1 India Gate

Near Rajpath, Pragati Maidan, NewDelhi, Delhi 110001, India

If you’re flying to Delhi, you can probablyspot this architectural beauty,India Gate, through your flight’s window ona clear day, or when it is beautifully lit upduring evenings. The monumentcommemorates the 90,000 soldiers ofthe British Indian Army wholost their lives in World WarI and the Third Anglo-AfghanWar. Originally called All India WarMemorial, this is undoubtedly one of themost prominent landmarks in thecapital city. The structure is made of red andslightly pale sandstone and granite adding alevel of magnificence to the structure.

Originally as a part of the structure, astatue of George V, the then Emperor ofIndia stood under the now vacant canopy inthe front side of the monument, but it waslater moved to CoronationPark along with a number ofother British Raj era statues. AfterIndia's independence, India Gate became the site ofthe Indian Army's Tomb of theUnknown Soldier, known as AmarJawan Jyoti ("the flame of theimmortal soldier"). 

The area has a water-stream, an erstwhileboating spot, and sprawling green lawns,ideal for a stroll in the morning or evening. Itis also dotted abundantly with ice-creamvendors, hawkers and people who organisecamel and elephant rides, making it afavourite spot for Delhiites to go for picnics. India Gate is also renowned for the grandIndian Republic Day Parade, hosted hereevery year on 26 January. So, if you areplanning a trip to Delhi during that time,don't miss visiting this place. 

2 Swaminarayan AkshardhamTemple

Dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan, the Akshardham Temple in Delhi has been built following the

Vastu Sashtra and Pancharata Sashtra. The temple is symbolicof the Indian culture, architecture andspirituality. This is a pretty huge complexand will take up most of the day if you planto see it all. Below are the highlights of thetemple.

The Monument

The unique feature in the architectural planis the complete absence of steel. The templecontains 234 ornate pillars, 9 domesand  20,000 statues and sculptures.The walls of the main monument arecovered top to bottom with carvings ofdancers, deities, flora and fauna. One cansee a blend of various architectural stylesused across India

The Central Dome

A huge statue of Swaminarayan standsunder the central dome. The statue issurrounded by several other spiritual gurusof the sect as well as prominent Indiandeities. Each statue is made of anamalgamation of 5 elements ( Pancha dhatu).

This hall features a diorama portraying thelife events of Swaminarayan and hismessage about the importance of humility,kindness, devotion to God and servingothers.

The Theatre (Nilkanth Kalyan Yatra)

Here you can see a movie made of thepilgrimage of Nilkanth Varni, and 18thcentury child-yogi. This film was shot in 108Indian locations - from the icy peaks of theHimalayas to the jungles and shores ofSouth India.

The Boat RideA 12-minute boat ride takesyou on a spectacular journey of 10,000 yearsof the Indian heritage. From ancient Vedicvillages and bazaars to famous discoveriesand inventions by Indian sages andscientists, the entire boat ride is a beautifulexperience in its own. Musical Fountain(Yagnapurush Kund)A fascinating blend ofVedic Yagna Kund and a musical fountain,this stepwell features 108 miniature shrinesand 2,870 steps. The design in

the Akshardham Temple is in accordancewith the geometric calculations of theJayaakhya Samhita that is a testimony of theadvanced mathematical prowess of theVedic scholars, In the centre lies a lotusshaped kund (pond) which becomes the siteof the musical fountain show in theevenings. The show portrays the concept of'Circle of Life' Garden of India (BharatUpvan) The grounds surrounding the Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple is verywell laid with manicured lawns, trees andflowers interspersed with sculptures andbronze statues of freedom fighters, scholarsand eminent Indian personalities. 

Food Court (Premvati Ahargriha) This is a vegetarian food court which ismodelled after the famous Ajanta and ElloraCaves. 'Ayurvedic Bazaars' also forms part ofthe theme. A number of traditional Indiancuisines are available here.

To sum it up, the temple will take you into adifferent world altogether, with its intriguinghistorical paraphernalia, beauty andsimplicity.

3 Dilli Haat

Dilli Haat is a must visit place if you are on avacation in the capital. Under the open sky,numerous little kiosks sell jewellery,paintings, fabrics, saris, pottery, furniture,and of course, food from across the country.Only those craftsmen who are registeredwith D.C.Handicrafts are eligible to put uptheir stall. Some shops are permanent,however, some handicraft sellers areallotted stalls on a rotational basis atnominal payment for a period of 15Days.One sees a synthesis of crafts, cuisineand cultural activity here. You could get analtogether delightful experience buyinginimitable ethnic wares, savouring thedelicacies of different states which could bemomos from Sikkim, Bamboos hot chickenfrom Nagaland, Kahwa & Kebabs fromJammu, Pooranpoli from Maharastra or theGujrati Dhokla or by simply relaxing in theevening with the entire family.It is a popularattraction and shopping hub of the city. Thiscolourful urban haat-style market is a greatplace to pick up interesting baubles andsouvenirs and try out local delicacies fromdifferent parts of India.

4 Qutub Minar

Aurobindo Marg, Mehrauli, NewDelhi, Delhi 110030, India

Think Delhi and you're probably thinkingabout Mughal emperors. However, the pre-Mughal dynasties also left a mark on thescene of architecture and the Qutub Minarcomplex stands tall as an evidence of this. Itwas built by Qutub-ud-din Aibak andIltutmish. The most outstandingstructure here is a huge brick minaret, thetallest of its kind in the world. The visitorsare not allowed to climb the stairs inside theminaret, which lead right to the top of thestructure to a height of 73 m. At the base ofthe minar is the Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid.Another curiosity-inducing piece ofarchitecture here is the Iron Pillar. This 7mhigh pillar has withstood elements of natureover centuries and has an interesting legendbehind it.

Qutub Minar, made of red and buffsandstone was once the highest tower inIndia. The minaret was constructed with itsfirst storey initially built for the purpose ofgiving calls for prayer (azaan) by Qutub-ud-din Aibak. Thereafter, subsequent storeyswere added to the structure by hissuccessor and son-in-law, Iltutmish. All thestoreys are encircled by a balcony that issupported by stone brackets which aredecorated with a honeycomb design.

The entire monument contains numerousinscriptions in Arabic and Nagari. Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, which is the earliestmosque built by the Delhi Sultans, lies in thesame premises.  The premises also contain other buildings--Ala'i-Darwaza, Ala'i Minar and the tomb ofIltutmish--all of which are made of redsandstone and have numerous engravingson their walls. 

5 Red Fort

Built in the 16th century by the Mughalemperor Shah Jahan, theRed Fort in Delhi is one of the best places tovisit.The walls of the fort alone are about 2 kmlong, and surrounded by a deep forbiddingmoat, which in earlier times could only becrossed by a wooden draw-bridge.The Red Fort was built when Shah Jahantransferred his capital from Agra to Delhi.This grand structure in red stone is aUNESCO World Heritage Site in Delhi, fromwhere the prime minister addresses thenation every year on Independence Day (15August).

The fort is better planned than the AgraFort. The entire monument is enclosed by arubble stone wall. It has 14 gates in all, outof which the most important ones are-- Lahori, Mori, Ajmeri, Turkman, Delhiand Kashmir gates. Thestructure is in the form of an octagonwith long extended walls onthe east and west. There are two main gateson the west and south. The Red Fort isconstructed out of red sandstone along withmarble that has been extensively used inthe construction of the palaces within thefort. 

As one enters the monument from thewestern gateway, one can locate the NaqqarKhana. This is a small area whereceremonial music was played before theroyalty entered the Diwan-i- Am. The Diwan-i-Am used to be the Hall of Public Audience,were state administrative affairs werediscussed and concerns shared by thegeneral public with the king. Further aheadof the Diwan-i-Am, lies the Diwan-i-Khass,which is also known as the Hall of PrivateAudience. This is where the king had hisprivate soirées. These two important hallsare flanked by the Tasbih-Khana and theHammam on their sides. Visit this fort andget an insight into the historical heritage ofIndia.
