How does Microsoft Licence Windows Desktops for Virtual EnvironmentsMicrosoft licences Windows for virtual desktops by access device

Virtual desktop access rights are a benefit of Windows Client Software Assurance. Customers who intend to use PCs covered by SA have access to their VDI desktops at no additional charge.

Customers who want to use devices that do not qualify for Windows Client SA, such as thin clients, will need to license those devices with Windows Virtual Desktop Access in order to access a Windows VDI desktop. Windows VDA is also applicable to 3rd party devices, such as contractor or employee-owned PCs.

How to LicenseAdd SA to Windows 8 Pro upgrade licenses purchased through Open or Select Plus

SA is included in Open Value, Enterprise Agreement, and Enrollment for Education Solutions

SA can be added to OEM license within 90 days of purchase through Open or Select Plus

Benefits are valid while SA coverage is active

* Eligibility for these benefits may vary depending on the Volume Licensing program and license quantity

Licencing programs for VDI

Page 26: Nviron event rerun april 2014 delegate version

Additional licensing requirements

A Remote Desktop Services CAL (RDS-CAL) is the license required for the Microsoft VDI infrastructure, irrespective of whether you deploy VMs or sessions.

By adding MDOP to the purchase, the customer can add application management capabilities to their VDI environment. And to add virtual machine management for VDI, System Centre Configuration Manager (SCCM) CML or as part of the CAL Suites .

For customers that have very simple VDI requirements, Microsoft has created the VDI Suite license bundle. It is a subscription-based license bundle that provides the following licenses:

• An RDS CAL that’s restricted to deploying VMs only (no session virtualization)

• A CML for Configuration Manager that’s restricted to Virtual Machine Manager only

The VDI Suite offers the following benefits:

• Simplified licensing with VDA or SA, the VDI Suite provides a simple way to license small-scale, simple VDI deployments.

• Excellent value the VDI Suite provides an in-box solution for low- complexity environments. It is significantly less expensive than competitive offerings.

Page 27: Nviron event rerun april 2014 delegate version

Don’t forget the application licences

IAM Cloud

“The guys at IAM Cloud were excellent. They were enthusiastic about their services and it showed in the level of service we received. They assisted us though a painful migration to Office 365, and at every point offered us suggestions and possible solutions to help remediate a situation where they were not the responsible party.”

IAM Cloud

• UK based• Very strong alignment with

Microsoft• 2 v-TSPs• Europe's largest Azure IaaS

Page 31: Nviron event rerun april 2014 delegate version

IAM Cloud

• Specialists in Azure based Identity and Access Management.• Federate 365, our flagship product, currently hosts • 2 million identities.• Services are hosted in Microsoft’s Azure DCs in Europe and the US

Page 32: Nviron event rerun april 2014 delegate version

What is Federate 365?

• Secure Identity and Access Platform

• Alternative to ADFS• Highly available - no single points of failure

• 100% hosted in Azure• ~2 million identities

Is this theCloud?

Page 33: Nviron event rerun april 2014 delegate version

Office 365 with ADFS:• Requires a complex multi-server deployment.• Significant management overhead and specialized knowledge required.• Leaves many single points of failure.• Does not have the ability to assign plans or activate accounts.• Requires Alumni (email for life) accounts to exist in the local active

directory.

Page 34: Nviron event rerun april 2014 delegate version

Office 365 with DirSync:• Requires an on premise server.• Does not allow authentication to other services such

as Moodle, Workday, Desire2Learn, Etc…• Does not have the ability to assign plans or activate

accounts.• Requires Alumni (email for life) accounts to exist in

the local active directory.

Workforces Are Mobilizing

• The transition to mobile devices is here– 47% of employees use smartphones instead

of desk phones for work calls, 69% use smartphones to access business apps (IDC)

• BYOD is a permanent trend– Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) improves

productivity, collaboration, and cost management

• Wi-Fi is the medium of choice– Wi-Fi meets enterprise UC multimedia and

campus mobility requirements better than Wired or cellular

– >40% of enterprise Ethernet ports are idle because many mobile devices lack an Ethernet port

Device Explosion

• The average knowledge worker has 2-3 devices.• Can you provide the speed and secure

connectivity they need?

Converged Devices

• UCC, Voice, Video, Facebook, Email, YouTube,
