The term determiner is used to describe the grammatical element that comes at

the beginning of a noun phrase.

NOUN PHRASE

(a) Determiner + Noun, For example: the apple

(b) Determiner + Modifier + Noun, For example: the biggest apple

Different parts of speech can operate as determiners:

1. Articles: Articles can be used as determiners. The article 'the' specifies a

particular person, place, or thing. The article 'the' as determiner increases

the exactness of the noun.

For example: (a) She is eating an apple.

(b) She is eating the apple.

2. Possessives: The Possessive Determiners such as my, our, his, her, your

etc. provide context in a sentence because it informs the reader what

belongs to the subject.

For example: (a) I like my hair.

(b) Is this your car?

3. Demonstratives: The Demonstrative Determiners such as this, that,

these, those etc. locate a noun in a specific location.

For example: (a) This cat is very fat.

(b) Do you want to eat these mangoes?

4. Quantifiers: Quantifiers such as some, any, many, much, a lot of, a little, a

few, no etc. suggest the approximate amount or number of a noun.

For example: (a) There are some apples in the basket.

(b) I have no money.
