Overview of the S&T PlanOverview of the S&T Plan• S&T empowers NWS Strategic Plan and Service Plan –

S&T advances categorized as six “Priority Capabilities”

• Teams were structured around these capabilities and involved NOAA-wide collaboration

• The successful implementation of this plan will require Enterprise collaboration, and provide:– Resources for decision support services– Foundational data sets and guidance information– Business opportunities

Priority CapabilitiesPriority Capabilities

• Situational Awareness: An enhanced awareness and commonly shared view of the current (and forecast) environment and related hazards

• Numerical Guidance: State-of-the-science improvements in predictability and objective estimates of forecast confidence (uncertainty)

• Forecast Confidence: High-quality forecast confidence estimates from analyses and forecasts for customized risk assessment and decision making

A few targeted highlightsA few targeted highlights• A real-time mesoscale analysis: A state-of-the-science

very high resolution gridded analysis (~1km grid spacing at 15 min updates) of all environmental variables.

• Advances in numerical guidance: Advances ranging from storm-scale weather prediction models to far-reaching environmental earth system models.

• Fully calibrated forecast confidence information: Fully accessible and dynamic estimates of forecast confidence for multiple elements for short-to-medium forecast ranges
