  • THE CITY

    Welcome to Nuremberg!

Nurembergs wealth of sights, delights and highlights means theres always something for residents and visitorsof all ages to discover. One of these is theChristkindlesmarkt, the citys most famous event. Yearafter year, 2.5 million visitors visit one of the worlds mostbeautiful Christmas markets to experience its quaintatmosphere, taste the range of delicacies and listen to theChristmas Angels opening prologue. The famousBardentreen and Blaue Nacht events are well worth avisit too, as is Rock im Park, one of Germanys largest rockfestivals.

The Sigena Urkunde, a deed published in 1050 by Emperor Henry III, contains the rst documented referenceto Nuremberg. The Kaiserburg, which was designed as apolitical and military hub and was one of the key imperialpalaces of the Middle Ages, is still the citys mainlandmark. Nurembergs appointment as an Imperial Cityput it under direct control of the Emperor and it enjoyed anumber of privileges as a result. But the city also becameknown for its many scholars and artists, such as thepainter Albrecht Drer, one of the citys most famousresidents.

Nurembergs unusual anity with the crafts eventually made it one of the key trading towns in the Middle Ages. Inmore recent times, Nuremberg gained a less favourablereputation for itself during the National Socialist era. Eventoday, parts of the city are still home to gigantic ruinsrepresenting the Nazi regimes deluded notion of grandeur.

After the city was virtually razed to the ground in theSecond World War, the decision was made to startrebuilding the historical Old Town to reect its originalglory. Along with neighbouring towns Frth, Erlangen andSchwabach, the city today makes up the metropolitan areaof Nuremburg.

The citys rambling shopping streets, vast green spaces, art and culture attract visitors to the city the whole yearround.
