Health Inspection Results: Florida Nursing Home Guide versus CMS Nursing Home Compare

Both web sites contain helpful information about nursing homes and can be used together with other information (such as a visit to the nursing home and information from your health care provider) to make informed choices when seeking nursing home care. The primary differences between the Health Inspection Stars

on the two web sites are described below:

Florida Nursing Home Guide Federal Nursing Home Compare Star Rankings Stars are based upon violations identified

during an inspection. “Health Inspections” Stars based upon certain violations identified during an inspection, staffing information, and quality measure information.

Time Frame Last 30 months of violations for all recertification and complaints inspections

Last 3 recertification surveys (which occur every 6-15 months) Last 3 years of complaints

Violations Considered

All federal nursing home deficiencies: “F” tags - Health and Services and “K” tags - Fire/Life Safety Non-certified nursing homes (5): “N” tags - State Licensure “K” tags - Fire/Life Safety

Certain federal nursing home deficiencies: “F” tags - Health and Services (“K” tags - Fire/Life Safety are excluded)

Weight of Violations

Violations are given points based on severity and scope (see chart) Certain critical violations receive additional points, See attached state algorithm All inspections are equal weight

Health Inspections Stars are allocated based upon a comparison with other nursing homes in the state. Ranking across 100%: 5 Stars: Top 10% 4 to 2 Stars: Middle 70% spread among 2 to 4 stars in 23.33% segments 1 Stars: Bottom 20%
