The pre-sale show was judge by sale regular, Mark Hewitt, Cockerham. David and James Tomlinson of Bilsborrow Hall, won both the Halter Led Heifer and Non-Halter Led class with Lots 6 and 5 respectively. Lot 5, Bilsrow Tiergan Triuna, calved a month and giving 34 litres, this sweet Ballycairn Tiergan sired heifer and bred from 3 generations of VG & EX Cows, went on to receive the Champion Rosette and later sold to the judge for the day’s top price of £2380. Lot 6, Bilsrow Azure Lucie, a Cogent Azure sired heifer, again a month calved and giving 32 litres, later took the Reserve Champion rosette and realised £1750, selling to Messers Bargh of Penrith. Cows sold to a top of £1650 for a third calver from AR & J Whitlow, Pressall, with Arnot Carlina 181, classified VG88 SP and giving 45kg, she sold to Messers Collier of Goosnargh. Monthly Dairy Sale Monday 16th November Bilsrow Herd take Champion and Reserve in November Dairy Sale at Lancaster

The November Dairy Sale had an entry of 31 cows, heifers and bulls forward. The pre-sale show was judge by sale regular, Mark Hewitt, Cockerham.

David and James Tomlinson of Bilsborrow Hall, won both the Halter Led Heifer and Non-Halter Led class with Lots 6 and 5 respectively. Lot 5, Bilsrow Tiergan Triuna, calved a month and giving 34 litres, this sweet Ballycairn Tiergan sired heifer and bred from 3 generations of VG & EX Cows, went on to receive the Champion Rosette and later sold to the judge for the day’s top price of £2380.

Lot 6, Bilsrow Azure Lucie, a Cogent Azure sired heifer, again a month calved and giving 32 litres, later took the Reserve Champion rosette and realised £1750, selling to Messers Bargh of Penrith.

Cows sold to a top of £1650 for a third calver from AR & J Whitlow, Pressall, with Arnot Carlina 181, classified VG88 SP and giving 45kg, she sold to Messers Collier of Goosnargh. Cows averaged £1250 for all forward.

Buyers cautious of heifers lacking in milk and udder. The best heifers sold in advance of £1700, topping at £2380, with an overall sale aver-age of £1420.

Lancaster Sale Reports Friday 13th NovemberFriday 13th NovemberFriday 13th NovemberFriday 13th November A very satisfying trade for Store Cattle at Lancaster with vendors once again going away pleased with their trade with a 100% clearance rate. A better entry of cattle this week in terms of quality with more cattle carrying flesh forward and many groups of cattle being inside for a week or more now looking far better for it. The trade topped at £1,420 for a pair of Limousin steers from Barlow Bros of Croston with plenty of short keep cattle selling in excess of £1,200. Younger longer keep cattle where a better trade today with buyers around the ring now knowing how much space they have in their sheds and looking to fill up.

The Cast Cows and OTM Cattle sold to a better trade than what had been expected. An overall average of 107ppk for an entry of once again mainly dairy cows. Another good entry of 112 forward. Black and whites sold to a top of 124.5ppk from JB and JB Lawson of Bank End Farm with other good meated cows easily selling toward the 120ppk. The day’s trade was topped by a Simmental cow from DJ Sutcliffe of Throstle Nest Farm selling to 164.5ppk.

The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks had an entry of 60 forward. All types of beef calves eagerly bid for but the trade is slightly back from previous months with good British Blue bulls at 6 to 8 weeks old selling to £398 from F & E Harrison of Birks Farm with plenty of good beef calves selling between £280 and £350. Black and whites sold to £140 from David and Eileen Wallbank of Abbeystead. A small selection of stirks forward saw Angus steers sell to £550 from JA Salthouse & Son of Wilson House Farm.

Although a noticeable sharper trade than the previous week, it was not reflected in the overall market trade of 150ppk although a large proportion of heavy mule lambs forward. Lambs sold to a top of £82 from JA & R Geldard of Low Foulshaw for Beltex x. Mules sold to £66.50 from Andrew Butler with over 200 ules forward selling to an average of £63.50. Dalesbred lambs sold to £60 from BD Gill of Yarlsber.

The weekly sale of Calves and Stirks had an entry of 64 forward mainly consisting of black and whites. A better quality entry of black and whites forward sold to a strong trade with plenty of black and white buyers around the ring. They sold to a top of £150 MH & AR Robinson of Homescales with plenty of well grown black and whites selling in excess of £100 with smaller rearers selling £70 plus. A smaller entry of beef calves which were in very short of supply and all ex-cept one sold for over £300. A good run of calves from R & EA Gardner of Barrowfield saw Simmental bull at 6 weeks old sell to £440 and £430 and plenty of beef bull’s calves selling between £360 and £380. Beef heifer calves sold to £350 for a British Blue from HJ Robinson of Elm Tree Farm. Just a few stirks in the market today saw Shorthorn steers sell to £490 with Limousin heifers selling to £450.

An entry of half a dozen Dairy Cattle forward today saw a mixed entry forward. Freshly calved pedigree heifers from R & J Dodgson of Cracalt Farm sold to the day’s top price of £1,850. None pedigree heifers sold to £1,480 from Michael Carr of Clawthorpe. Second calved cows sold to £1,220 from JH Woof & Son of Underhelm.

A smaller entry of mainly medium to longer keep store lambs forward today which were also showing signs of the bad weather we have had over the past few days. Top price of £55 was paid for Suffolks from Ben Heaps. Overall average £42.32 for all sold.

NWA J36 saw an entry of 2,530 Prime Lambs forward at the weekly sale of prime sheep selling to a market average of 149p/kg and an SQQ average of 151p/kg. Well finished lambs generally achieving 155p/kg – 165p/kg depending on weight with the easiest sold being 42kg – 45kg. Mules forward in greater numbers averaging 141p/kg topping at 157p/kg. Hill lambs 135p/kg – 147p/kg dependant of breed and finish.

A top price of 197p/kg was achieved for a Beltex X lamb from GH Bell, Red Lodge Farm.

First cross lambs achieving £65 - £72 topping at £77.50 from JG & PH Thompson, Poppy Farm and S & M Cooper, Tarnside. Mules to £70.50 from Fishwick Bros with others generally £62 - £68 for Farm Assured Lambs 42kg – 45kg. Hill lambs sold to £77 for best pure Cheviots and Rough Fells £58.50. Light weight lambs continue to sell to keen interest with more needed each week to fill buyers demand. First cross Continental lambs sold to £56.50 (164p/kg) for Charollais x with Hill lambs reaching £50.50 for Herdwicks.

The weekly sale of Cast Ewes had an entry of 646 forward with majority of types selling to a continually strong trade, although there were less big Mule ewes forward this week and those that were forward sold to a slightly easier trade. The day’s trade was topped at £122 for a Texel tup from James Robinson of Kaker Mill. Continental ewes in strong demand with pure ewes regularly towards £100 topping at £106 from EJ & AM Fox of Biggar. A large quantity of Hill bred ewes saw better Swaledale ewes sell into the fifties and meated Swale ewes selling in the forties and leaner types easily selling in excess of £30.
