6:30-9:00 AM Registration - There is also pre-registration on Friday Night. 7:30-8:30 AM Breakfast is Served

8:00-9:00 AM Introduction to the NW Herb Fest & Teachers

9:00-10:30 AM 3 concurrent Classes • 1.5 hours each

Topical Application of Herbal Remedies - (B/I) EaglesongTopical applications are a vastly under utilized chapter of herbal remedies. This fun, messy and very useful practicum explores poultices, fomentations, compresses and other topical remedies easily made for a multitude of uses on people, livestock and pets.

The Urgent Care Herbalist (I/A) MyattWhen the going gets tough, the tough can’t always run to the ER for care. With a small but powerful collection of herbal remedies, an herbalist can deal with medical “urgencies” from heart attack and hemorrhage to food poisoning, diarrhea, abdominal pain (even when the cause is unknown), anxiety attacks and more. Learn how to be a “when times get tough” urgent care herbalist.

Herb Walk (B/I) Brounstein 10:30-11:00 AM 30 minute Break & Herbal Market Opens

11:00-12:30 AM 3 concurrent Classes • 1.5 hours each

Homeopathy for Herbalists (B/I) NagelAn introduction to how herbalists can learn how to use homeopathy & how to prescribe herbs homeopathically. We will also demonstrate how to make your own homeopathic remedies from herbs.

Culinary Herbalism (I/A) Khalsa Every healing system in the world uses herbs cooked into food to replenish energy, support immune function, fight a cold and hike sexual performance. In this engaging presentation, we will prepare energy tonics, immune recipes and sinus remedies, as we examine many healing culinary herbs. While we taste, we will discuss healing foods for individuals, combining therapeutic food and herbs and how to make medicine delicious every day.

1:30-3:00 PM 4 concurrent Classes • 1.5 hours each

Therapy for the Burned out Human (B/I) Cantin We humans were never designed for our sedentary, socially isolated, sleep-deprived, poorly nourished lifestyles. We often see “overfed but nutritionally depleted people” in the clinic. How does one rebuild the vital force, how long does it take, what are the signs and symptoms, what does the tongue and pulse possibly feel like? This class is very practical and will give the practitioner tools to work with.

Epigenetics & Herbal Medicine:Healing the past, present, and future (I/A) Drum The basic tenet of Epigenetics is: in response to immediate en-vironmental pressures, organisms can make adaptive structural and metabolic survival adjustments that are inheritable for their progeny, without detectable base-pair changes in chromosomal DNA. Carefully crafted herbal therapies may correct, enhance, or induce epigenetic inheritance in patients and their respective offspring. Epigenetic herbal healing might stop transmission of specific inherited disease susceptibilities.

Class includes remedies that have been used effectively for hot spots, ear mites, parasites, fleas, kidney and bladder infections, cuts and wounds, hairballs, bad breath hyperactivity, and more. You’ll learn how natural remedies have been used to bring relief to stubborn and otherwise costly pet health problems.

The Urgent Care Herbalist, Part II (I/A) Myatt In this “hands on” workshop, participants will learn how to treat everything from pneumonia and upper respiratory infections to lymphadenitis, external infections, poisonous bites (including brown recluse spider bites), moderate to severe intestinal distress

Garden Rant (B/I) EaglesongAn irreverent look at the down and dirty business of organic gardening or making sense of nonsense with soil amendments, compost tea, lazy beds, sheet composting, mulches, nutrient cycling…and more for everyday gardens and the lazy (time-challenged) gardener.

Wildcrafting Particular Medicinal Herbs - (I) DrumEffective herbal medicine begins with rigorous herb harvesting and processing. For nearly 40 years I have been continually appalled, disgusted, and ashamed by the poor, ugly quality of commercially available retail medicinal herbs. I cannot confidently send my patients to herb stores, food co-ops, health food stores, or so-called “natural foods” stores to purchase herbs intended for medicinal use. These usually compost quality herbs are the source of continual patient disappointment and accompanying treatment non-compliance. Herbs discussed include: Dandelion, Raspberry, Fennel Fruits, Hawthorn Berries, Willow Bark, Plantain Leaves, and Nettle Fruits.

Materia Medica of 13 Herbs for Women (I/A) BothwellWe will discuss and sample 13 of the most potent herbs to help women stay healthy and to heal, including Vitex, Black Cohosh, Stinging Nettle, Avena and Viola. The specific herbs activities and applications for optimal health and healing will be discussed. We will explore the plants through taste, touch, smell, feel and intellectual curiosity. Our exploration will bring us to a deeper knowing of the plant’s herbal wisdom and their specific applications for supporting women’s health. Intermediate level.

11:00-12:30 AM 3 concurrent Classes • 1.5 hours each Easing Anxiety & PTSD (B/I) Cantin Many people experience various shocks and mishaps in life which can put them over the edge. From personal and clinical experience, Candis will integrate the Ayurvedic and Chinese ideas for helping to ease the impact of these events on the ner-vous system and on the mind. What does anxiety feel like, what can you do if you feel an attack coming on, can medications help a person to ease them out of the sitation over time? What herbs, foods and practices help a person? These are some of the questions that will be explored.

Botanical Prevention & Adjuvant Treatment of Malignancy (I/A) Myatt - Solid tissue malignancy can be a “worthy adversary” in anyone’s treatment notebook, and conventional medicine is often ineffective for the most advanced cases of cancer. Hundreds (if not thousands) of herbs have been suggested for use in cancer prevention and treatment, but which ones really work the best? Come get a “refresher course” on the underlying mechanisms of cancer initiation and progression, and find out which herbs are the most important and powerful allies in treatment of this challenging disease. This talk will include dietary intervention using common foods and herbs.

Herb Walk (B/I) Nagel

medicine and choosing medicine for others. Specific formulas as well as simples will be shared. Topics covered will be preventative health with nourishing herbs, as well as formulas for specific complaints including pms, yeast infections, bladder infections, cramps, and the like.

An Herbal Protocol for the Treatment of Musculoskeletal & Nerve Pain (I/A) FrancisThis class will discuss herbs, homeopathic medicines, and nutritional therapies to alleviate inflammation, muscle spasm and/or loss of function after trauma as well as degenerative joint disease, herniated disc, sciatica, radicular pain from other spinal nerve impingement, and fixations in skeletal alignment that lead to pain, spasm and/or loss of function.

Menopause (B/I) - FrancesCultural misconceptions combine with endocrine stress and a toxic environment to create symptoms in menopause that are not necessarily seen in Indigenous cultures. The role of herbs in restoring and sustaining health during the menopausal transition is critical, particularly if the woman wants to avoid the use of exogenous hormone therapy. Discussion will include identification of organs and organ systems that are affected in menopause to determine which herbs are indicated to nourish and heal those systems.

Two Buds & a Leaf (I/A) DrumDetailed harvest, preparation, and therapeutic uses of poplar buds, grindelia buds, and fig leaves. Some herbs are best not used as teas. They contain non-water soluble resins and latex polymers. Best therapeutic results are obtained by rigorous harvest and processing techniques. Each of these herbs are abundant and currently underutilized by contemporary herbalists. Each has fascinating biological bases for their respective healing uses.

Dr. Dana Myatt will offer a 3 hour intensive class separate from the rest of the symposium. This intensive will take place on Sunday night. Description of Black Salve: Conventional treatment of malignant melanoma consists of a wide-margin surgical excision. “Black salve,” consisting of a variety of botanical substances, has been used successfully in the treatment of melanoma and other external and internal cancers. Though herbal formulas for black salve vary, all effective forms of black salve have cytotoxic, escharotic properties.

This presentation will focus on:1.) Diagnosis and treatment of malignant melanoma and variants.2.) Mechanisms of black salve therapy.3.) Treatment of melanoma with black salve: indications, cautions, correct application, follow-up treatment, adjuvant therapy, medico-legal implications.4.) Sources of black salve and comparison of effectiveness, including variations of “recipes” to try at home.

Why Black Salve may be preferable to the knife in treatment of malignant melanoma:1.) Black salve selectively destroys malignant tissue while leaving normal tissue intact. There is less overall tissue destruction.2.) Black salve “identifies” and removes all cancerous tissue including the “roots” of melanoma, unlike surgical excision where cancerous tissue margins may be missed.

This presentation is intended for health care practitioners although non-practitioners are welcome. CAUTION: slides of a graphic nature will be shown.
