’s tenure as secretary was marked by a number of significant accomplishments on behalf of American students and teachers. He helped to secure congressional support for President Obama’s investments in education, including the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s $100 billion to fund 325,000 teaching jobs, increases in Pell grants, reform efforts such as Race to the Top and Investing in Innovation, and interventions in low-performing schools. Additionally, he helped secure an additional $10 billion
to avoid teacher layoffs; the elimination of student loan subsidies to banks; and a $500 million national competition for early learning programs. Under Duncan’s leadership at the Department, the Race to the Top program was given the incentives, guidance, and flexibility it needed to support reforms in states.

Session Description:Ironically, while interest in teaching as a career wanes, its potential for import and impact has become more crucial. In todays hyper-sensitized, information-sodden society, children surrounded by so much have never felt so bereft, so anxious. Rising suicide incidents, the perniciousness of cyberbullying, the maelstrom of political upheaval and the terror of school violence have hijacked the educational experience. Session Description:An effective CFO is critical to the financial viability and success of higher education institutions. Often, these financial stewards of the institution will stay in their roles for extended periods of time. This reality has many benefits including experience, deep institutional knowledge and well developed relationships with other institution leaders and board members. The flipside of these benefits is they may also present potential risks and challenges when a transition becomes necessary. The good news is, when managed effectively, these risks can be addressed and mitigated and the renewed perspective can present opportunities for business office growth and enhancement.

We discuss the advantages of a gradual rollout and test environment, and training for all user groups. Session Description:The Composite Score is an annual financial ratio computed by the U.S. Department of Education to measure the financial health of a not-for-profit or for-profit institution. It is not, however, a measure of the educational quality of an institution. The Composite Score is a combination of three ratios including the primary reserve, equity, and net income ratios. Each of these ratios is designed to measure a financial aspect of the institution. This course is designed to explain how these ratios are calculated and interpreted but more importantly to show ways institutions can improve their composite score.

Session Description:The process of annual financial reporting can be viewed as a repetitive requirement, void of fun and full of scrutiny from auditors, staff, and board members. Alternatively, it can be an opportunity to showcase the institution while delivering an effective message, all while meeting reporting requirements and avoiding reportable weaknesses. With new standards on the horizon and increasing demand for transparency, now is the time to evolve the relationship between auditor and finance staff at the institution. This session will discuss building efficient processes in creating and presenting financial reports, incorporating new standards, and highlighting key information.
