Important Dates for Term 2 Important Information We have seen a few devices coming in this year with Windows 10S installed. In short, Windows 10S is a stripped down version of Windows 10. It is very restrictive and only allows software to be installed that comes directly from the Microsoft store. This prevents users from installing the free Microsoft Office Suite (provided by the DoE through the portal), Google Chrome, Adobe Creative Cloud etc. The below document is a guide that I made detailing the steps required to upgrade to Windows 10 Education edition. This can be done for free Stu Hasic (T4L Communications Manager) has looked over the document and given his approval. Feel free to use and distribute the document as required. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EB949L_rU8MuI6tLtJb9O6dMvEY9MYF7EGwCbknqrRY/edit?usp=sharing

Principal’s Report

Flexible Learning Hub It may have taken almost two years of planning, programming and budget submissions, however we now have a centre that caters for our students who are disengaged, frequently truant or need transitioning back from a suspension. The Flexible Learning Hub is located at the local TAFE and is currently overseen by the coordinator Alison Harland and TAFE manager Nicole Croaker. The centre kicked off on May 22 and Alison reports that it is being well received with positive results. The centre is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday from 10:30 - 12:30 and offers everything from support with assessments, school work, career advice and outside agency support. Special thanks goes to Stewart Vidler the Departments Network Specialist who facilitated the centres development. If you would like more information please contact the school. Agriculture For those fortunate enough to catch the WIN news on the evening of May 30 they would have tuned in to see Mrs Anne Earney, Felicity Baxter and Clayton Lanyerie talking about the Agriculture Plot and the great initiatives they have planned. I have always been a big supporter of Agriculture and the role it plays especially in rural schools. So to see another successful grant being awarded to Agriculture and the plans they have in place to improve the farm is welcome news and we await in anticipation as the area undergoes a much needed facelift. Parent/Teacher Evening There was a great turn out at the recent parent teacher night. These nights are important for everyone to give feedback and work collaboratively to ensure we are doing everything to support student learning outcomes. It was a very successful evening with many of the staff busy from 4 to well after 6pm. Congratulations to all those beginning teachers who held their first interviews. Also a big thank you to Mrs Kuhn for the great display of student work and Miss Rees for coordinating the evening. Athletics Carnival On Friday 25 May we held a very successful Athletics Carnival and what a great day we had. Well done to Miss Norton who did a fantastic job organising the carnival and all those who arrived early to set up on the very wet grass. The behaviour from the students was fantastic and the staff and parents were very involved and encouraged the students all day. Everyone should feel proud of their efforts. Congratulations to those students who broke long standing records, age champions, all competitors and those who will be representing the school in Dubbo at the regional carnival.

Film Stars It was a pleasure to watch many of our students star in a recent health video produced by Desert Pea Media over the school holidays. If you have not seen the clip be sure to have a look, the students in action are fantastic. https://www.facebook.com/desertpeamedia/videos/10155808528564121/ Mason’s Donation Recently I attended the Mason’s dinner representing the school. I would like to thank them for their kind donation of $100 towards the school. Every contribution counts in supporting the learning opportunities of our students. Uniform The school’s reputation is based very clearly on how our students present themselves in public. As generally happens at this time of year as the weather turns cooler, we have an influx of students who make the choice to wear non-uniform items of clothing to school. Can I remind parents, and students, that we are a ‘uniform’ school and as such require students to be in school uniform every day. While we understand that, there will be times when students are unable to be in uniform, this should be the exception rather than the rule. To keep a consistent approach with uniform and in particular jumpers we have provided a letter in this newsletter outlining which days students can wear their representative jumpers and/or non school jumpers like ASPIRE. If you have any concerns please contact the school. Screen Smart Parents There wouldn’t be a week that goes by when I have a parent or student contact me about bullying especially the bullying that we refer to as ‘cyberbullying’. The flow on effect in the school can be devastating as mixed messages or damaging comments are shared by a keyboard warrior only to have a child making threats to others, themselves, not attending school or contributing to mental health. We continue to support students and have very clear guidelines when dealing with any form of bullying and harassment. One strategy is to ensure we supply the latest information that support parents. There is a new interactive website available for parents of younger teens that is useful in helping parents establish boundaries for the use of screens in their homes. The link is:- https://www.esafety.gov.au/iparent or, if you google ‘iparent’ you should find this site by the Commonwealth Government’s E-safety Office. This site has information about the big issues that we, as teachers, and you, as parents are concerned about when it comes to teenager’s screen use. Here you can find advice about: • cyberbullying • on-line pornography • unwanted contact from strangers • nudes and sexting • on-line gaming • eating disorders • social networking • balancing time on-line • privacy (for now and in the future) There are worrying social and personal wellbeing trends with children of this age group as they are spending more and more time online and as their brains are in an important developmental stage, the results of too much screen time can be adverse. This site can assist parents to learn how to deal with any of the above issues if they find them infiltrating your home and their lives. The site suggests that healthy boundary setting by adults will assist in educating kids about how to have a positive relationship with their device.

Good-Bye from Pene Morcom

I began my journey at CHS in 2013, as a Beginner Teacher. Over the years Condobolin High School has given me my opportunities to develop my teaching skills, subject knowledge and overall personal growth. One of the best things working in a small school is the opportunity to become involved in numerous activities and programs that extend beyond the classroom into the community. This included running the cake stall business for Business Studies, Mock Trials at the Courthouse, Community Sport, Bingo Nights and Festivals. Activities week was always a highlight of my school year, giving students the opportunity to experience learning outside the curriculum they may not have otherwise had. It was always amazing to see finished sewing projects of students who had never touched a sewing machine or needle. Condobolin High has been a fantastic adventure. The unpredictability of student's curiosity has given me inspiration in my teaching methods; the students have taught me so much. I would like to thank the school community for their support and friendship over the years. Working with these dedicated teachers and students has been a great pleasure. One of my students gave me a parting gift with the quote "The only way to do great work is to love what you do." Condobolin High certainly helped me discover the work I love. It is certainly sad to say goodbye to this community and school, but my family and I are very excited about the new adventure awaiting us in Crookwell (as well as the snow!). Pene Morcom

Farewell Miss Sarah Kelly We would like to farewell Miss Sarah Kelly who has taken a PDHPE position at Forbes High School. Miss Kelly came to us as a beginning teacher and has taught in English, Visual Arts and PDHPE. Miss Kelly is currently Year 7 Advisor with Miss Wadsworth has coordinated our carnivals, has coached many of our teams, she runs the Homework Centre and the Girri Girri program. Miss Kelly has been a popular teacher and will be missed. We wish her all the best at Forbes High School. Miss Kelly's last day will be 14th June. Jeff Ward Principal

Speaking Loud and Clear

It has been an exciting fortnight for Condobolin High School students Maddison O’Bryan, Kiara Harris and Corey Herbert who have prepared for and participated in various Public Speaking events. On Tuesday 22 May, Corey and Kiara represented Condobolin High School at the CWA Public Speaking competition held at Trundle CWA. Fifty-seven students, from fifteen schools across our area, competed, and Corey received a Highly Commended for his speech on Speaking up. The following week, all three students travelled to participate in the 52nd Annual Festival of Speech at Lithgow High School. This was a High School competition which involved students speaking on a prepared topic as well as attempting an impromptu speech. All three students delivered well prepared, emotive speeches on their various topics. They also demonstrated their determination in ability in the impromptu section. The adjudicator indicated how impressed he was with the calibre of speaking specifically from our school. A huge congratulation to Kiara Harris who was the Junior Public Speaking Champion with her speech focussing on the topic of bullying and explaining the game of Twister in the impromptu. Maddison, Kiara and Corey all represented the school in Public Speaking with pride. Miss Alyse Cox English/HSIE Faculty

Bedgerabong Pig Show

School Ball

On Wednesday 16th May, 13 students travelled over to the Bedgerabong Pig Show day. The students learnt about how pigs are farmed. They also learnt how to parade and judge pigs. The students washed, dried and readied pigs for show using baby oil and talcum powder and ultra-sounded sows to see if they were pregnant. The students all had a fantastic day. Katrina Thomas

Student Representative Council Conference

In week 4 we travelled to Yass to attend the 2018 SRC conference at Warrambui on the Yass River. It was a 5 day excursion with students from 55 other schools across the state. We developed leadership skills and discussed a range of ideas to bring back and implement at Condobolin High School. As part of the conference we broke into smaller groups and got together to discuss issues facing our school. We were then able to get ideas from other schools about how to confront or deal with our own issues, as well as give suggestions to other schools in different contexts facing different issues. This year the SRC delegates as a whole felt it was necessary to focus on wellbeing as this was a major concern for all schools who attended. We agreed that the best way to achieve this if we worked together, to boost not only school morale and school spirit but assist students in their overall wellbeing. We learnt how to be strong leaders and also made new friends through the experience. “It was an amazing trip and I would love to go back next year, I have learnt how being a strong leader can affect my own and the lives of others” - Shaylee Saunders Shaylee Saunders & Maddison O’Bryan Student Representative Council members
