Act IClara’s bedroomIt is Christmas Eve; Clara’s family is having a party and everyone is invited. All the family is excited, especially Clara and Freddie who are looking forward to seeing their friends and St Nicholas. Clara is particularly excited about seeing her best friend Charlotte whilst her mother and big sister Louise look on fondly. Outside people skate on the frozen Thames.

The PartyDr Drosselmeyer, a rather mysterious old family friend, arrives. With him is his nephew, fresh from Military School. The guests arrive, presents are starting to gather under the Christmas tree and the children’s excitement builds. Dr Drosselmeyer introduces a puppet theatre, in which puppets perform to the delight of the guests. Louise and her three admirers are inspired to dance by the puppets’ performance. Dr Drosselmeyer presents Clara with her Christmas present – a Nutcracker doll. Clara is thrilled and begins to dance with her new much-loved gift. Freddie grabs the doll so enthusiastically from Clara that he manages to break it. In despair, Clara turns to Dr Drosselmeyer for help. He, as if by magic, manages to put the doll back together again. Clara is delighted and forgives her brother. The guests depart, the children go up to bed and the house becomes eerily quiet.

The BattleClara has a nightmare in which her Nutcracker is attacked by the evil Mouse King. The clock strikes midnight. Giant rats and mice led by the Mouse King appear as the living room undergoes a transformation. The Nutcracker

becomes a dashing soldier and a battle between the two sides ensues. The Mouse King and his army are victorious and the Nutcracker is injured. Everything melts away to leave Clara and the Nutcracker alone as snow starts to fall.

The Land of SnowThe living room is magically turned into a winter wonderland filled with sparkling snowflakes. Clara dances with the Nutcracker who seems to transform into Drosselmeyer’s nephew. The Mouse King pursues Clara through the snow. Clara, the nephew and Dr Drosselmeyer escape in a balloon, flying across the glistening, frosty landscape with the Mouse King clinging onto the side.

Interval

Act IIThe Puppet TheatreThe balloon lands beside the puppet theatre. Dancers from all over the world representing China, Arabia, Russia and Spain come to life and leap out of the theatre. The Mouse King is finally vanquished by the heroic nephew and a magnificent celebration begins. The dancers perform divertissements. The puppet theatre disappears to reveal a beautiful garden, amongst which dancers perform the Waltz of the Flowers. Finally, Clara dances a glorious pas de deux as the Sugar Plum Fairy with the nephew as the Prince. They are joined by all the characters from around the world.

Suddenly Clara wakes up with a jolt back in her bedroom. Freddie and Clara run outside into the snow to wave a final goodbye to Dr Drosselmeyer and his nephew.

A word from Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director

Welcome to the London Coliseum and English National Ballet’s traditional Christmas production of Nutcracker.

This is one of the great pillars of the classical ballet repertoire. It tells the story of Clara enjoying her parents’ Christmas party with family and friends when the arrival of Dr Drosselmeyer and his gift of the Nutcracker Doll changes everything! Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous score, Wayne Eagling’s exuberant choreography and Peter Farmer’s beautiful designs deliver a Christmas story full of magic and wonder which continues to thrill audiences of all ages.

During these performances I would like to welcome the following international guest artists, Mathias Dingman from Birmingham Royal Ballet, Casey Herd from Dutch National Ballet and a welcome back to Vitor Luiz from San Francisco Ballet.

I know that for many here today this will be their first encounter with ballet and I hope that it will be the start of an enriching journey and a lasting friendship. After Nutcracker closes we will still be at the London Coliseum performing Swan Lake, for many the quintessential classical ballet, and I hope that we can tempt you back to join us then.

As Artistic Director of English National Ballet I want to keep the classics alive, relevant, and preserve our heritage for future generations. I also want to make sure that we invest in the classics of tomorrow by introducing brave news works. You will find us at Sadler’s Wells in 2015 with two exciting programmes of contemporary ballet. Details of the rest of next year’s season are found at the back of this programme or you can keep in touch via our website www.ballet.org.uk.

I would like to thank Arts Council England, Westminster City Council, our loyal sponsors and supporters as well as, of course, all of you in the audience for your support.

Nutcracker has been at the heart of English National Ballet’s repertoire since the Company was established in August 1950. Indeed Act II, designed by George Kirsta, was included in its inaugural performance. This second act ‘divertissement of sweets’ had already become popular in Britain but it was the full production by London Festival Ballet (as English National Ballet was originally called) in Europe and George Balanchine’s production for New York City Ballet in the USA which put the complete Nutcracker securely on the international map in the 1950s.

Wayne Eagling’s Nutcracker is the Company’s 10th production and with each eminent designers have placed the action in different societies from 19th century Germany and Tchaikovsky’s Russia to 1990s nouveau riche Britain. Visually, productions have ranged from Christmas card glitter to contemporary caricatures and, with the ballets three distinct locations, as well as transformation scenes, there is considerable opportunity for fresh interpretation.

The most renowned production of Nutcracker was choreographed by David Lichine in 1957 designed by Russian artist, Alexandre Benois. The young Benois had been disappointed by the first staging in St Petersburg in 1892. He thought the party scene set in “the salon of some rich parvenu banker… was stupid, coarse, heavy and dark [revealing an] absolute lack of taste.” He subsequently designed a whole line of Nutcrackers bringing a sense of magic to the original approach while retaining some of the traditional elements such as the white snowballs on the tutus and head-dresses of the snowflakes. For London Festival Ballet he created an ingenious setting for the Royal Festival Hall’s challenging stage, in which the scenic elements rotated. Benois’s designs had to be reworked by Norman McDowell (assisted by Philip Prowse and Peter Docherty) to enable the production to tour in Jack Carter’s popular 1965 staging.

A complete change came with Peter Docherty’s own set for Ronald Hynd’s

recreated his designs, originally created for Houston Ballet. This extremely pretty production returned the ballet to its original synopsis with a lightness of touch evidenced by the “flying cooks” in the Kingdom of the Sweets.

Five years later, in 1997, Derek Deane updated the ballet with striking designs by Sue Blane in which the dancers dressed in chic black outfits for the party set in an all-white Belgravia home and the sweets of Act II were immediately recognisable as Smarties and Liquorice Allsorts.

In 2002, Christopher Hampson’s unconventionally modern reworking of Nutcracker was designed by cartoonist Gerald Scarfe. The set included a viewing platform from boxes of chocolates looking to ice-cream mountains and the snowflakes and jack frosts jumped out of a freezer. Danced for eight years, this production featured Clara on the wings of Drosselmeyer’s paper bird passing through the clouds in the opening of Act II.

This current production was premiered in 2010. Peter Farmer’s designs conjure up the magic of a traditional snowy Christmas while simultaneously showing a darker vision of Nutcracker. The threatening presence of the Mouse King is felt right through the ballet, until finally good triumphs over evil.

1976 production which was based around the grandfather clock. This dominated the room in Act I and then opened up into the oriental set for the Kingdom of Sweets leaving the clock face as a window through which Clara and Drosselmeyer could watch the action.

David Walker’s charming designs for Peter Schaufuss in 1986 placed the action in Imperial Russia with the party set at the home of Tchaikovsky’s beloved sister, Sasha, and the composer appearing as the Drosselmeyer figure.

1992 saw a more traditional approach when Desmond Heeley adapted and

Facts and Figues

Some fascinating statistics from the Wardrobe Department

• Each Sugar Plum Fairy top skirt takes one day to make – there are nine Sugar Plum tutus made for the dancers taking the Principal role. The top skirt is just the final layer of the tutu, under which there are about 16 layers of net

• Over 3,000 metres of fabric were used for the costumes for Nutcracker

• Before every piece of fabric is used in a costume it has to be washed so that it will not shrink once the costumes are made. In one year the washing machine in the Wardrobe does 1,440 washes

• Each Flower man’s shirt takes 16 hours to make and each waistcoat takes 34 hours to make. There are 20 of these costumes in the entire production

• Each Sugar Plum Fairy costume requires over £2,000 worth of man hours and fabric. This does not include the cost of the Swarovski elements which were generously donated

• The value of the Swarovski elements used on the costumes is approximately £10,000 in total

• There are 400 Swarovski elements sewn onto each of the nine Sugar Plum Fairy costumes

• 400 costumes were made in total for the production. In addition, jewellery, shoes, tights and wigs were especially made for Nutcracker

• Each dancer has a minimum of two fittings per costume to ensure they are tailored correctly to their needs. That’s at least 800 fittings – each taking between 20 and 30 minutes

• The fabrics are from all over the world including German faux fur, American stretch faux fur, German lycra, brocade from India and France and English moleskin and braid for the soldiers

• There were 24 people working on the costumes; three wig makers; one head dressmaker; one milliner; two dyers/distressers (who make the new fabric look worn-in, for example the mice and rats cannot look pristine)

• The first costumes were made in April and May 2010 for photoshoots to promote the production

Tamara Rojo‘’As there is no tradition of Nutcracker in Spain, I didn’t get to see it until I arrived at Scottish Ballet as a guest artist. I was already 19 and suddenly had to dance it two weeks later! Sitting in the audience, I was surprised to see families bringing their children and grandchildren and I realised it was, for many, a tradition that was passed from generation to generation and also the first contact with the wonderful world of ballet. As a performer, I have always remembered this and tried to bring to Nutcracker all the magic of Christmas.”

Alina Cojocaru‘’I first danced Clara/Sugar Plum Fairy with Kiev Ballet Company when I was 18 even before I had the chance to experience the magic of Nutcracker on stage! I always enjoyed being Clara who ends up becoming a Princess and dancing the grand pas de deux with her Prince. I am very excited to now discover the magic of Wayne’s Nutcracker and also to have the opportunity to fly in a hot air balloon! I believe Nutcracker brings joy and encourages us to believe in dreams and magic.’’

Elena Glurdjidze‘’Whilst a pupil at the Vaganova Academy, St Petersburg each New Year all of us appeared on stage at the famous Mariinsky Theatre in Nutcracker. It was something we were encouraged to appear in each year and throughout my training I performed in so many different roles on that stage. It was truly wonderful dancing on such a huge stage where so many legendary ballerinas had danced. Since then I have appeared as Clara in many productions. When the clock strikes midnight and the magic begins it brings back so many memories. These performances mark my farewell to the Company where I have had great pleasure performing in all the leading roles since joining in 2002.’’

Fernanda Oliveira“My first experience with Nutcracker was when I moved to the U.K. as a student at

the Royal Ballet School. I had never seen this ballet before whilst in Brazil and for me it made it more magical and special with the Christmas atmosphere in London. The first time I danced the role of Clara/Sugar Plum was in Derek Deane’s Production. I think I enjoyed the role of Clara because she is telling the story throughout and her imagination takes her as far as becoming the Sugar Plum Fairy at the end.’’

Erina Takahashi‘’I will never forget the day I stood on stage as the Sugar Plum Fairy, every girls dream and it made it even bigger as it was the first principal role I had ever danced. But the memory started long before that, I was lucky enough to perform the Sugar Plum Fairy solo in Japan before coming to England, but the first time I danced the whole ballet with English National Ballet is a memory I will never forget. From curtain-up until the bows at the end. I remember every minute. It was my dream come true and I never thought I would ever get the chance to do it on such an amazing stage alongside such amazing dancers! I have danced Clara /Sugar Plum in so many performances over the years, sometimes changing Princes daily but every show is filled with excitement. For me Nutcracker is Christmas and Christmas wouldn’t be the same without it.’’

Begoña Cao“I first appeared in Nutcracker with English National Ballet whilst I was still at school in a version by Ben Stevenson. I appeared in both the party scene and in Act II – the whole experience I felt as such a young child was simply awe inspiring. Since joining the Company I have now appeared in three other versions, firstly Derek Deane’s, then Christopher Hampson’s and currently Wayne Eagling’s, each of them having a magic of their own. Christmas would never be the same for me without Nutcracker and whilst we are surrounded by the hustle and bustle of such busy lifes when Nutcracker returns each time it brings a calming and peaceful existence to the festive season. Dancing the grand pas de deux at the end, is thrilling and the response at the curtain call is something to cherish forever.’’

Laurretta Summerscales“I performed my very first Clara/Sugar Plum last year and it was simply amazing! The music is so powerful that you get swept up in the story. I have only danced Clara three times so the role is very new to me, I really try to think about the character and pass the magic of this ballet across, especially to the little girls as I remember what it was like for me to be inspired to dance. I love the Battle and snow scenes. It is so busy and very exciting, full of life and energy! The Mouse King is one of my favourite characters, and the grand pas de deux has the most satisfying feeling for me as

my dream was always to be the ballerina. I just hope I have given other people magic and dreams as someone gave these to me.’’

Shiori Kase‘’My first Nutcracker was when I was in Japan at my old ballet school. I got to dance Clara at the end of the year performance. I now find myself appearing as Clara/Sugar Plum in Wayne Eagling’s version and this marks my fourth year performing this role. Each time I appear in this part it feels like a different experience which makes it so exciting and refreshing. I especially love the snow scene at and of course the grand pas de deux in Act II. I find the snow scene very emotional and the music during the grand pas catches me completely! I am extremely excited to be performing this wonderful role once again.’’

Ksenia Ovsyanick ‘’This is going to be my first Clara in Nutcracker. I have danced this ballet many times dancing all the other parts, but I can’t begin to describe how excited I am to finally be Clara on this fairy tale journey and dancing to this magnificent music in the grand pas de deux. It is a wonderful festive ballet bringing lots of joy and magic to the audience and I’m really looking forward to bringing this across to them from the stage.’’

Katja Khaniukova‘’I first danced Clara when I was just 18 when I joined the National Opera of Ukraine – this was my first ever principal role – I still remember how excited I was! I have also danced Clara with the Ochi International Ballet in Nagoya, Japan. Nutcracker was also my final performance in Kiev earlier this year; it was unforgettable for many reasons because of all the historical changes challenging my country and what its people were fighting for. I never imagined I would someday move to London and be part of such an incredible Company and appear as Clara - all made possible by Tamara Rojo. This production of Nutcracker is absolutely stunning and so magical – I am living my fairy tale dream. I believe that good people always win in the end, this Christmas is a dream come true and I wish the same for you all.”Shiori Kase and

Swan Lake, Tchaikovsky’s first ballet, was not an initial success at its Moscow premiere in 1877. In fact it was so badly received at its opening that Tchaikovsky turned his back on ballet music for 13 years. But in 1890 he returned to dance and the outcome was Nutcracker in 1892. He had read Hoffmann’s original story and thought it was “an excellent tale”, and began composing the score for the ballet despite worries about the simplicity of the story and continuity between the acts.

In April 1891, Tchaikovsky was to fulfil a long-standing wish to go on a conducting tour of the United States. The first stage of the journey took him to Paris where his work on Nutcracker continued. He seems to have been strongly influenced by the charms of the city. In place of the majestic romanticism of Swan Lake he fell back on finely detailed work and a ballet of charm and daintiness began to emerge. In Paris, he became acquainted with a new instrument, the celesta, which produces a sound of ringing glass bells. Having also found a human emotional motivation for the character of the Sugar Plum Fairy in his much loved sister, Alexandra, the music began to fall into place. The celesta was introduced as the fairy’s instrument.

Tchaikovsky continued to work closely with Petipa and Ivanov (the ballet’s original choreographers) in the production preparations, gradually losing his initial reservations about the setting. Nutcracker debuted on 17 December 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre. Though the public embraced Nutcracker at its premiere in 1892, critical opinion was not kind. Some reactionary pundits considered Tchaikovsky to be a great composer who was unaccountably demeaning himself by stooping to write something so insignificant as ballet

music, while many of the ballet cognoscenti thought his music far too symphonic and branded it undanceable.

One critic’s comment was that “the music is a long way from what is necessary for ballet.” Whatever the views of his contemporaries however, audiences worldwide and that Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker remains one of the best-loved and most popular ballets ever created.

Reaching over 38,000 people per year, English National Ballet offers opportunities to participate, experience and be inspired by ballet through our nationwide engagement and learning programme.

An eventful 2014…It’s been a busy and exciting year for the Engagement department. As well as a full programme of schools workshops and theatre events, Dance for Health and Dance for Parkinson’s classes, we have been delighted to work with a variety of partners to deliver high quality performance projects. In February, to accompany the tour of Le Corsaire, we presented George Williamson’s choreography inspired by the production in the magnificent Manchester Town Hall building.

With funding from John Lyon’s Charity, we had rehearsals for Dance Journeys at Hammersmith Academy and Capital City Academy. The project culminated in a stunning and incredibly moving performance at the Barbican Theatre during the run of Lest We Forget in April.

The west London highlight of Big Dance 2014 was a special commission for choreographer Cameron McMillan. He worked with ENBYouthCo dancers to create a site-specific piece for performance at Westfield London in July. Also over the Summer we were delighted to work with students from Knole Academy. Choreographer Hubert Essakow created a piece for a performance at the school in Sevenoaks, inspired by Romeo & Juliet.

In September we were delighted to continue our collaboration with Music@Malling, focused this year on HK Gruber’s Frankenstein performed by Chamber Domaine. English National Ballet First Soloist, Fabian Reimair, choreographed a solo for Artist of the Company Daniele Silingardi, to perform alongside local school children for the festival’s schools’ concerts in West Malling and Ashford, Kent.

Engagement and Creative Learning

This October the Engagement team began working with Arts 4 Dementia, a charity who works in partnership with arts organisations to develop workshops that re-energise and inspire people living with dementia in the community. Weekly dance sessions, held at English National Ballet’s studios in Kensington, connected participants to Company repertoire and provide a creative outlet for artistic engagement with dance and music. The term focused on English National Ballet’s Nutcracker exploring themes and characters from the ballet to live musical accompaniment and concluded with a theatre visit for all participants and their carers to the London Coliseum to see the production.

Looking forward, 2015 is set to be another eventful year filled with exciting new partnerships, events and projects including the continuation of our highly successful creative learning project with young people, Dance Journeys. For more information on all the work the Engagement team have coming up, or have done, please visit the website ballet.org.uk/learning.

Artistic Director

Tamara Rojo

Tamara Rojo was appointed Artistic Director of English National Ballet in 2012. She combines this role with her dancing career, performing as Lead Principal with the Company.

Trained in Madrid at the Victor Ullate School. Galina Samsova asked her to join Scottish Ballet where she danced many principal roles.

She won a Gold Medal at the Paris International Dance Competition and a Special Jury Award unanimously given by a judging panel led by Natalia Makarova, Vladimir Vassiliev and Galina Samsova. Whilst at Scottish Ballet she danced the principal roles in Swan Lake, Cranko’s Romeo & Juliet and Bournonville´s La Sylphide.

Upon joining English National Ballet within six months was promoted to Principal. She danced the full range of the Company’s principal roles. Derek Deane created the roles of Juliet (Romeo & Juliet) and Clara (The Nutcracker) for her. Her performances as Clara broke all box office records at the London Coliseum and The Times named her “Dance Revelation of the Year.” She collaborated once again with Derek Deane for the creation of Strictly Gershwin at the Royal Albert Hall in 2008 and 2011 with English National Ballet. Tamara joined The Royal Ballet as a Principal at the invitation of Sir Anthony Dowell shortly after her highly acclaimed Guest Artist debut with the Company in Sir Peter Wright’s Giselle. During her 12 years she danced all the classics as well as works by MacMillan, Mats Ek, Forysthe, Kylián and Ashton.

Tamara has been repeatedly recognised for her artistic excellence. She won the 2010 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production with Goldberg: the Brandstrup-Rojo Project.

King Juan Carlos has decorated Tamara with Spain’s three highest Honours, The Prince of Asturias Award, the Gold Medal of Fine Arts and Encomienda de Número de Isabel la Católica.

She has also received the Benois de la Danse Award, The Times Dance Revelation of the Year, Critics’ Circle National Dance Award, Barclay’s Outstanding Achievement in Dance Award, Positano Dance Award, Leonide Massine Premio al Valore, the Italian Critic’s Award, and from the City of Madrid, both the International Medal of the Arts and the Interpretation Award.

She is on the Board of Arts Council East, Dance UK, the Anglo-Spanish Society, a Patron of the Ipswich-based DanceEast Academy and Adviser to Spain’s Superior Counsel of Artistic Studies.

Music Director: Gavin Sutherland Leader: Matthew Scrivener

Since Dame Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin founded what is now English National Ballet in 1950, the Company has always been committed to achieving the highest musical as well as dancing standards. From the very beginning, the English National Ballet Philharmonic has played an important part in creating the magic which is a vital part of every live performance.

The dancers and the musicians do not usually see each other until the dress rehearsal, instead rehearsing separately. However, the conductor will attend as many of the dancers’ rehearsals as possible so they know the tempi at which the ballet should be played. This is not an easy task – each Principal dancer will want his or her solo at a specific speed whilst every other divertissement must be at a consistent tempo so the other dancers know what to expect. The music also guides much of the drama of the productions, and the orchestra has

English National Ballet Philharmonic

a very keen theatrical sense which provides the perfect pace for any scene. They are accompanying silent soloists so they are reliant on the conductor’s beat to synchronise the different aspects of a production. As a result the musicianship and musicality of both dancers and orchestra are allowed to shine in every performance.

The English National Ballet Philharmonic is made up of many of the country’s top musicians, and boasts considerable experience in all forms of music-making. Recent notable events have included galas at both the London Coliseum and Royal Opera House, accompanying visiting ballet companies, appearances in concert (including the Bath and City of London Festivals) and, most recently, providing the music for the Royal Academy of Dance’s children’s ballet syllabus grades. They also play a significant part in the Engagement Department’s school visits and workshops, taking a taste of the music of ballet to tomorrow’s audience.

Gavin Sutherland delivered the best narrative ballet score of the 20th century with considerable aplomb, wringing out every scintilla of the extreme richness of emotion to heighten the drama throughout this outstanding performance’’Londondance.com

Howard J. Legge Second Bassoon and Contrabassoon I started learning the Bassoon aged 11 with Lynda Nealgrove at senior school and continued orchestra and chamber music studies at the Watford School of Music.

After GCSE’s and A levels, I went on to study for four years at the Royal Academy of Music learning Bassoon with Gwydion Brooke, where I was the first recipient of the Florence Woodbridge Competition for Bassoon playing. On leaving the Academy, I started Contrabassoon lessons with John Burness.

In 1984 I joined the English National Ballet Philharmonic, joining the orchestra Committee two years later and carried on to become the orchestra Steward and Health and Safety Adviser for the Musicians Union.

As well as playing Second Bassoon and Contrabassoon in the orchestra, I also have freelance work and teaching and coaching duties at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School in Elstree and the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra in London

Keep us on our toes

During our last season our dancers got through a staggering 2,860 pairs of pointe shoes – an annual bill of £143,000 for English National Ballet!

We hope watching our dancers perform and rehearse will inspire you to make a contribution to our Pointe Shoe Appeal. Whatever the size of your donation, it will make a really valuable difference and keep our dancers performing to audiences around the UK and beyond.

“Pointe shoes are not just a commodity, they are a necessity... my shoes mean trust and freedom. I can perform safe in the knowledge that my shoes fit me to perfection and will allow me to move in the way I want to. They are the tools of my trade and are always there for me”Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director and Lead Principal
