PeriAnesthesia Nurse Awareness Week—February 6-12, 2017
Nurses working in preanesthesia and postanesthesia care, ambulatory surgery, and pain management are dedicated to caring for patients and their families. They are passionate about what they do as nurs-es. PeriAnesthesia Nurse Awareness Week (PANAW) is an opportunity to educate nursing colleagues and the community about the professionalism and passionate care that is delivered by perianesthesia nurses every day. http://www.aspan.org/Events/PANAW Augusta University PeriAnesthesia Department (PreAnesthesia Testing – PAT, Same Day Care 8 West, and Adult Post Anesthesia Care Unit – PACU) celebrated and recognized our colleagues during PANAW 2017 by hosting daily events, such as, ice cream social, pizza day, special luncheon and wearing matching blue Super Nurse t-shirts saying “I’m a Perianesthesia Nurse What’s Your Super Power!

Daisy Award Winner — Zachary Renew
Zachary Renew is a Staff Nurse in the MICU and one of his patients shared what great care that she received from
him.
Zachary, I will never forget you! You were the kindest and
most caring individual I have ever met since my confine-
ment in this medical facility. I have been convalescing in 5 different medical institutions since Dec 2015. I have had
several doctors, nurses, CNAs, and PCTs in these 8 months. I was able to go home but in February I was readmitted to
the hospital. Being confined like that and being critically ill as I was, it really took its toll on me. But Zach, you came
along and constantly reassured me that things were going to be okay. You constantly reminded me that I was a strong & determined young lady and along with my faith in God I
would make it through this journey. Your words of encour-agement rang in my mind and I convinced myself that I
was going to get through this trial. Zach, please know that you made a huge difference in how I looked at my condi-
tion & fought to get better. You gave me a positive attitude and I am well on my way to a full recovery. Thank you

Nursing Shared Governance
Nursing Education Council This month in the Education Council, AU Health Pharmacists presented an Insulin Proposal in which the pharmacy will pre-pare basal doses, like Lantus and NPH, indi-vidually for each patient. Regular and No-voLog insulin will be stored in the Accu-dose machine. It was also proposed to have one of each vial in the Accudose machine, for emergent situations and one time doses. The Education Council members had multi-ple concerns with this proposal, such as DKA patients coming off insulin drips, de-livery times, and patients in the ED being held until a bed becomes available. The Ed-ucation Council was also concerned with nursing workflow and time management. All of these concerns were noted by the pharmacy staff and the insulin proposal will be revised and further researched. Also in January, Michelle Sweat introduced the Progressive Mobility Initiative, which went live January 31st. Each unit should re-ceive a competency notebook to review and sign. Dr. Krista Larussa provided the council with multiple updates on new education available to the nurses at AU Health. Dr. La-russa has introduced a Novice Charge Nurse Class, along with an Advanced Charge Nurse Class and Preceptor Classes. All of these classes have been added to the calendar in the training portal. Steve Whitney and the Philips Team will implement guardian MEWS in February. Nursing Informatics Council In January, the NI council had Courtney Omary present on Nursing Documentation Optimization comparing our current docu-mentation to the model documentation. The goal is to decrease overall documenta-tion and scrolling. She plans to bring new topics to our meetings each month for the
council to vote on. On the same topic of documentation optimization, the council is working on the navigation bar order and renaming this month. Susan Gurley will present the workgroup’s findings and ideas to the council in the February meeting. Cynthia Pruitt spoke briefly about the Guardian Project, which is going to imple-ment vital signs wireless transmission to the electronic record with both adults and pediatrics. She announced the need to as-semble a project team for the Guardian Project and if anyone is interested, please email nursing informatics. Cheryl Spindler announced that a new downtime application named 724 Down-time will be placed on computers that have ordercomm in each unit. This project will be trialed first in the ED and the overall goal is to have the most recent clinical in-formation during downtime. More infor-mation on that to come. The council’s Downtime workgroup has de-veloped a “Ticket to Ride” which will re-place the pamper sheet. The Ticket to Ride will be presented to the Nurse Coordinating Council (NCC) for approval this month be-fore going live. More information on that to come. Clinical Ladder This month we reviewed the Shared Gov-ernance Restructuring following the town hall meetings and discussed the new Meet-ing Schedule as we will now meet on Wed mornings at 0800-1000. We discussed re-curring issues with our leadership tem-plates and are actively revising templates in question. We have composed an FMLA clause which is under review by the council and pending approval. We have also devel-oped a task force to recognize note worthy portfolios.

Exemplary Professional Practice Council The Professional Practice Committee is joining forces with the Performance Improvement Council under the new Shared Governance re-structuring and will be called the Exemplary Professional Practice Council. We have been discussing ideas to improve communication in each department and hospital wide. We are looking for suggestions or models to imple-ment an effective communication process. Email your unit representative with ideas!!! Our next meeting will be February 28th at 10:00am - 12:00pm. Special Projects With the new Shared Governance Restructur-ing the meeting times have been changed. If anyone is interested in representing your de-partment on this committee feel free to attend our next meeting on March 2, 2017 from 8:00 - 10:00am on the 3rd floor of MOB room BP-3306. The Special Projects Committee has some up-coming fundraisers and events this spring. Lula Roe fundraiser March 3, 2017 11:30am - 3:30pm Moretz Library on 4th floor Silent Cake Auction April 14, 2017 10:00am - 2:00pm Moretz Library on 4th floor Nursing Gala Saturday May 6, 2017 7:00pm - 11:30pm West Lake Country Club Dress will be evening attire. There will be food and drinks to include a cash bar. The band 7 Once is booked for the evening. There will also be corn-hole and a putting green for the people who want to play some games. Evidence Based Practice Council In the evidence based practice meeting in Janu-ary 12, 2017 the council revisited the idea of name badge role identifiers to discuss at the
next NNC for follow-up. The council continues to look at communication tools and models re-lated to dissemination of information both up and down the chain. We are not focusing on escalation of critical situations but tools that promote open and effective communication on a daily basis. Tools that can help both nurses and administration exchange thoughts and ide-as surrounding potential and actual initiatives in a way that demonstrates mutual respect. We hope to identify a process that has steps that work the same whether initiated at the top or the bottom of the ladder. New members in January included Gwendolyn Williams and Dipti Donald, and in February we will have Rebekah Troutman join us as well.

Frankly Florence
Florence Nightingale will be forever remem-
bered for her vision of nursing from a domes-
tic service to that of a profession. Her ideas of
advocacy, leadership, and nursing practice in
the 19th century is still an important part of
our everyday practice. Nightingale’s ideas of
advocacy for patients as well as the nursing
profession changed the face of nursing forev-
er. Her concepts and ideas have stood the
test of time in an every changing industry
that we know as health care today. Nightin-
gale not only fought to implement advocacy
for her patients but also for the profession of
nursing. We as nurses must take what she
started and continue to fan the flame. In an
every changing industry nurses function eve-
ryday as patient advocates. We strive to give
our patients and families the best care possi-
ble with every interaction. We need to re-
member that we must also be advocates of
our profession. In order to do this it is imper-
ative that we speak up and let our voices be
heard! Nightingale proved that advocacy
equals power to caring nurses. Use this pow-
er to help better your nursing practice. From
bedside nurses to nursing management we
must all be advocates for our profession to
make changes that will better our practice as
a whole. Better nursing practice will yield
better patient outcomes.
This section of our newsletter will be entitled

What are your questions, concerns, or ideas
about nursing practice at AU Health? What
can we do to improve our nursing practice?
We will be answering your questions month-
ly in our newsletter. Your feedback is crucial
to molding our nursing practice just as Flor-
ence Nightingale did in the 19th century.
