Weare very happy and pleased that we could allure such highprofile scientists for our meeting and we look very muchforward to their presentations. In this context, we would liketo especially highlight the featured lectures like the Roger-EckertLecture,theErnst-FloreyLectureandtheOtto-CreutzfeldtLecturewhichhavealreadyalongstandingtradition at the conference, and the 2nd Zlch-Lecture thatwas introduced last year to cover the field of translationalclinically oriented Neuroscience. However, the meeting would not be successful without theplethoraofcontributionsbyyoungresearchers, whichpresent and discuss their findings in front of their posters. We have received well over 950 poster submissions, manyof which are first-authored by young scientists. We thank allof them for their interest in the meeting and their invaluablecontributions. Since we have again such a large amount ofposter presentations we will have two poster sessions onThursday, Friday and Saturday each. In addition to that, wewillhavealsotwolecturesbeinggivenbytwoyoungneuroscientists who have been awarded one of the scientificpricesoftheGermanNeuroscienceSociety, theAgilentTechnologies price for excellent achievements in developingnoveltechniquesinneuroscience,andtheSchilling-Forschungspreis of the German Neuroscience Society, whichis donated by the Schilling Foundation. We would like to take this opportunity to deeply thank thesetwo institutions and all the other sponsors, especially thecompanies, which present their products in the hall for theirgeneroussupportofthemeeting.Withoutthemmanyamenities like the free buffets and the party night would nothave been possible! We also thank the University of Gttin-gen for providing the conference center for the meeting andin particular the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)which approved our grant application to support the meetingandallowedustoinvitemanyinternationallyrenownedscientists to this conference. Last but not least, we wouldlike to thank all the other volunteers who helped to organize5WELCOME ADDRESSthis conference in many ways and who make this conferenceenjoyable for all of us.Unfortunately,KerstinKrieglstein, whosuccessfullyorganized the last meetings of the German NeuroscienceSocietytogetherwithherteam,leftGttingenin2007.Therefore, it was necessary to establish a new organizationteam in Gttingen for this years conference.Inga Zerr andhercoworkersfromthePrionResearchGroupintheDepartment of Neurology in Gttingen took over this task.Their engagement and the help of the Berlin office, namelyAnnikaBuchheisterandMeinoGibson, allowedustocontinue the local tradition of this meeting. The contents of the meeting will again be provided on CD.In addition to that this program booklet is available. TheCD, which contains the abstracts is a supplement to Neuro-forum and thus citable. Furthermore, an itinerary planner isavailableonthemeetingwebsite(http://www.nwg-goettingen.de/2009/) which allows a creation of individualtimetables. Finally, wewouldliketoannouncethattherewillbenomeeting in Gttingen in 2010.All participants are asked tocontribute in this year to the FENS meeting will be held inAmsterdam from July 3 through 7, 2010, organized by theDutch Neurofederation. We hope that you will support thisconference as much as the last FENS Forum in Geneva, which was a great success also due to the many excellentcontributions from Germany.Hope to see you there and at the next German NeuroscienceSociety Meeting 2011 in Gttingen. Unfortunately, the datesfor this conference are not available yet since the Universityof Gttingen will change its teaching schedule from semestersto trimesters and the final schedule is not fixed so far. Depression and suicidal ideation are known to occur in increased frequency intheMSpopulationandinassociationwithinterferonuse.PatientstreatedwithBetaferonshould be advised to immediately report any symptoms of depression and/orsuicidal ideation to their prescribing physician. Patients exhibiting depression should bemonitored closely during therapy with Betaferonand treated appropriately. Complete blood and differential white bloodcell counts, platelet counts, and blood chemistries, including liver function tests (e.g. AST(SGOT), ALT (SGPT) and g-GT), are recommended prior to initiation and at regular intervalsfollowingintroductionofBetaferontherapy, andthenperiodicallythereafterintheabsence of clinical symptoms. As for other beta interferons, severe hepatic injury, includ-ing cases of hepatic failure, has been reported rarely in patients taking Betaferon. Themostseriouseventsoftenoccurredinpatientsexposedtootherdrugsorsubstancesknown to be associated with hepatotoxicity or in the presence of co-morbid medical con-ditions (e.g. metastasising malignant disease, severe infection and sepsis, alcohol abuse).Patientsshouldbemonitoredforsignsofhepaticinjury.WithdrawalofBetaferonshould be considered if the levels of serum transaminases significantly increase or if theyare associated with clinical symptoms such as jaundice. In the absence of clinical evidenceforliverdamageandafternormalisationofliverenzymesareintroductionoftherapycould be considered with appropriate follow-up of hepatic functions. Caution should beused and close monitoring considered when administering interferon b to patients withsevere renal failure. It should also be used with caution in patients who suffer from pre-existingcardiacdisorders.Patientswithpre-existingsignificantcardiacdisease,suchascongestive heart failure, coronary artery disease or arrhythmia, should be monitored forworseningoftheircardiaccondition, particularlyduringinitiationoftreatmentwithBetaferon. Rare cases of cardiomyopathy have been reported: If this occurs and a relation-ship to Betaferonis suspected, treatment should be discontinued. Serious hypersensitivityreactionsmayoccur.Ifreactionsaresevere,Betaferonshouldbediscontinuedandappropriate medical intervention instituted. The Schram Foundation isthe only private foundation supporting basic neuroscienceresearch in Germany. The aim of the present symposium isto provide a platform to present and discuss projects thathave been supported by the Schram Foundation. These coverimportantaspectsofneurondifferentiation, synapseformation and circuit function, summarized in the symposiumtitle From neuron to circuit. Following opening remarks byErwin Neher (Gttingen), Michael Wegner (Erlangen) willreport on the essential role of transcription factors of theSoxgenefamilyinthedevelopingnervoussystemanddelineate their function in neuronal and glial differentiation.ThepresentationbyHermannRohrer(Frankfurt/M)willprovide evidence that transcription factors that are essenti-alforneurotransmitterphenotypedifferentiationduringdevelopment are also required for the maintenance of thesefunctionsinmatureneurons.MichaelKiebler(Wien)addressesthemoleculareventsthatcauseanactivatedsynapse to be structurally and functionally rearranged. The-se alterations are considered to be molecular correlates oflearning and memory. Britta Qualmann (Jena) will providean insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying theformation, maturation and reorganisation of postsynapticnerve endings, as well as to shed light on the modulation oftheir function processes relevant for the formation andplasticity of neuronal networks. A novel signaling pathwayintheactivity-dependentmorphogenesisandstabilityofdendritesandspinesinvolvestheproteinJacob,whichinducessynapseremovalanddendriteretractionunderpathological conditions, will be described by Michael Kreutz(Magdeburg). In the presentation by Bernd Knll (Tbingen),theconsequencesofforebrain-specificconditionalinactivation of the transcription factor Srf will be covered.Srf controls gene expression of a wide range of target genes, includinggenesassociatedwithneuronalcytoskeletaldynamics. In patientsundergoing acute cerebral injury, subdural electrode stripsfor electrocorticography have made it possible to measurespreading depolarisations in the injured human brain. Aniniternational consortium, the Co-Operative Study on BrainInjury Depolarisations (COSBID) has now started to unravelthe role of spreading depolarisations in relation to clinicaloutcome, structural damage and neurobiological factorsincludingregionalcerebralbloodflowandneuronalmetabolism.Inviewoftheabundanceofthesedepolarisations in conditions such as traumatic brain injury, spontaneousintracerebralhaematoma, aneurysmalsubarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH), delayed ischaemic strokeafter aSAH and malignant ischaemic stroke and the observedcharacteristicchangesinelectrocorticographicpatternassociatedwithstructuraldamage, itisnowincreasinglyrecognised that spreading depolarisations represent a coremechanism of damage in the human brain similar to theirrole in the brain of animals. This is a question ofcentral interest in the study of brain function. To address it,theneuralnetworkofthevertebrateretinaprovidesanextraordinarymodelsystem.Itswell-establishedbasiccircuitry and good experimental accessibility together withprecisecontroloveritsinputsofferusauniquebasistostudy neural computation and population coding. Early on,this paved the road for paradigmatic discoveries in neuralprocessing, suchasthestructureofreceptivefieldsandmotion sensitivity, investigated by Hartline, Kuffler, Barlowand other pioneers in retina research. Today, the advent ofnew optical and electrical multi-neuron recording techniquesallow us to extend these approaches from single cells to thepopulation level and to study how different cell types in theretina contribute to particular computations. We are thusbeginning to understand which aspects of the populationactivity encode different stimulus features and how individu-alcircuitelementscontributetothisneuralcode.Thissymposium will discuss recent examples of using the newexperimentaltechniquestoinvestigatehowtheretinacomputes different components of the visual scene. To start,Thomas Euler will provide insights into the computationalpower of dendritic processing in the retina. Subsequently,Thomas Mnch and Michiel van Wyk will evaluate how retinalganglion cells integrate dendritic signals to represent rele-vant visual information. The single cell investigations aretaken to the population level in the talks of Michael BerryandJuttaKretzbergwhowillfocusontheencodingproperties of visual stimuli by populations of retinal ganglioncells. Finally, Matthias Bethges talk will shine light on theteleological aspect of neural computation in the retina.59SYMPOSIUM 2, THURSDAY, MARCH 26, 9:00 - 12:00SymposiaSymposiaSymposiaSymposiaSymposiaSymposium2 Symposium2 Symposium2 Symposium2 Symposium2Thrusday, Mach 26, 20099:00 12:00, Lecture Hall 105Chair: Tim Gollisch and Gnther Zeck, Martinsried9:00 I nt roduct i on I nt roduct i on I nt roduct i on I nt roduct i on I nt roduct i on9:05 Thomas Euler, HeidelbergTHE ROLE OF DENDRITIC PROCESSING INTHE RETINA (S2-1)9:30 Thomas A.
