Using Sherpath will save you time by linking your course materials directly to your tasks. This tool
helps you understand and analyze the critical components needed to successfully complete each
course. As a whole, Sherpath bolsters your overall academic performance by individualizing your
academic needs based on your unique outcomes and performance.
How to use Sherpath:
Each week you will need to log in to your Evolve account on the Elsevier website. Sherpath
automatically aligns all the activities such as lessons, EAQ -Adaptive Quizzing, Case studies and
PowerPoint presentations for that week. Also, it is equally important to mention that each student has
the ability to further test their understanding by creating a custom exam on the specific chapters
reviewed. As you complete the custom quizzes and the quizzes provided by your faculty, it is very
important to reach at least the intermediate level in order to assure that you have attained the
appropriate knowledge needed from that week. The same process is repeated throughout the term
until the course is completed. All assignments, quizzes and case studies will contribute towards the
final grade of the course. For more information access the Sherpath manual, which can be found
under the Course Guide section to the left side of the Course Menu in Blackboard.

J.S. is a 50 year-old male client who is admitted to the emergency room. He
presents the following symptoms: lightheadedness, shortness of breath, and
overall weakness, and complains that his heart is racing. His wife explains to
the nurse that they were going for a walk, when J.S. indicated that he did not
feel well and that he was going to pass out. She added that J.S. sat on the
sidewalk and vomited.
In the emergency room, the nurse initiates the ordered intravenous (IV)
therapy and places J.S. on a heart monitor. An electrocardiogram (ECG) and
blood work are also ordered. The bedside monitor shows a paroxysmal
supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT). J.S.’s heart rate is 180 beats/min, and
his respiratory rate is 35 breaths/min. The nurse asks J.S. if these symptoms
have occurred previously, and he nods.
Questions

3. Students will participate in a Think-Write-Pair-Square-Share activity. The facilitator will
present the following situation to the class.
A client is on a proton pump inhibitor, but there is no history of gastric
disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), on his chart.
What is the rationale for this medication?
Each student will think about the question, jot down some ideas on paper, and share with
a partner. That original pair first shares with another pair to confirm or consolidate
information before completing the class share. The class will reach a group consensus,
and the facilitator will corroborate their conclusions.
NURS 203 PHARMACOLOGY 133
A whole class discussion will follow on the mechanisms of action, indications, cautions,
contraindications, drug interactions, adverse effects, dosages, and routes of
administration for the following classes of acid-controlling drugs:

tardive dyskinesia.
d. Students may refer to the notes taken before the workshop on Chapter 52 to
contribute information to said discussion.
e. As previously stated, students will hand in their flowcharts at the conclusion of
this activity for evaluation.
6. The facilitator will divide the class into partners or small groups. They will examine each of
the following case studies and respond to their respective questions. Then each group
will present their conclusions to the rest of the class, supporting their answers with evidence
and facts. A whole group question and answer session will follow. Note that the facilitator
may use these specific case studies, or others of his/her choice, which are closely related to
NURS 203 PHARMACOLOGY 135
the class topics covered in the Evolve Elsevier case studies in Sherpath.
The facilitator will use Appendix F: Participation Rubric, found in the Appendix Section of
the course in Blackboard, to evaluate this activity.
a. Case Study # 1:
A.F ., a 35-year-old female client, underwent a partial gastrectomy due to a large
gastric ulcer. She visits her physician today for a follow-up examination. A.F. is
recovering well, but she complains of significant tiredness and numbness of the
fingers, and states that her tongue looks different. The physician suspects
pernicious anemia and orders a complete blood cell count and a vitamin B12
serum level. A.F.'s B12 level is 88 pg/mL, and the complete blood cell count shows
that she is anemic. Vitamin B12 replacement is ordered.
i. What does the nurse suspect is the most likely cause of A. F.'s pernicious
anemia?
ii. What is the most likely route that will be used to administer A.F.'s vitamin
B12 replacement?
iii. What client teaching will the nurse provide regarding the adverse effects of
vitamin B12 replacement?
NURS 203 PHARMACOLOGY 136
b. Case Study # 2:
L.S ., a 60-year-old female client, is recovering from surgery for a small bowel
obstruction. She returns to her surgeon for a postoperative visit and the removal of
staples from the incision. The surgeon notes that the wound is healing; however, it is
slow in its progression. Therefore, the surgeon decides to remove only half of the
staples at this time. The surgeon questions L.S. about her dietary intake, and she
tells the physician that she really does not like protein. The surgeon indicates that
L.S. must increase her protein intake and suggests she begin drinking two bottles of
Ensure each day.
i. How will Ensure help promote the healing of her wound?
ii. What side effects of Ensure should be included in the client teaching for
L.S.?
7. The facilitator will assign one or more of the following situations, or others of his/her
choice, to the same partners or groups previously established, ensuring that an example of
each type of anemia (cytoplasmic maturation defect, nuclear maturation defect, or intrinsic
or extrinsic destruction) is included. Students will indicate the different drugs and dietary
interventions used to treat their assigned situation(s) and emphasize the client education that
is required. Students are encouraged to use visuals, such as drawings, illustrations and
graphic organizers, to present their information in a clear, accurate, and comprehensible
manner.
a. A. will be receiving iron dextran intramuscular injections, and he is about to
receive his first one.
b. J. has pernicious anemia resulting from long-term gastritis problems.
NURS 203 PHARMACOLOGY 137
c. F., age two, is brought to the emergency department for a possible overdose of
iron. His mother thinks he took her prenatal iron tablets because he thought they
were candy.
d. K. has been married for three years, and she indicates that she and her spouse are
ready to start a family. She asks you if she should be on any vitamins before she
conceives.
e. Y. is beginning the second trimester of her first pregnancy, and her doctor has
diagnosed megaloblastic anemia.
8. The facilitator will revisit some of the topics covered in activities before the workshop.
a. He/she will divide the class into five new subgroups and assign to each group one or
more of the following topics:
i. Substances secreted by the stomach and their functions, most important
types of cells of the gastric gland and their functions, three forms of
antacids, and other topics discussed in the written discussion forum;
ii. Nursing process care plan, uploaded as an assignment to the area in
Blackboard designated by the facilitator, for client diagnosed with IBS;
iii. Mechanisms of action, drug effects, indications, contraindications, adverse
effects, interactions, and dosages of determined vitamins and minerals
discussed in the comparative chart shared in the group Wiki;
iv. Anemia, medications used to treat anemia, and other related topics
discussed in the written reports uploaded to the course Blog;
v. Feeding tubes used in enteral nutrition discussed in the PowerPoint
presentations uploaded to the VoiceThread tool in Blackboard.
NURS 203 PHARMACOLOGY 138
b. Each subgroup will design five thought-provoking questions on the assigned
topic, which require in-depth analysis and scrutiny and not a mere yes or no
response.
c. These questions must reflect application of new knowledge and concepts,
relevance to real life situations encountered in the nursing profession, and may
even be applied to hypothetical situations and scenarios.
d. Students will write their questions on index cards, one question per index card,
and hand them in to the facilitator who will select those questions which truly
stimulate and encourage critical thinking and analysis on the most important
topics.
e. The facilitator will then distribute the cards at random to the class, ensuring
students do not receive questions designed by their group members.
f. While still seated within their groups, each student will attempt to answer the
question on the index card, providing a rationale for his/her response and
effectively applying the technical vocabulary of the discipline. If unable to
respond, the student will consult with his/her group members, reach a consensus
on the answer, and then share it with the rest of the class.
g. If a colleague disagrees with the given answer, he/she will provide the correct
response, providing an evidenced-based justification for his/her perspective.
h. The question and answer process will continue until the facilitator determines
doubts have been clarified and students have a clear and accurate comprehension of
these topics.
i. The facilitator will use Appendix F: Participation Rubric to evaluate this activity.
NURS 203 PHARMACOLOGY 139
9. The facilitator will answer questions and clarify doubts regarding assignments due before
the next workshop.
